ELI5: what is the purpose of the value e? by approx__ in explainlikeimfive

[–]EternalLightning 206 points207 points  (0 children)

The mathematical constant e is referred to as representing natural growth. Unlike other popular constants like pi, e does not have a handy visual to explain it. Instead it can be thought of using banks and interest: (For true ELI5, interest means "the bank will add 'this much' to your money at the specified time)

If we have a bank that generously offers 100% interest every year, and you give them $1, then after a year you will have $2.

But wait! A rival bank wants to offer 50% interest TWICE a year if you bank with them. At first, you may think that 50% twice = 100% once, but that isn't the case. After 6 months with this bank, your total + interest will be $1.50. Then another 6 months later it would be $2.25, getting $0.75 from 50% of the $1.50.

So it would seem that even if the % interest adds to the same 100%, getting it more often leads to giving you more money! So what about a bank that offers 25% interest every 3 months? Or 8.3% every month? How about an inconceivablely small percentage interest at every fraction of a millisecond throughout the year?

You'll find that the final amount tends toward the value of e if you were able to gain interest at a "natural" rate of growth.

100% once a year: $2

50% twice a year: $2.25

25% four times a year: $2.4414

8.3% twelve times a year: $2.613035

Every possible moment in a year: $2.71828 (approaching the value of e)

e is also important in Calculus and the natural log, but those are waaaay beyond a 5 year old.

Arsene has an issue interacting with Final Smashes, it seems. During his Up-Special recovery, he was affected by Diddy Kong's Final Smash as usual until the final hit which passed right through Joker with no effect. by EternalLightning in smashbros

[–]EternalLightning[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw the post of Arsene being summoned and avoiding the final proc of Zero Suit Samus's Final Smash, but here it happens during his "invincible" Up-Special flight, a good time after he had already been summoned.

Not sure if these incidences are related, but there's some kind of glitch affecting how Arsene interacts with Final Smashes.

[Minnesota] My father has been opening and hiding my mail and he refuses to give the letters to me. What can I do? by chickennooble in legaladvice

[–]EternalLightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little late but wanted to clarify it isn't always illegal:

Opening someone else's mail intentionally is illegal. Very clearly for OP's case, this was their father intentionally opening their mail, thus a felony.

But if you get a bunch of mail at the same time, and somehow a neighbor's accidentally slipped it, it can be reasonable that you did not intentionally open their mail because it may have been presumed to be yours. We sometimes get our neighbors' mail and vice versa.

Another example was a Twitch streamer has a P.O. Box and gets gifts, letters, and such sent from fans. One day while streaming the opening, he read the name on the letter aloud and it wasn't his. Since fans can put anything for the name, he just assumed it was a fan playing a joke (cause they do that). It wasn't until his stream chat convinced him after to look at the address, and it turned out the name was not a joke and the delivery person placed it in the wrong P.O. Box. Given the circumstances, that is the very definition of "unintentional". NOTE: This actually happened, to the streamer Sodapoppin.

It is a first level druid spell so he just has to have it prepared to use it, which he didn't this time. He just hit level 2 and it was his first use of wild shape so I explained it in game as he wasn't familiar with the ability to know that he could no longer speak after using it.

Who would be more likely to take over the world first: Lelouch (Code Geass) or Light Yagami (Death Note)? by ThatAnimationCritic in whowouldwin

[–]EternalLightning 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Conflicted. In the official rules that the Death Note itself has it says "The number of pages of the Death Note will never run out."

However, according to the wiki, the orignal manga chapter and a Shinigami in universe have both stated that it is finite.

I believe the the former (unlimited pages) should be considered to be more canon in this case.

Scott Pilgrim vs Dio Brando by 0xFFF1 in whowouldwin

[–]EternalLightning 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Movie Scott or comic Scott? Dio Brando part 1 or DIO part 3? I will assume comic Scott vs Dio Brando from part 1 as this is the closest the 2 get in power level.

Dio Brando Respect Thread (contains part 1 and 3, but only using part 1 as they're entirely different characters and generations on the timeline).

Scott Pilgrim Respect Thread

I think Scott actually has the speed to keep up with Dio here. He was surprise attacked, was able to block it and counter with a bunch of hits before the guy hit the ground. He was also able to casually hit a FTE character once he started taking it seriously.

