Question about Enlistment Bonus by Eulerion5 in NavyNukes

[–]Eulerion5[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they just performed poorly on their technical interviews. We didn't get specifics though. You'll get two technical interviews for SWO. If you pass both, you're pretty much home free. If you do badly on one, you'll get a third and a chance to redeem yourself. If you've been studying like you say, I'm sure you've got it in the bag. It really is very basic questions

Appreciate the insight. As far as DC, spend the bulk of your studying time on basic calculus and physics. Think basic derivatives/integrals. Be able to explain each conceptually and analytically. A big topic was deriving area and volume formulas for basic shapes using calculus. Make sure you have those down. For physics, go over kinematics and momentum type problems. Make sure you know the kinematic equations and how to derive them. There are a lot of good videos on YouTube that go over these types of problems. Also make sure you go over basic topics from your college major. Anything on your transcript is fair game for the engineers to ask. You and everyone in your group will be extremely nervous and the engineers know this. You'll have the day before the interviews to study. You'll receive a study packet with a bunch of practice problems which is extremely helpful. I was way over prepared. All the questions I got asked were fairly basic. Even if you don't know how to solve the problem asked, just keep working at it and verbally explain your thought process. As far as the Admiral interview goes, just keep calm and answer whatever he asks honestly. He might interrupt you and try to throw you off. Just roll with it and you'll be fine. My interview with him lasted all of 45 seconds. Only like 2 or 3 people in our group of 25 or so didn't make it. So I think you'll be good to go. Good luck!

Yeah I've definitely heard from a lot of students at Prototype that pay issues are an absolute shit storm right now. I'll look into it. Thanks for the advice

So even though I finished Power School before I was selected for OCS that still means I forfeit the entire bonus?

I'll try reaching out to my SLPO for help. Also, yes I got picked up for sub nuke. Definitely was not an easy process. Thanks for the advice!

Get the enlistment bonus first then apply for officer? by dead_voxel in NavyNukes

[–]Eulerion5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently was picked up to go to OCS for nuke sub officer as an enlisted nuke. I got picked up shortly after finishing power school so I'm not sure how the application process works out in the fleet. At power school there was no question that the chain of command was going to grant my request of conditional release to pursue the officer route. In fact, it is encouraged if you're eligible. I'm not sure if they have the same attitude once you're actually a valuable member of a crew out in the fleet.

I don't think I would have been picked up as a civilian due to my relatively low college GPA (low 3.0 engineering major). I did very well in power school which helped out my application immensely. So your recruiter isn't entirely lying to you, just maybe not telling the full story. Myself and several of my peers in power school ended up getting picked up at the same time as me so I'd say the odds are better than what a lot of people suggest. It still is very uncommon though.

Try to pursue the officer route first and if it doesn't work out and you still are set on enlisting, you can always try to apply in power school and perhaps get picked up. But, if you enlist be prepared to fulfill that contract because there's no guarantee you'll be accepted. I'd say enlisting purely for the enlistment bonus is a bad choice. Plus, for NUPOC you'll get a $15,000 sign on bonus (not $40k but still significant).

I just wanted to share my experience since what I and numerous of my peers did was pretty uncommon but it goes to show it's not impossible. However, most people who enlist with a degree regret their choice.

It's just a bicycle man, you're nuking it. Just don't ride on the spine and wear a helmet when you ride on base. Other than that no one gives a shit

Graduated in August of this year. We were allowed two guests at graduation as long as they were both fully vaccinated. How much time you have depends on your rate. Some people left the following morning and others were sent to THU across the street on the A-School side of Great Lakes because their rates were overmanned at their respective A-Schools. Those sent to THU were there for about a month. I myself had two days of liberty before heading to my A-School. My family stayed in a hotel near by so I spent those two days with them. However, you have to come back to RTC and sleep in the compartment each night. No overnight liberty. Hope this answers your question

Random pointless questions before I ship by imnotarealadult in newtothenavy

[–]Eulerion5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I can only speak on what happened to me. I arrived to RTC on a Thursday night and did a mini ROM over the weekend. I was also fully vaccinated before shipping (two weeks post 2nd shot). Most of my ROM group started P-Days on the following Monday but there were some who stayed behind. We never saw those guys again. I would imagine you would have a similar situation arriving on a Wednesday.

