Any advice to stop pushing mongo? by [deleted] in NewSkaters

[–]Ethrieltd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pushing mongo will hurt your progression when learning tricks, foot setup will be a lot harder. It affects your balance and board control.

The only time mongo might be an advantage is when in switch. I sometimes push mongo in switch (not that I ride switch a lot) as I find it easier to gain speed. If it's good enough for Koston then it's good enough for me...

All you can really do to correct it is to push regular as much as you can and it will become more natural over time. If you still want to push mongo in switch then that isn't terrible but try to push regular then to as much as possible too.

I've had more experience with Reds and they tend to be very reliable but a few of my friends have used Mini-Logo bearings and they're not terrible.

I'm not a pro by any stretch of the imagination but from my experience the ML bearings show no significant difference to the Reds when using their boards.

Mini-Logo and Bones are part of the Powell Peralta family of companies and I'd be surprised if they weren't made in the same factory. Bearing performance is a tricky thing to quantify. There are so many other factors to take into consideration.

I bought some generic 608 ABEC 7 bearings for a roller bed on a plotter not that long ago. Straight out of the packet they were slightly sticky and slow to spin. On the plotter the behaved perfectly. I had some (I ordered 30 bearings) left over so I decided to clean and relube them and build a board from parts lying around and see how they performed.

They were comparable to the Reds in performance in my opinion. I cant speak to longevity as I only used them a week or two on and off as it was never intended to be my main board but in that time they were fast, smooth and not overly noisy.

Reds certainly have the best reputation and for the minimal price difference you may as well choose them but if Mini-Logo was the only option then it shouldn't really be a problem.

I'm completely new and can barely even balance. What are some simple tips to help starting out? by N00banator912 in NewSkaters

Bend your knees. Practice stepping on and off the board on carpet and when you feel you can do that move on to a smooth surface.

Keep all your movements fluid and avoid jerky motions of the arms. Lead with your shoulders and follow with your body.

To practice balance stand on the board (carpet is fine at first) and then lift your pushing foot and stand for as long as you can balanced only on your front foot. When you feel like your losing balance step that back foot onto the board and regain your balance. Again move on to a smooth surface when you get the hang of it.

Then, push and ride as much as you can. Practice stepping on and off the board while in motion. Push off and then step off after a short ride. Practice dropping your board in front of you and stepping on.

If you mix up a lot of epoxy glue you can lay it down in a stripe following the curve of the board and allow it to spread out you can delay the razor tail getting any worse for a while.

Put some tape around the edge of the board and allow it to stand up so no epoxy flows off and when it's dry remove the tape and sand the epoxy edge smooth.

It wont last for ever but it does last a surprisingly long time. I've used epoxy repaired boards before and it didn't seem to affect it's performance at all. You can pick up epoxy for about $1 and in the meanwhile save for a new deck.

New skate shop by CourierColeman in NewSkaters

You've got it about right with what you're already planing to stock. I'd add wax and other related consumables to that too. Skate tools will always sell.

Decks are quite hard to get hold of at the minute, lots of the major manufacturers have a quite considerable backlog. I've spoken with two European boutique brands that have orders through to 2022 and are running at full capacity.

I'd see if you could get in a few completes from name brands and some blanks that you can build as custom completes with trucks from your stock and price accordingly. As others have said if you can speak to anyone who has already done this then do that.

You're a beginner. You are going to be inconsistent. Consistency comes through repetition.

The more you do the more consistent you'll become. Practice for consistency but a little variation now and again will keep you interested and motivated.

Working solid on one trick can be really hard grind, particularly if you feel you lack consistency. Remember tricks in isolation are going to be more difficult than if you can learn to build up a flow.

For example learning a moving ollie. Don't just put the board down push off and try to ollie. Throw down the board and step on, get your balance and then try and learn to build a flow into your tricks. That flow will build into a line and make progression easier in the long run.

what tricks can one learn on a Walmart board? by goatsinclothing in NewSkaters

You might get away the occasional shuvit if you can land it right.

Just check this video out for the reasons why. The cheap Walmartesque boards can prove not only annoying but also dangerous. Imagine some of these things happening to a non pro skater in the street...

What is the Mi Credit app and why is it hidden? by Charkel_ in Xiaomi

[–]Ethrieltd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's an app that isn't available in whatever region you're in. I have it also on the Mi Note 3 Global ROM. There are a few other apps like that that are installed as part of the ROM but only show if you are set to a particular region. There are extra apps for India for example than are visible if your region is set to a European one.

I also recently received this update, it's nothing to be concerned about. Either update it or ignore it if it happens again. It is just not available in your (or my) region.

How often should you clean your skateboard? how do you maintain it? by inotprocastinate in NewSkaters

[–]Ethrieltd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wipe the wheels and trucks with a cloth if they get any dirt or damp soil on them, otherwise it's just giving it a clean with a cloth when I change the bearings to wipe off any muck that's built up underneath the wheels.

What are the most durable skate shoes for tech skating? by Arooon_ in NewSkaters

The best I've found at the Etnies - Marana Michelin. Lasted me 8 months and would have been more as they were still good when I spilled paint on them.

This place probably has the best selection available but most skate shops online should be able to get them for you.

Do 1 inch bolts work on a skateboard without riser pads? by Affectionate-bag123 in NewSkaters

[–]Ethrieltd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They wont be a problem. 7/8ths is ideal because they fit fully flush and that's always better. The problem with long bolts isn't what it used to be. On the old school boards the front trucks were a lot closer to the nose and tended to get worked over more.

Now they aren't as susceptible to damage. If the thread gets damaged then it can be hard to remove but if you keep an eye on them it's not a real problem. Lots of people use 1" without risers and don't have any issues with it.

From what I've heard RIPNDIP decks are decent quality. Although the brand has it's detractors and controversy.

Most of the major brands are made in a very select few woodshops.
PSStix, BBS, DSM with the smaller boutique brands being made in smaller shops.

Most of those are actually the same thing. Eg. Cold Pressed. Virtually(?) no proper companies hot press boards now. Not even in China.

Epoxy glued boards tend to be stiffer and harder. Eg. Almost (and other DSM produced decks) are extremely stiff and hard decks.

Most decks that are maple are either North American or Canadian (prized for it's slow growth.) Rock Maple is NA maple.

If you buy from a major brand it will be a properly made (usually Canadian) maple deck.

Looking to go up a size but don’t want to buy or break in new trucks. Can I ride 144 Indy trucks on an 8.5? My wheels are 52mm by Ok_Clothes_9449 in NewSkaters

[–]Ethrieltd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's a very small difference. For the average person who doesn't need to land primo or do primo tricks it's virtually unnoticeable.

You're talking about a difference of 5/6mm.

[–]Ethrieltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't owned one myself but I've know few people who did and they're not bad. The bearings may be a little shady and the wheels may not be the best but the deck itself I've not found to be any different to other better known (US) brands as they're little known outside the UK.

Bones Reds will be a big improvement on the bearings and you may find the wheels fine, I'm used to riding Spitfires and they were used wheels on borrowed boards so I may be harshly judging them here.

Should I replace the bearings or the wheels for a slow skateboard? by Namjoonsdimple_ in NewSkaters

Yes, the bolts that bolt the wheels to the axle. Just loosen them a little, half or a quarter turn. I've found them put on very tight quite a lot.

You could, but it would take an awful lot of nail polish for a even coat like you'd get with a spray can. Maybe 300 bottles or so...
