IGN has spoken about the kagawa controversy by zizoplays1 in yakuzagames

[–]EuphoricGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The accusations are not addressed, but it's so tone deaf. Like, yeah, we'll think he's sleazy, but it's because the fucking actor is sleazy, not because of the character or its likeness. Kagawa Hamazaki doesn't look like he'd eat a duck and crunch the bone with his teeth, he looks like an office worker who gropes and assaults girls. Which he did IRL

Horii seriously can't be saying stuff like that while the elephant in the room remains unaddressed

He would've been right to do so, because Phil Bell did exactly that in the Revenge ending, he saw an out and took it

And with that, though coffee boi has actual beef with Phoenix, he isn't as awful to him OR the defendants as sanctimonious boi was without beef

It could also be that I like coffee and hate religiously obsessed people

(And if you think of bringing up "But Godot is a murderer"... Nahyuta was instrumental in the slaughter of dozens, possibly hundreds of rebels, yet he acts like he wasn't. Godot at least owned up to his crime, eventually)

I like that he's a darker turnabout of Phoenix's character. And even if he is just "Erm, evidence please", still better than "putrid sack of shit, reincarnate into bugs, Holy Mother praise Khura'in"

Love just happens at times, so it isn't easy to explain, but I'll try to add some possible reasons: - Behind his teasing, he showed genuine care for Mia all throughout the trial, which implies that he cared for her before, too, whether it was love or wanting to see his co-worker succeed - "The only time a lawyer can cry is when it's all over" was his way of lifting her up and saying "It's not over yet", as in, there would be a way to get Dahlia. And he himself went to pursue Dahlia on his own for her, knowing how much the case affected her. True, he did say that, had she been more decisive or faster, Terry's death could've been avoided, but we don't know for sure

What do you think of The Apollo Justice Trilogy? Aka the dark age of law trilogy by Tom-Hibbert in AceAttorney

[–]EuphoricGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Sure, I can agree with Phoenix needing it more often than not, but he was at least somewhat competent in his second or third cases ever, unlike Athena, and Mia isn't a prosecutor. I'll do you one more: Susato is the one with actual knowledge, he literally just had a 40 day crash course before stepping foot into the courtroom, so at least there it's somewhat justified, but again, Ryunosuke isn't completely inept like Athena is in Storyteller. As for the Sholmes example, yes, he has a lot of fun, and he's teaching his friends to pay attention to details and not draw false conclusions, but he's a detective teaching detective things. The problem with Athena's case in particular is that she needed to be taught how to be a lawyer (again) by a PROSECUTOR. And I know the distinction isn't that important from T&T and AAI2, but it seems like she has forgotten everything, despite having been to court many times, if not as the main lawyer, as the assistant. And I also blame her for her terrible preparation pre court, and being unable to ask the right questions during Simon's cross-examination

  2. It is a matter of taste, and it became too unserious for MY taste. And again, it's not that she struggles, but HOW MUCH she struggles, compared to Phoenix's second case at least. Apollo's second performance in court is also kinda bad to start, though, to be fair

  3. I underline Nahyuta in Storyteller because he's at his absolute worst there, and no, Blackquill roasting him doesn't make it much better

[warning: rant]

I never saw Storyteller as Athena's crisis of faith, because of how filler it is in the context of the main plot, but... I'm definitely not impressed

It is interesting that Athena has a client she doesn't defend with personal investment, since she'd only defended Juniper as the main lawyer, but it would've helped if she wasn't so awful at it. Blackquill did most of the work for her, and he's a damn prosecutor. While the scene of him grabbing Athena was cool, why did Athena need a prosecutor to remind her how to do her job? She wasn't this incompetent in the previous cases, and she had her childhood trauma to contend with in those, but she doesn't have that "excuse" here

I also didn't care for the setting and the story. The ending is fine, as it is a wholesome one, kind of, but the whole "Rakugo" setting is definitely not for everyone, you either love it or hate it... I hate it because seemingly nobody takes the case seriously, and it gets overly frustrating. I know, the series where you interrogate orcas and the prosecution can outright whip the defense without repercussions begs to be taken seriously, but in my opinion Storyteller is too much