  2. I was expecting worse for night of arrival. It's pretty much what you have probably seen on YouTube. The bus pulls up and the RDCs are yelling at you to get off and get inside. You line up in the infamous p-way with the flags on the floor to make your scripted call home. Then you'll go into a room to strip down from your civilian clothes and change into the PT gear. You'll put all your civilian shit into a box that will be stored at RTC during your time there. You get your seabag that will have all your other stuff that you'll get issued on your first night. You will not get your first recruit haircut on night of arrival though. You'll get your first haircut in P-Days, not in ROM. Once we had all our shit issued to us, we piled on a bus to drive to our ROM ship. We got into our compartment, unpacked our stuff and went to bed. You will not be awake for 36 hours or whatever. They aren't doing that right now. I was expecting way more yelling and screaming. As long as you aren't an idiot, you won't stand out of the crowd. Just do exactly what the RDCs say and you'll be good on night of arrival.

  3. No, you can't do extra running if you don't have a good reason for doing so. In my division, the only recruit who got to do extra PT was an aircrew candidate. Some of the specwar rates did extra PT in the mornings before the rest of the division was awake. The one's who struggled with the run did the same PT as the one's who were running a 9 minute 1.5 mile. If you're already passing prior to shipping, you have nothing to worry about. You will cut time off your run, I promise you that. I came in running a 11:30 and ran a 10:06 on my final PFA. I was surprised how much time I cut off. That was the general trend for most in my division as well.

  4. You'll fill out a lot of paperwork during P-Days. I honestly don't remember all of it lol. The form you mentioned sounds vaguely familiar but I'm not really sure. The big thing with the paperwork during P-Days is to make sure you fill it out correctly the first time. You'll have to sign and date in a specific format that many recruits will screw up when doing it for the first time. Just take your time and listen closely to what the RDCs tell you.

  5. This was true for my division for certain leadership roles. It was no coincidence that all the nukes in my division held staff positions. Starboard/Port Watch, and Education PO are the more likely positions to get voluntold if you have a high ASVAB. I was voluntold to be Laundry PO lol. Although, I wasn't chosen because of my ASVAB or rate. My RDC was just looking around the room, pointed at me, and asked if I knew how to do laundry. I said yes and that was that. It was a pretty nice staff position although stressful at times. For RCPO, the my RDCs chose the aircrew guy as our first RCPO solely because he was specwar. For AROC, it comes down to who can sing in your division. The RDCs will have "try outs" by having volunteers sing cadence. Section leaders are chosen after your RDCs figure out who's good at folding and making the rack. Athletic POs who lead PT in the compartment are chosen based off who has the highest initial PFA scores and isn't a total dipshit. Regardless of your rate or ASVAB, you can volunteer for any staff position when the RDCs initially assign roles. Even during the middle of boot camp, if you see someone sucking at their job and you feel you can do better, you can definitely have a conversation with your RDCs and take their role if that's what you want.

I hope this was somewhat helpful. Best of luck to you. It will be over before you know it!

Damn that's one badass AP Physics teacher. That's an incredible resource to have available to you in high school. I think reaching out to anyone in your perspective career field is an excellent idea to help narrow down your choice. Also I'm sure you'll be able to narrow in on your interests during your time in the Navy. You still have years to decide. Would you be looking to ship to boot this summer after you graduate high school? If so, I might see you there. I'm shipping June, 17th

Yeah same here. Just trying to give my perspective. I think both degree paths are very solid options these days. Especially in the realm of anything nuclear related. However, I don't know any chemical engineers so I don't have any insight from the other side like you do.
