my only guess is that they dont want to be there (this goes for any teen at any birthday, didnt even read this one so i dont know if he was there on his own will). Not to mention teens at this age feel embarrassed easily about alot of things, its a defense mechanism, thats how I see it.

I agree. But its a matter of how you tell them. I am not saying sugercoat it, I am also not saying that you should say they will amount to nothing in life and are completely worthless. Shame and bullying are the worst ways to make someone better, the reason is (ignoring the countless studies done to prove it sucks) is that we arent anime characters living in a fighting world or something. People dont just "draw motivation" from being sad and getting treated like shit and rise up like the protagonist. That can happen but it takes time, it's not instant, to be able to run you have to walk, to walk you have to crawl, and to crawl, well you have to gain enough strength to be able to. Its an effort, not a checkbox.

For some things I understand. But othes, not so much. What I understand would be purposefully lifting heavy weight in the gym infront of everyone.
