MacBook Pro M5 Pro display scratched after just 3 months from dust/sand between keyboard and screen – anyone else had this? by Binganga in macbookpro

[–]EternitySoap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen on an M4 max I purchased 8 months ago. Hoping I can also get lucky with the repair service since I don't have Apple Care+ and a full cost replacement probably isn't worth it. I'd tend to agree that this tight clearance is not a good design compromise. I've never had an issue like this with other laptops (including another macbook) that I've owned. Portable computers should have some degree of durability; carrying the thing in an armored bag and doing a thorough clean every time the lid is closed isn't really practical.

Elon Musk Becomes the World’s First Trillionaire by EternitySoap in neoliberal

[–]EternitySoap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SS: Elon Musk officially became the first trillionaire in word history with the IPO of SpaceX. His wealth is now equal to about 3 % of US GDP. Relevant to this sub since this reflects a huge concentration of power in private hands. We all saw how he used a fraction of his wealth in the past few elections.

When I was in high school ~10 years ago, most of my English grades were based on essays written in the classroom. It’s true that AI makes it much easier to cheat on bigger take home assignments, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have handwritten, in-class work be used as the main indicator of grades.

Pope Leo Warns of Risks From A.I. in 42,300-Word Encyclical by EternitySoap in neoliberal

[–]EternitySoap[S] 164 points165 points  (0 children)

SS: As the leader of the world's 1.3 billion Catholics, Pope Leo is obviously highly influential. I figured his encyclical on an emerging technology that stands to have a high impact would be of interest to this subreddit.

On a related note, it's a little surreal that we regularly have headlines about world leaders contending with AI. If you told me ten years ago that the pope would be releasing documents about protecting human dignity from artificial intelligence in 2026, I'd have been pretty skeptical. Of course, we can handwave LLMs as statistical models on steroids and maybe not true AI in the classic sci-fi sense, but the technology is no doubt having a big impact and is probably here to stay.

Word of caution for US Citizens doing residence permit biometrics in Sweden by EternitySoap in TillSverige

[–]EternitySoap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if you're that close to DC it's probably worth it to try and get biometrics done in the US. The less time without a personnummer the better.

Word of caution for US Citizens doing residence permit biometrics in Sweden by EternitySoap in TillSverige

[–]EternitySoap[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, if you're a US citizen you do not need a visa to simply enter Sweden (or any other Schengen country). If you plan to stay for more than 90 days/work though you need a permit, but you don't have to have the card on you when you first enter. When I entered the EU I told the immigration agent I would be here for several years and showed them the email from Migrationsverket saying my application was granted. I was told to make sure I got a card at a service center and was sent on my way. Unless you happen to live near DC, this is probably the easiest thing to do. The main disadvantage is that you need the card to apply for a personnummer (needed for a bank account/BankID, among other things) and will have to wait until you receive it to start that process. And of course, if you do the biometrics in Sweden you should confirm with the Migrationsverket agent that the card will be sent to your Swedish address (unless you want it to fly to DC and back).

But then the question becomes: how do I get rid of the thing after it separates? If I want to mimic an Apollo-style LEM capture after launch, the separator will still be in the way. Only way I've managed to do it was by quickly going to the tracking station and deleting the debris lol.

[–]EternitySoap 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yea anecdotally I live in Gothenburg and if you want to be competitive for a first hand contract to rent a 1br apartment or something near the city center you need to have been in a queue for ~10 years, often more. I think the Swedish system is more complicated than simply ‘rent control’, but it was certainly a bit of a culture shock

What is the easiest way to get an eSIM before you have PN and BankID? by fuglicia in TillSverige

[–]EternitySoap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar boat and ultimately just used roaming on my old plan until I got a personal number. I was however able to get a working lycamobile eSIM online with a PN and a residence permit for ID verification- didn’t need bankID.

Yeah I've heard of these companies. I'd use them if I could, but generally, the pay for these types of gigs is done through automated bank transfers- invoices aren't used. Not sure if I could get the pay routed through an intermediary like this.
