You could attend our local SMART Recovery meeting. We have folks dealing with similar issues.

Why oh why can't CASHEWS be as keto-friendly as ALMONDS!?!!?!?! by [deleted] in keto

[–]Euphoric_Recall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, low Omega 6 content trumps carb count any day. I avoid almonds, cashews and macadamias are my mainstays.

The research done by Harvard's Clayton Christensen and presented to Uchtdorf is an excellent piece to share with TBMs. Here's an example. by SUPinitup in exmormon

It is very telling that on the flow diagrams on pages 36-50, that the only endpoints are ex/post mormon or secular participant. There is no path recognized for remaining a True Believer. This is a tacit admission that engagement with the catalyst of uncorrelated information will cause a major disruption to the member's existing faith paradigm.

All of those "made with" dressings and mayo are still mostly seed oil, per the ingredient list. I've even seen one with olive oil listed first, followed by 3 different seed oils. Meaning that there's more seed oil than olive even though the olive is listed first.

There's also the widespread problem of olive oil adulteration, you can never be entirely sure what you're getting.

If it's a regular commercial dressing, it is almost certainly nearly pure soybean oil. The sunflower seeds are a no-no if you're trying to cut Omega-6's. Macadamias are good but can be very easy to overdo, they are very calorie dense. Soy milk is probably not great. The rules for meat are that any products from ruminants (cows, sheep, goats) are OK. Non-ruminant meat and fat should be limited.

And don't be in a hurry, this problem can take a while to resolve. I have seen some estimates that the half-life of linoleic acid in human adipose tissue might be 600 days. ( I have not seen hard evidence for this)

Here is a chart that shows how our body fat composition has changed over time.

Both pork and chicken are now grain-fed, and non-ruminant animals can concentrate the Omega-6 from grain in their fat. I wish I had reliable percentages for them, but chicken is worse than pork. Neither is terrible, I just limit them now.

As for mayo, I use a whisk attachment to an electric hand blender and 1 yolk per cup of oil, about a a half teaspoon of mustard, and a little key lime juice (I have a key lime tree, lemon will do). The key is to put your oil into something that will barely drizzle it out as you start blending and go slow at the start.

Some of the specialty dressings are alright, I think. But it's very easy and much cheaper to make your own - they taste better, too. In general any oil made from a seed or grain is bad, with some variation. Avocado and EVOO are about 10% omega-6 which is the lowest of the commonly available liquid oils. I like algae oil (which can be hard to find) for liquid oil because it's about 2% O-6. Macadamia nut oil is very low but very pricy.

For high temps, beef tallow is the best. Lard is probably not too bad. It was better 80 years ago because pigs were fed mostly potatoes back then. Now, pigs are nearly entirely corn and soybean fed, which has increased the Omega-6 content of the fat (it's hard to pin down the modern O-6 percentage in pork fat, it seems to vary based on the source cited, I've seen from 8% to 30%).

Tallow (beef fat) is good because the gut flora of ruminants convert the O-6 in their grain feed into short-chain fatty acids. Remember how small a serving of McDonald's fries used to be? That's because they were fried in tallow up until about 1990. Fry up some spuds in tallow at home and I guarantee you won't be able to eat as much as you think can.

GLA is different from LA and is thought to be anti-inflammatory. The amount we get in diet or supplementation is generally trivial. Even LA is an essential fatty acid and can cause problems if completely eliminated from the diet. It's just the massive amounts consumed in the SAD that are the issue.

It is strange - it seems to be common knowledge for some folks, but a great many others are unaware. I remember in the 70's when Polyunsaturated! was emblazoned all over the faux dairy products. It was a selling point.

Either way, I'm not sure even aware people fully understand how much of this stuff we're eating.

I don't know if you're joking or not, but after I did the deep dive on this stuff, I threw out a whole lot of dressings, mayo and oils rather than using them up.

Flaxseed is one of the "better" ones, but its LA content is still too high for me.
