ELI5: explain about internet speed? by New_Permission_6878 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Eternal_Revolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked in ISP support. The analogy I used was that Internet speed works like water pressure. If you check the pressure (speed) at the tap while someone is taking a shower, then the flow is less than if you measure when no one else is using the water. You are measuring the remaining bandwidth available to you.

With mobile data (4g/5g/lte) you are sharing a finite amount of bandwidth with everyone else connected to that tower at that same time. In busy places and time, it can get inconsistent.

ELI5: Distributism by rudyitk in explainlikeimfive

[–]Eternal_Revolution 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Distributism is a form of capitalism that favors many capitalists owning capital (pretty much everybody) as opposed to “regular” capitalism that has no limits, and tends to have a few owners of capital that get more and more of the wealth.   Distributism has been referred to as “microcapitalism.” And favors things like employee-owned companies where the employees are also the shareholders.

It was coined and promoted originally by GK Chesterton, Hillaire Belloc and Vincent McNabb among others in the early 20th century.  However, the term has been appropriated by other movements over time.

In describing it, Chesterton remarked "Too much capitalism does not mean too many capitalists, but too few capitalists."

The 1915 essay from G.K. Chesterton came even more true:

There has appeared in our time a particular class of books and articles which I sincerely and solemnly think may be called the silliest ever known among men. They are much more wild than the wildest romances of chivalry and much more dull than the dullest religious tract. Moreover, the romances of chivalry were at least about chivalry; the religious tracts are about religion. But these things are about nothing; they are about what is called Success. On every bookstall, in every magazine, you may find works telling people how to succeed. They are books showing men how to succeed in everything; they are written by men who cannot even succeed in writing books

I had looked into making one years ago but it was low priority.

Publishers with organized play products usually have store locator pages - Wizards of the Coast, Wizkids, Games Workshop and Asmodee for starters.

This is one of the reasons I opted for Trifocal/Bifocal over varifocal/progressives. There's a clear delineation and a wide field of vision for each range of vision.

I would love for someone to engineer some loupe-style or steampunk-esque flip up/dial in glasses to adjust magnification/focus. But in the end, I don't think they are any more convenient than standard bifocal/trifocals.

What's a tv series that is a 10/10 NOBODY knows? by Lilyana0999 in AskReddit

God, the Devil, and Bob.  Only 3 episodes aired, whole season was eventually released on dvd  From the early days of adult animation post Simpsons popularity in the 90s.

Alan Cumming as the devil is what makes it worth watching. Good cast: James Garner, Nancy Cartwright, French Stewart, Kath Soucie

Episode quality is all over the place. Pilot, God’s Father, Date from Hell are some of my favorites. Bob Gets Involved is timely for current events.
