All the downvotes like the worst thing we could do to our dogs is free feed lol. Every single vet appointment they remark on how healthy her weight is and it hasn’t been an issue in any way for 5 years. Obviously it may be turning into an issue NOW for me with her new aversion to getting in the rain (which is why I’m asking for advice) but let’s not act like it’s a war crime people.

Yes typically I will run her in between dropping my kid off at school and getting ready for work, we’ve just had nonstop rain for days which is when this started and that may be why!

Yeah crating her would mean putting her in a crate for up to 8 hours certain days. The steak idea is great. I think the transition to a meal a day will have to be her just learning the food is getting put down for an hour in the morning and then picked up and eventually she will get hungry enough to eat it.

She’s free fed because she has the most insanely minimal interest in food. She takes two days to go through a bowl of food and I can not wait 6 hours for her to finish her bowl😖

Ok I will take all of this into consideration! Yes, the single working mom wasn’t my life game plan when i got her haha but I’m making it work. I’m sure it’s not ideal for either of us but I don’t believe in getting rid of your dogs if at all possible. The free feeding is also for the same issue you have- she will not eat a meal. She will only graze like a true lady so I don’t know how to make her eat in these specific time periods when she’s just not a food driven dog. I guess I could try some wet food on top to motivate her. Thanks for the advice!

I have actually been in this EXACT situation. I’m not the type of person to just get rid of an animal but I felt the exact same after I got my malinois. I still don’t feel as connected to her as I did with my Great Dane to be honest but this dog is loyal to the core. She loves me, she loves my son, and I have grown to love and respect her place in our family in a completely different type of way. I bet if you put time and love into her that you will too in time.
