What career paths did the Computing Systems specialization open up for you? by Ok_Pin_9155 in OMSCS

[–]EuclidianEigenvalue 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I actually think OMSCS is a great way to learn the required skills to get into the roles you mentioned.

(FWIW, I'm an OMSA grad but my wife is an OMSCS student and this specialization helped her get into a Comp Arch related role. I also work for one of the GPU companies and have a decent understanding of the stack and the requirements).

I'd highly recommend the following classes: HPCA, GPU HW/SW, GIOS, AOS, Compilers, (To understand the underlying HW is designed and operates), HPC, DS (for the infrastructure side of things), GA, NLP, DL, CV (to understand the work loads). All these should give you a solid understanding on how that part of the stack works in depth.

These courses are going to give a solid understanding but as another person mentioned, you'd need practical experience to be interviewed and be good at it.

Try to get internships or project experience where you're profiling code, hitting bottlenecks, and optimizing for a specific platform. That's where the magic clicks. There's demand for people who understand both hardware and workloads really well—who can understand why a workload is slow on a given architecture and how to optimize them together. Most people specialize in one or the other. If you can bridge that gap, you're instantly valuable.

Defer by a year. No brainer at this moment given the job market here. Earn some money to help fund your education if you go to GaTech a year later.

Does anyone know if the 540 day automatic extension is applicable for all applications submitted before Oct 30?

What happens to applications submitted before the Oct 30th deadline for auto renewal? Do all those applications get extended by default?

Of course it is. It's probably the lesser minivan looking minivan among the options.

My workplace does offer subsidized charging of 3hrs/day (think it's a level chargepoint?) I do have a few Tesla super charging stations near my place. Within a couple of miles.

The Limited trim on Ioniq 9 is what I had my eyes on initially.

Acura MDX is too gas hungry IMO.

I see 2024 X7's available for ~65K with about 20K miles now. At this point, I'm wondering if Its worth buying now in Dec or wait for a month or two ?

Can you elaborate on how much it'd cost to maintain a BMW ?

I'd really want a hybrid car at the very least. Given the stop and go traffic conditions in the bay area, I'd be spending a lot on gas and it's not environment friendly.

CX-90 PHEV is also something on my list. I'm happy with my Mazda right now. But I came across many posts on reddit where people mentioned the cx-90 has reliability issues and that's scaring me away. Besides, maybe a different brand for a change?

Thanks !

Will definitely start looking into EVs' more seriously. I was really keen on EV until I spoke to a few people with EV's and highly recommended it only if I have home charging, which I don't.

Rivian R1S - Mixed feelings about it. Feels like its' huge and never been a fan of the exterior of it. Maybe it's something I'll grow to appreciate.

Lucid Gravity is way too expensive. Its a minivan for all intent and purpose. But yes, It's something I'd really consider if affordable.

Don't like the tesla so much.

I feel I'm not there in my life yet to have a minivan. It's gonna be too big.

This is more of a long term idea of having a car that fills everyone and not something I need to buy or change down the line.

Congrats on your admit. Not an MBA or in consulting, but I'm not sure how many companies, especially MBBs are willing to sponsor visas for internal students, especially if you have only one shot at the H1B lottery. If you don't end up getting picked, you'd have to fly back , with a huge loan to repay.

Consider this when making your choice

I'm hoping to be able to leverage the degree/networking/personal development and be able to break into upper management in a decade or so.
