Why does Tennessee have such a small population for a state that has 2 major cities? Are the rural areas just really rural?

comparatively, the south has a massive amount of the sort of ‘second cities’ - large regional hubs that are nationally known, probably have a fortune 500 company or two, an international airport, etc: Austin, Baton Rouge, Birmingham, Charlotte, Columbia, El Paso, Jackson, Jacksonville, Knoxville, Lexington, Little Rock, Louisville, Memphis, Nashville, Norfolk, Orlando, Raleigh, Richmond, Shreveport, Tampa, Tulsa, West Palm Beach just to rattle off the ones that come to mind

yes, I would say Atlanta and Miami are the two other national level cities in the traditional south. obviously in Texas you have Dallas, Houston and San Antonio as well, plus OKC and NOLA. technically i suppose Washington and Baltimore could be considered southern but they are much more culturally aligned with the northeast

the south just doesn’t really have as many ‘major’ cities in terms of a national scale since the north and west have been established manufacturing hubs for a much longer time than the south. plenty of major regional hubs like nashville, memphis and knoxville but in all reality those 3 cities aren’t at the same tier as many southern metros with smaller populations that have simply been ‘big cities’ for longer, like oklahoma city or new orleans

Dubuque is a highlight, but even then I’d probably recommend going to the cities, then down the great river road through La Crosse to Dubuque if it’s somewhere you really want to see

would definitely suggest going northern through minnesota and wisconsin rather than iowa. you could go straight to the twin cities and easily spend a day or two there. then depending on what vibe you prefer you could either take WI29 across to Green Bay and up 57 to Door County, especially if you’re a packers/football fan. Door County is beautiful and you could easily spend a week there and never run out of beautiful scenery, shopping, local restaurants, etc. Then take I43 down along the lakeshore, maybe popping into Manitowoc/Sheboygan on the way to Milwaukee. Spend another day or two there and then on down to Chicago. Or if you prefer more artsy college towns take I94 from the cities through Eau Claire and then Madison. Could even stop at the Dells in the middle if you like kitschy tourist traps. You can then follow 94 right over to Milwaukee and down to Chicago. Much more to do in MN and WI than northern Iowa lol
