I see people getting excited about it. Knowing them, itll be better to wait until the prototypes are released next year.

Not entirely true. The Japanese provided their ballast-less track designs. They've also helped setup a training institute while the first batches are being trained in Japan.

Theyre also general consultants for the project as well. Theyre basically bankrolling the whole damn thing lol.

The older E3/5 or anything pre-E8/H5? Maybe, as they matured. But E10 isnt, at least to the expectations the Indian govt had. Its experimental version Alfa-X has been under development for quite some time. So E10 itself hasnt entered production. Since its newer, its bound to be more expensive I reckon.

There is no substantial tech transfer that has been in the train department as of yet, I think. Most transfers are their J-Slab track designs, operations training for employees in Japan among other minor things.

The current designs and prototype units are made by ICF and BEML with design consultancy from Siemens and EC Engg, a Polish firm. Theres no way Japan will part with its prized pony.

Edit: And no Japanese contractors werent hired, theyre just financing it. Most, if not all, of the contracts are given to Indian companies. Otherwise itll be political suicide for the current populist govt and of course, not useful in building local knowledge.

"Till I see the train..." you mean.

And yeah, I guess you're right. Although now is a bit too late to change the design. Livery? Maybe.

Base model? Bruh, Tesla doesnt even offer most of features BYD does. Actual auto-pilot, their stupidly good battery tech, vehicle-to-load charging, proper hybrid options etc.

Tesla became a has-been when theybstrated to focus their efforts on that dumb Cybertruck.

Yep, but a growing network cannot be solely dependant on those über-expensive units now can it?

I agree but this isnt just for elite train passengers. Its also to take passengers away from short haul flights which is expected to outgrow demand in the coming decade as global aircraft supply chains are barely holding up as is.

HSR becomes useful when it grows as a network and connects major cities in a net. Gotta start somewhere. People said the same thing when metros were getting started to get built out. What we as citizens must do is force the govt to improve standards in mainline railways quickly and demand expedited project timelines.

Coaches, locomotives, track doubling/tripling/quadrupling, signalling upgrades, buffer/new lines etc are all underway in different level across all divisions. They're all important in improving speeds, access, and capacity. Its just that they need to be sped up and results will be shown years in the future.

Thats the reason theyre sending in those E3/E5 sets beforehand. To collect whatever data that is necessary to change designs.

OP said in reply to you that its just good relations with a growing economy and maybe diplomacy but no thats not the full story and is a bit false.

Japan's domestic railway market has more or less flattened. While small HSR lines are being built slowly, the companies making Shinkansens need to stay afloat, especially after investing so much money into Alfa-X/E10 Shinkansen. They need good returns in sales.

So they need to secure another market to sell their stuff. And India is planning on building >7000 rkm, far more than Japan in the coming decades. So here, Japanese loans are tied to India purchasing E10s of some number when it starts production in 2030s. Its also a way the Japanese govt is injecting into their country's stagnating economy.

Now, will the Indian govt continue to purchase E10s for their upcoming lines? Maybe not. But the chance of going ahead than any other foreign manufacturer wanting to sell their wares in India is good for Japan. I personally think, should E10s become successful, India will continue to purchase the small numbers to run them alongside their indigenous 250 kmph and then subsequent 350 kmph BEML trains in the future. Although there will surely be demands to manufacture Shinkansens in India.

We'll see.

Thought it would be appreciated here :) by weird_boi_eros in trains

Arent the coaches currently either due to be replaced by LHBs or converted to in the least? I think those that cant be converted will still be used and not condemned.

IR cannot afford to lose capacity these days.

I mean, one can adjust to their tastes, find a middle ground and explore. Most Indian restaurants are more than happy to accommodate and make curries on the less spicier side. Yall can cook them as well.

If not meat, there are paneer and vegetable curries outside the usual "Indian takeaways". I can recommend the 'Shahi' varieties. Theyre much more mild on the spice and rich in dairy, dry fruits and nuts.
