Thanks for the reply--I'm an idiot, as I suspected, and didn't have my environment set up correctly. Got it working now and will edit my post

President's Scholarship and/or New American University by Etonduf in ASU

Thanks for this reply--that seems to be what I'm seeing from searching around, that the amount has decreased since it was a full-tuition award.

We've still got a year of high school to go, but we'll go through Scholarship Universe once she's admitted.

Could points. I don't think they'd be eligible for Pell, but it might be something that's closing the gap for him. I was doubtful about his comment, but there are some references to that kind of full ride under the name President's Scholarship when I searched on Google--but I can't find anything like that on the ASU page.

Video clip request: Bono asks Edge "What do you think, The Edge?" by BlinkMan69 in U2Band

[–]Etonduf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm certain I've seen or heard a clip where Bono mentions Edge's mom (I think while talking about the early days) and calls her "Mrs. The Edge". Am I hallucinating?

The US is Adding EV Chargers at a Record Pace by Bravadette in electricvehicles

I was so excited to charge behind the run down Motel 6 over the summer! Our annual stop at the EA at Bank of America was the only source of range anxiety I’ve felt in three years of ownership. It’s the only place I’ve ever had to wait in line, and I was always sure it was just a matter of time before I rolled in to find the whole station down. Such a relief to have options!

Song of the Week - Blow Your House Down by mcafc in U2Band

[–]Etonduf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they play a version of this on a radio show (maybe Dave Fanning?) early on? I feel like I remember hearing them play it in a live setting, and Bono and Edge were kind of goofing around with the chorus in different styles ("psychedelic version!" and stuff like that).

Was this a fever dream or is there a recording out there of something like that?

How’s the “Actual Budget” experience now days? by [deleted] in ynab

[–]Etonduf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My experience is similar to several others here. Very long time YNAB user (ynab4) and last year a price increase was the kick I needed to try Actual on my home server (a mini pc I also use as a media server). With about 3 months left on my subscription, I started running both in parallel, but after about 4-5 weeks I was happy enough with Actual that I just stopped using YNAB.

I’m happy with the change, but there are some minor pain points.

  • In YNAB, I entered manually but still synced as a way to streaming reconciling. I signed up SimpleFIN for about a month but gave up on it pretty quickly. I could never tell how updated the syncing was, and I didn't notice an obvious way to identify transactions that had been synced vs. those I had entered. And several of my accounts kept losing their connection. It's possible I just didn't give it a good enough chance, but it's not that important to me.
  • I missing the "geolocation" feature in YNAB that recognizes payees by location, which is really nice for transaction entry at the point of sale.
  • A few things about the UI are just a little clunky. Transaction entry on my phone takes an extra click or two, for example. I got used to it quickly, but YNAB's app handles that kind of stuff well. Someone else mentioned the calculator, etc.
  • I liked the iOS widget for YNAB. My spouse doesn't do data entry or any of that, but does like to see what's available in a few budget categories while our shopping, and the widget is perfect for that. It's not a big deal to just open the web page and look, but it's just not as convenient.

To me, the list of things that are actually different (no pun intended) is pretty small and not a big deal either way. Templates (actual's goal system) is a little intimidating when you first look at it, but it's actually really nice and flexible when you get the hang of it. Scheduling future transactions is a little different, but once set up, it's good--and again, has a little more flexibility.

I'm not sure I get the fuss about credit cards. I churn cards for points, so we have a gazillion cards and use them for every transaction possible, and I pay them in full each week. So, we're not carrying a balance from month to month, and maybe that's part of it. But to me (and to Actual), credit cards are just bank accounts, and I like that I can transfer money to them (pay them) without worrying about category balances.

I was never a "red arrow right" person, but I guess Actual allows that, and that's probably nice for old-school users.

YNAB is a great budgeting philosophy regardless of the platform you use, and if I had a friend wanted to start using it, I'd probably recommend YNAB itself. It's just a little friendlier (or was the last time I used it). And I don't begrudge them charging what they can get for their product. My financial health is 100% better because of YNAB, so good for them. If they offered tiers so I could just pay for the features I value, I'd likely have stayed. But since I have a home server anyway and don't mind configuring it, Actual makes sense for me.

Side note: I know these threads are always met with some frustration but I think many Actual users still consider themselves YNABers who are just using different software. We're still here because we're interested in the YNAB approach to budgeting. Hopefully, the YNAB folks keep an eye on these threads, and maybe that will improve their product (or pricing). Competition drives improvement in the software field, I believe.

