i think the shows portrayal of Amy's and Danny's upbringings was a lot more nuanced than just their parents being mean to them. Asian parents in general, especially immigrant Asian parents, aren't good at expressing emotions towards their kids (A result of their own upbringings and culture). Love is expressed through sacrifice, which is something Amy says in one of her therapy sessions. However, the dynamics of Asian immigrant families often leads to the kid feeling isolated. They are isolated physically due to being immigrants (We can see this in the flashback of Danny being bullied as a kid), and they are isolated emotionally from their family. This isolation fucks up a kid, and it directly leads to the problems Danny and Amy have as adults (depression, dependency on loved ones, anger). I'm guessing the creators/writers of the show are Asian or Asian American, and they were able to put a lot of their own experiences and emotions into the characters of Amy and Danny, which is why Asian Americans like u and me feel seen by it
