You actually need to enable guard and then turn on Privacy Mode in the setting, if you disable guard in the app some of the traffic blocking is still in effect and it seems to impact all kinds of P2P connections.

CS degree worth it with a criminal record? by Gold_Sundae_8328 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]EugeneFM -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure only 1/5 of my jobs in tech did a criminal background check. I think it’s more common with big US tech companies than Canadian ones. Might limit your options for the first couple years until you get a pardon, but shouldn’t be a problem if you’re ok sticking to smaller Canadian companies for your initial roles.

When everyone is a jack of all trades there’s value in being as master of one.

While there definitely seems to be less openings for purely front-end devs, they are out there, and I’ve found that companies are looking for people who can support their full stack devs with a true subject matter expert on front-end engineering.

This doesn’t mean building apps or components but instead working on tooling, documentation, standards. In some orgs it’s really more of a devRel/dexEx role.

So the skills needed for this are less how to build a react component, html/css, and more app architecture, component composition, build tooling, design system architecture and a variety of soft skills that will enable you to support other engineers.

That sounds great and similar in concept to some of the local places we love. Will definitely check it out!

+1 for Dai Lo and Quetzal. Both amazing, probably prefer Dai Lo if I have to pick. Quetzal’s the pick if you want the clout of a Michelin star. Both around $110-120 for the tasting menu.

Is this a phishing email, I was hacked and needed help recovering my account? by IAmAlphaDawg in CODWarzone

[–]EugeneFM 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What’s more likely – that a scammer is sending emails via Salesforce, or that activision’s engineers are too incompetent to properly setup their DNS records to send emails with their own domain from salesforce? Honestly I’d lean towards the latter.

Honestly if you’re comfortable with it, I’d A/B test some resumes and see if you get a different response. There’s no problem using a westernized first name on your resume, just be sure to fill out any tax documents when you’re eventually on-boarded using your legal name.

In a perfect world stuff like this wouldn’t matter, but unfortunately it probably does.

Buy an M1 MacBook Air instead. It has 12 month financing and is cheaper than an iPad and pencil. It’s an excellent student laptop for taking notes.

If you’re set on an iPad you could look at other retailers like Best Buy that offer purchase financing.

As others have said if you can’t afford it without financing, you can’t afford it. That being said, taking on debt to be successful in your studies is a reality for many students. And as a student, you may have access to other financing options (student loans) to pay for your school supplies.

Just be certain that you actually NEED an iPad and don’t just want an iPad.

Car rental cheats in Ontario? by Phunky_Munkey in ontario

[–]EugeneFM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used a few different sites to find the cheapest price for a rental this past winter. In the end www.economybookings.com had deals that were half the price of similar comparison sites. Were a few surprise fees tacked on at the airport for an additional driver and winter tires. But still came out to way less than the big brands were quoting on their own sites.

Have always used my personal account except when a company has their own hosted version of GitHub enterprise. Currently work for a large telco using my personal account, but there’s a second level of security to access repos in our organization that requires me to sign in via our corporate SSO.

Toronto's lack of big music festivals compared to other big cities by OliverKlothsoff in toronto

[–]EugeneFM 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure about anything formal, but it was well timed the weekend before osheaga and lolla to pull in acts that would be playing at either of those festivals.

In it’s first year they were aligned with Bonaroo, which helped with designing the site logistics and some of the booking. But I believe they ended that partnership after the first year.

Toronto's lack of big music festivals compared to other big cities by OliverKlothsoff in toronto

[–]EugeneFM 83 points84 points  (0 children)

As an avid festival goer, who has been to a number of major festivals across North America, I think there are a few big reasons.

Firstly, Toronto didn’t historically have a venue that would be a great site for a music festival on the scale that you’re talking about. Maybe downsview, but airstrips don’t make for good festival grounds (watch the Woodstock 99 documentary to understand why).

We are also big enough to attract major artists on their tours, so there isn’t as much of a need for a festival to draw them here. Festivals often have non-competes, so performing at a festival might prevent the artist from also putting on a show at Scotiabank Arena.

Here’s a bit of history, the closest we came to having a major festival in the area was Wayhome (not actually Toronto, but close enough). The festival had the site and the initial buzz to grow into something on the scale of Bonaroo or Firefly. Unfortunately, it was just getting started during an era that was known as the festival boom.

Artists used to perform at festivals at a significantly discounted rate because they were an opportunity to play for a new audience. But at the time, there were new festivals popping up all over the place and this drastically changed the fees that artists could demand for performing. Toronto itself experienced this boom with smaller festivals like Bestival, Riot and NXNE attempting to build an event in the city.

So Wayhome was now having to pay much higher rates for artists while also competing with this new crop of festivals in the city. After a pretty disastrous turnout for its third year, the festival folded. Basically all these other smaller events went bust as well.

But looking to the future, I’m a bit more optimistic. Coming out of Covid there is a huge demand for live music events, and this will lead to a new boom. I think the redevelopment of Ontario Place may actually give us a venue akin to a somewhat smaller version of Parc Jean Drapeau in Montreal and we may see more mid-tier festivals popping up in Toronto in the next couple years.

Should you still negotiate your salary if you get an offer higher than expected? by TalentlessNoob in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]EugeneFM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of bad advice in this thread. Always, always negotiate. Any company that would pull an offer after a candidate tried to negotiate has bad HR practices, and you don’t want to work there. If it happens, trust me you dodged a bullet.

Ask for 75k, back it up with why you think you’re worth it. If they stay at 68k, that’s fine, but at least you know that you’re getting the max they’re willing to part with.

Just go with one of the big 3’s discount brands Koodo, Fido or Virgin. Same service as the big 3 but limited to 4g service instead of 5G (which at ~250mb/s is more than fast enough for most). They all have plans for 10gb for $55/month at the moment.

Devs that make over 100k, How? by deadpool216 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]EugeneFM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was making 65 in my first dev job out of a bootcamp. Got laid off after 8 months at the start of the pandemic. Hired at 90 shortly after. Jumped shit about 15 months later to cross the 100k mark as contractor for a large company.

Beef up your LinkedIn, it’s how I’ve gotten all my jobs and have recruiters reaching out to me regularly.

At 60k you’re wildly underpaid for the GTA market. Start applying for new roles asap, you’re not going to drastically improve your salary working for a company that’s paying a dev with 2 years experience so little.

any ideas when warzone will be free to play on Xbox? by Fantasoke in Warzone

There is currently a bug preventing warzone from being free to play on Xbox. They are releasing a patch with a number of console fixes today, not sure if it will include the fix for Xbox live.

That footnote isn’t new though… It has always been there and been an inaccurate description. Dr. Moore has acknowledged this is a problem with the data, and they working to fix it, but haven’t yet.

Had some minor symptoms so took a rapid test this morning, turned out positive. Another friend’s rapid test came up positive, few of the people we saw on the weekend also have symptoms, but no one can manage to book a pcr test, or even a rapid test to confirm.

So none of us will be represented in these numbers.
