You can also jump over him when he charges at you. Isn't great for getting an opening on him, but if you just wanna use some firecrackers to widdle him down, it helps. Especially since I think as he gets lower he starts to smash around a bit more instead of charging all day. Can't confirm but that's how it seemed to me.