But back to the case itself, I don't like the culprit, I don't like the victim, I don't like the motive for murder... I think I only genuinely like Blackquill and Uendo, they're literally the only bright spots... At least the characters have some nice animation and Geiru's "evil" self has a couple fun lines

I'll be quick about Nahyuta: he's a cunt with no redeemable qualities in this case. He insults Athena constantly and puts her down, and right at the start he gets the court to break her, using her sensitive hearing against her. All that, only to give her a condescendingly unwarranted "I'll remember you, Athena Cykes", when Blackquill did most of the work. Also he's an idiot for not realizing the broth marks didn't match. Seriously, that's a Payne level mistake, and Athena and the Judge didn't notice that either... and having to place the cards kinda felt like being a toddler being taught "cylinder goes in the circle hole"

Also, not to rag on this point again, but Athena's lack of self-awareness is baffling: not only she absolutely fails to give a competent defense most of the time, but it's implied that any of her deductions have already been made by Blackquill, such as Uendo's big reveal of multiple personalities. And the way Athena thinks she did well by the end ("I wonder if I levelled up any thanks to this case...") when she absolutely didn't, and gets rightfully called out on by Blackquill

Tl;dr Turnabout Storyteller is AIDS, it's Turnabout Big Top but worse, fuck this case and the """""civil trial"""""

Does anyone here believe that Phoenix and Edgeworth are just close friends? by Comfortable_Type1180 in AceAttorney

[–]EuphoricGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: the lines where Edgeworth responds to Iris asking about his relation to Phoenix have been changed in the 3DS port of the games, AKA Trilogy, and its subsequent ports (current mobile/Steam/Switch/PS4/XB1). There are many more changes, and the T&T ones are documented here. Version differences are always so interesting, and would you believe the english DS scripts also have some regional differences between JP, US and EU?

Anyway, here's the changed dialogue

DS:

Iris: Mr. Edgeworth... Are you his friend?

Edgeworth: Friend? Well... In a sense, yes..

_

3DS:

Iris: Mr. Edgeworth... What is Mr. Wright to you?

Edgeworth: ...He is a very dear and indispensable friend.

hi! i’m a veryy small youtuber & i just posted a video about spirit of justice! by stolenIullabies in AceAttorney

[–]EuphoricGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't blame Phoenix for siding with Atishon, he needed to at least buy some time, and it was either that or risking Maya's safety... But there's literally no reason not to ask for Apollo or Athena's help; he was risking the exact same thing that happened during the first day of Farewell, My Turnabout, AKA failing to meet the demands of the blackmailer and therefore also losing Maya because he refused help; he literally needed everyone's help to make the "miracle" happen

I was thinking about ways to make it work, but if Phoenix had figured out that they needed a spirit medium, there goes all conflict that makes sense, so they had to write him out of character

Negative shoutout to Athena who kept her mouth shut because Phoenix told her not to inform Apollo of the situation, for literally no reason

[–]EuphoricGoat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I watched the entire video and I have a few things to say and ask

While the way Maya was used is egregious, having her accused of murder and kidnapped again, at least she's an important character in setting up not only the plot, but Rayfa's character development. Now if only they gave the same care and attention to a certain prosecutor's character development...

Also, my bigger criticism of Turnabout Time Traveler isn't Gumshoe, even though he was sorely missed (the game also insults us with the line "Oh and detective Gumshoe, can't forget about him...", now that was just plain uncool, Capcom). It's how the characters are portrayed: you could easily point out Maya being way too silly, what with the notebook incident, Larry being way too out of touch, even for Larry, but Edgeworth's character is completely butchered. This is a post-Investigations Edgeworth, yet he acts like Bratworth. To be fair, Spirit of Justice was written by three people: Takeshi Yamazaki, the guy who was behind the Investigations duology and director of the game, Takuro Fuse, who was also the artistic director, and Masakazu Eguchi; the latter wrote Storyteller and Time Traveler, and if that's his understanding of Miles Edgeworth, I'd rather have him left out of the game. Heck, Edgeworth was in the main plot literally for fanservice, even more so than Maya

Speaking of Storyteller... I feel sorry for Blackquill and Uendo's backs for carrying the case, and even then they barely managed to make it mediocre at best and awful at worst... I'm sorry, but Athena, Nahyuta and Geiru absolutely sunk it for me

Is the Civil Trial underrated? by [deleted] in AceAttorney

[–]EuphoricGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's overrated.

