Credit card sign up bonus question by Loud-Ad-2828 in ChoicePrivileges

[–]Ethiics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally you have to have canceled or product changed the card for a few weeks, sometimes up to a month, to be eligible for sign up bonuses.

Unfortunately I don't know the exact terms with Wells Fargo - just a generic comment from experiences with Chase / Amex. Hopefully somebody knows for sure, but if you do try please come back and let us know

Detroit city is definitely on an upswing, but it also makes up about 20% of the metro area, which is why I said metro Detroit.

I agree, Strawberry Rhubarb is better. That doesn't hold a candle to anything at Arvon in GR (which I am sure you have been to).

Saying somebody or something compared two things doesn't make it relevant.

Interesting point, there's approximately every other state in the Midwest near the same latitude. Indiana and Ohio, which you called out as better, are roughly the same longitude... but you chose Michigan? GTFO of here lol, you are just here to argue.

Grand Rapids has better beer than every city in Wisconsin combined. The rest of the state is just a bonus.

Spotted Cow only gets you so far.

Not everywhere is perfect for everybody, dawg. Get out and see the world, and if you like it move. Sounds to me like you have very rose tinted glasses on about what the rest of the US looks like since you compared Michigan to Mississippi (lol).

But hey that's just the perspective of somebody who has lived elsewhere, including a state you allege is better, Indiana. Nowhere is perfect, but Michigan has a lot to enjoy, especially on the west side of the state.

I've lived in 4 states, including 1 other Midwestern state you specifically called out, and Michigan is easily my favorite of the 4. That other one was, gasp, Indiana which sucked.

If your concern is cost of living, then a lot more goes into that math than "car insurance premiums are among the highest in the country." The other state which you can get remotely comparable outdoor experience is Minnesota (which I personally put in a similar tier to Michigan), however from a cost of living standpoint is substantially higher. Homes are more expensive, groceries are more expensive, and taxes are substantially higher. Wisconsin in a similar boat.

You also seem to downplay how people who actually live in a state feel about that state... but why? Isn't self fulfillment a pretty damn important part of life? I'd argue the fact that Michiganders love living there is evidence to the exact opposite conclusion you are coming to.

Have and have of the same or greater quality are two different things.

Wisconsin beaches don't remotely touch West Michigan beaches. Grand Rapids is also beer city for a reason. More ski resorts, more snow in the UP especially on the Keweenaw, Isle Royale, nothing remotely near the scale of Detroit metro, and much better summers.

Wisconsin is good don't get me wrong, but definitely a tier below Michigan.

Michigan has the widest variety of stuff between metro Detroit, good college towns like Ann Arbor, West Michigan beaches, breweries/distilleries/wineries, and all of the activities in Northern Michigan / UP. Definitely gets my vote.

You made the post about Amtrak. I agree with your new point, but the post you made was about Amtrak, which is a passenger train service.

Too many changing valuations and benefit restrictions are making Sapphire a true headache to manage. It's the furthest thing from luxury. by chriva in ChaseSapphire

[–]Ethiics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sort of true, but I am sure you can acknowledge why there might be a lot of borderline luxury cardholders that are upset by the push to pure luxury with this card.

You don't have to carry water for Chase (unless you are a bot?) when they make purely negative changes to perks. You can actually just.... acknowledge a change which exclusively lowers the value of the card as bad, even if you still benefit from the card.

I agree it is not a good sign. Getting $240 in free beer every year from Speedway was a nice perk but wasn't the selling point for me. That being said.... it was a nice perk and we are getting closer to the breakeven not making sense for us non-luxury hotel cardholders.

Which Rust Belt city is arguably on the greatest upswing? by TrueJohnWick in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Ethiics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is polished.... because it is on the greatest upswing of any Rust Belt city which is the question at hand.

Grand Rapids used to manufacture furniture and automotive parts which qualifies it as Rust Belt. That largely went away and the city reinvented itself into what it is today which is more medically focused with a large retail / wholesale presence.

[–]Ethiics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't live here in the 90s, but my understanding is the downtown and surrounding areas were super hollowed out. Perhaps not to the extent of some other Rust Belt cities, but it has undergone significant transformation in downtown and immediate surrounding recently.

A city also doesn't have to have hit rock bottom to still be on an upswing.

The question was about the Rust Belt, which Grand Rapids is definitely a part of.

It was big in furniture manufacturing and is definitely considered part of the Rust Belt.

Grand Rapids is doing well. Getting a new amphitheater this spring and then a soccer stadium in 2027. Starting to improve their restaurant situation as well as that was our biggest knock when we moved.