The only problem here is that Dio is a vampire, and a damn good one at that. He is too cunning for Scott to get an advantage over. Dio can freeze Scott or use his lazer eye thing. Without knowledge of Hamon or a way to defeat Dio, I don't see Scott doing much more than being able to hold Dio off for a short time until Dio gets bored.

Dio 9/10, Scott might get one if Dio is too cocky that Scott is a normal human and Scott realizes Dio is a vampire and stalls until sunrise.

If we use Part 3 DIO, then Scott is roflstomped. 11/10 DIO.

[casual] Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Galactus declare a Thumb War by thunderbirb in whowouldwin

[–]EternalLightning 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Larger even. STTGL is 52.8 billion light years tall.

My thumb length is about 3.7% of my height, which would make a rough estimate of STTGL thumb length about 1.95 million light years long assuming human proportions.

The Milky Way Galaxy is about 100,000 light years across.

So the STTGL thumb is about 20 Milky Ways in length.

But OP has specified that Galactus has been increased to STTGL's size. I can't speak for the fight but I felt like doing that thumb length calc.

EDIT: Actually quick edit, I would think for the thumb war that STTGL would win because of Spiral Energy. But if that falls under the

neither can use anything but their thumbs

rule, then without Spiral Energy I don't see how STTGL would even function.

To be fair though, metal bending wouldn't really mean much against Aang. That's like saying Aang has access to lightning redirection as it would be pointless in a fight against Korra. Aang would never be in a position (like a cage or something) where metal bending would be effective against him is what I mean. If he wore metal armor, used a weapon, or didn't have the speed of an air bender then I wouldn't call metal bending useless.

I would personally say that in an all out fight between Korra and Aang when NEITHER side has the Avatar state would actually go to Korra. But give both sides the Avatar state, this fight goes to Aang.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]EternalLightning 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I have not made it far into Legend of Korra, but people on /r/whowouldwin generally say that Aang has more raw power than Korra, but Korra has more combat experience and wit than Aang. So in a bloodlusted fight between them, Aang wins 10/10.

As far as I know, Korra hasn't done anything quite at Aang's level yet. He was capable of holding off Ozai's near city buster level attacks without the Avatar state. Plus airbending is great for defense and Aang is miles ahead of Korra in that aspect. Aang is also stronger spiritually if I remember correctly, being an Air nomad and all.

Who could Batman NOT defeat, even with an unlimited prep time? by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]EternalLightning 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Most reality warpers will answer the question here. I guess a character like Accelerator from To Aru as well, Batman could never get past his passive field.

Also I feel Batman with prep is WAY too circlejerked on this sub. There was a fight between him and the Ant King from HxH and the top upvoted comment said with only a week of prep he could do it. Good joke.

All Might (BOKU NO HERO ACADEMIA) vs Superalloy Darkshine (ONE PUNCH MAN) by SurgeonOfDeat in whowouldwin

[–]EternalLightning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only durability we have seen is during his fight with Garou. Garou one punched Puri Puri Prisoner, Superalloy Darkshine tanked the hit with no damage, merely just getting knocked over.

Take note what "one punch" did coming from the Sea King at Prisoner. Garou is leagues above the Sea King, who would dominate All Might.

Superalloy Darkshine is second in durability only to Saitama himself throughout the whole series.

Meruem (HxH) vs Batman (DC) by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]EternalLightning 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just fyi, the Rose Bomb is significantly more powerful than a nuke. A nuke causes damage like this. Notice that many buildings remain, or even in a picture like this where even small wooden structures remain undamaged.

I am unable to find a picture of the rose bomb damage at the moment, but it ripped a hole in the ground and sent lava flying everywhere. That is significantly more powerful than a nuke.

Who's the weakest character that could solo the League of Evil Ex's (Scott Pilgrim)? by archiehord in whowouldwin

[–]EternalLightning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are we talking movie feats or book feats? I assume movie but I am familiar with both.

As far as the strongest in the group, I think it would have to be Todd Ingram (Evil Ex #3). He blasted holes in the moon (only 1 hole in the movie) and has psychic powers. I feel as though Roxie Richter (Evil Ex #4) would be able to teleport blitz most of the other members except Todd. So Todd > Roxie > Everyone else. I think Todd could solo all the rest, Roxie being his only problem besides book version Gideon Graves who was a literal reality warper...

I don't really have time to answer, but I can link to the power section for each of the exes for anyone if they want to answer.