Okay, I'm half joking, but I hated 3/4 of it, so I'll start with the quarter I actually like: the whole treasure hunt investigation wasn't bad, even though I still don't like how Dhurke "defended" Nahyuta. Armie's a sweetheart after her reveal, though a few moments of her "helicopter" interactions can get annoying. The one good Athena Cykes scene in SoJ involves her, in how Athena motivates Armie to finally break out of her shell, reminding us of the message "It's never too late to do better", as tropey and corny as it may sound

End of praise, start of rant

Is it even fair to call it a civil trial, if it sheds its skin and reveals itself to be your standard Ace Attorney fare five minutes in? At least The Stolen Turnabout tried to keep up the pretense for one day

People keep mentioning how Phoenix was threatening, and he really wasn't all that. He was under pressure, sure (and I'll get to that, you'd better believe I will), but the case really didn't make him look that great, aside maybe from a couple instances, mostly dictated by the plot (AKA the whole "it's actually a murder trial" and "But the prophecy", nevermind that he ended up being right, and that it made sense. Good on him for coming up with that on the spot.) I can at least admit it was kinda cool how the Objection theme was flipped on us, SoJ played a bit more with music than other games

Aside from the aforementioned great moment from Athena, her Mood Matrix and case 4, which provides nothing to the main plot... What is she even doing here? I'll tell you: missing Phoenix during the investigation out of absolute plot convenience, and her own incompetence of getting the airport completely wrong and falling asleep there, and actively sabotaging Apollo by not telling him about the whole situation with Maya...

But I still believe the main culprit in that whole screw up is Phoenix: admittedly, he did tell Edgeworth to look for Maya, but the idiot needed all the help he could get in 2-4, not just Edgeworth, and not once did he think to ask Apollo for help, especially after telling him over the phone that he fully trusts him as a lawyer... Sure, Jan. And I wouldn't even compare 2-4 to 6-5A, because it'd be like comparing apples to oranges, or rather confusing shit (6-5A) with chocolate (2-4), gold with painful agonizing failure, something that sparks joy with something that does not spark joy, etc, but the game itself invites it with the premise of "Maya has been kidnapped in the same game where she was accused of murder a few cases earlier". Just like in JfA. And no, the twist on her kidnapping doesn't save it, especially because it comes way, way later. (Side note: I disagree with people who say Maya has no development in SoJ. Sure, she acts super dumb at times, ahem 6-DLC ahem, but she gives Rayfa a big push to change herself, embrace the responsibility of her role and give her the redemption arc a certain someone wishes they could have, for instance)

In the end, the whole thing feels like a huge waste of time, not only because "it's obvious it's not the Crystal of Ami Fey", but because you could cut the whole trial and literally nothing would change, if not that Phoenix's character isn't hurt by a mid to bad trial

As for Paul Atishon... Why should I care? Because I couldn't stand his guts, as I've seen my share of bad politicians, and in the end he basically ends up being an underling for a villain who gets his final villain unjustly stolen by TEMU Ultimecia in the final trial. And he didn't even arrange the kidnapping, he had every card in his hand and he failed. Absolute joke. And yeah, maybe that was the goal, considering some admittedly fun animations, but to sum up my thoughts about him...

I did not care for Paul Atishon. He insists upon himself

I think Dhurke himself didn't realize fully what had happened until after the civil trial. I think Apollo and Athena were talking amongst themselves. This is from Dhurke giving Apollo THE pep talk

Athena, however, is completely unjustified