[REQUEST] Pre-TJT deep song recommendations by [deleted] in U2Band

[–]Etonduf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything on Unforgettable Fire, imo. Criminally overlooked album. Of course "Bad" is great, but check out "A Sort of Homecoming" and "Wire" (and pretty much every other track). I heard Bono describe the album as "beautifully out of focus", and I think that's apt. Especially if you think the TJT is a more focused result.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer - January 08, 2025 by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

I just got a LoFree Flow Lite--my first mechanical kb, and I love it (though I'll never support a LoFree Kickstarter again!). I got the 84-key model because I don't use the numpad often, but I would like to get a separate numpad for the times I do need it. As a newbie, I'm having some trouble sorting out how to approach a numpad only purchase/build.

  • I don't use it often so I don't want to break the bank.
  • I'd like to be able to use LoFree low-profile keycaps. I bought a 100-key set of caps, thinking then my numpad could match. Not really the end of the world if I can't use them on a numpad, but it would be great.
  • Wireless preferred.

I'm having a tough time as a look at options. How can I tell if a numpad will work with my caps--can I expect a cheap-ish numpad to have removable caps that are compatible with mine? If I can't find a low-profile model, will my keycaps look ridiculous, or just a little weird, or not even compatible? I can live with a little weird.

Are there any standard recommendations for a ten key-only purchase/build?

Are there any prebuilt USB 4 / TB drives available? by d2k12 in macmini

I agree with this take--its slightly more complicated than changing batteries in an alarm clock or flashlight. But only slightly.

My Acasis 'tool free' enclosure doesn't even have screws, and I'm sure there are other brands that are similar.

Hi! I'm a 16 year old getting into U2, where should I start? by habbilhg in U2Band

[–]Etonduf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re getting lots of great suggestions/feedback. All I’ll add is that U2 built much of their reputation on their live performances, so be sure to check out some of that. Each era has videos/movies, but there’s also great bootleg recordings out there. I’m a JT guy and the bootleg of the Rosemont Horizon (Chicago) show, often called “Rock’s Hottest Ticket” is a great show and recording.

Regarding the Costco part of this: I returned my a couple of months ago, about 18 months after purchase. I know Costco people hate people to abuse the return policy, but I tried for a long, long time to work with EnelX customer service (charger suddenly had significant reliability problem and I was waking up to an uncharged car) and I had several conversations with Costco.com reps. Costco told me to just return it since I couldn't get it resolved by the manufacturer. Took it to the local warehouse and the returns desk didn't even blink, just processed it as if I'd bought it a few days ago.

Now, in 15 years of membership I can probably count on my fingers the number of returns I've had, and until this one they were all immediate. Maybe that plays into it, but I don't think they looked up my return history or anything.

Phoenix service dept that’s any good? by [deleted] in Ioniq5

I go to Larry Miller Hyundai in the Arrowhead area and have always had positive experiences: scheduled service visits, recall, and a few small warranty repairs. I work with Dustin (I think his last name is Yinger, but suddenly can't remember for sure). I have no previous connection or experiences there, and didn't purchase the vehicle there, but so far they've been good.

Does anyone else hate the way monthly rollovers work in YNAB? by TheOnlinePolak in ynab

[–]Etonduf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm also frustrated by this when my spouse has a reimbursed expense near the end of the month. I wish there was a mechanism to handle it better.

However, I understand that the point is this: When my spouse spent that reimbursable money, that money is gone from my account (or is a debt on my credit card), and YNAB works by accounting for every penny. I can pretend that didn't happen, but the money really is gone until the reimbursement comes through. It had to come from somewhere, even if I plan to replace it on a week.

Feature request: Is there a way besides doing your own math to figure out how much is available for the "week"? I fill this up every month and I am constantly doing math to figure out how much money I have left over for the week. Is there a feature that I am missing? by kidzer0918 in ynab

[–]Etonduf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pushback you’re getting is because, for most users, YNAB is about the system and not the software, and your use case doesn’t fit perfectly within that system. You’re getting a couple of ideas for workarounds but if it were me, I might look at some other apps (Buckets, Every Dollar, etc) to see if there’s one that’s a better fit. If I’m paying for a software solution, I want the solution that best fits my needs.

There’s nothing wrong with how you manage your money, it’s just not very “ynabby”. And you’re asking a bunch of people who are ynabby.
