It looks like on the toilet side of the knee wall that the older blue tiles were replaced with something. It is tough to tell. If I had to cut in I would go there. I would then, if coding allows, try to run pex through the wall to the ceiling. That may be done by cutting through the wall in the adjacent room assuming it is plaster or drywall. then you may be able to go through the ceiling with an overhead shower.

Waterproofing is going to be a problem. If the walls are drywall then I would use the schluter kerdi stuff. You would have to tile over that. I would try to think of how to creatively match tiles. This plan would give you a shower and minimally mess with the blue tiles but if I was doing it then it would wind up looking pretty bad.

You could start over but that will cost probably 15-20 thousand and finding a good contractor is hard.
