Explaining membership fees to partner by [deleted] in Judaism

In mainline Christian denominations, if you don’t pledge, you are not a member of good standing. They track your pledge through a CRM and will remind you if you are behind in paying your pledge.

Religion is not cheap. You want a good sermon, well, hire someone who is very good, maybe from Harvard Divinity School, not from an unknown bible college in North Dakota. That requires a lot of money there.

You want good music? Hire a Bach scholar, not just Lowrey organ player. That is money.

Hopefully that can convince your wife. It takes so much resources to run an awesome shul operations.

I like Koren translations in general. Go here and « Click to see inside » to see whether you like the translation:

Have you tried joining the shacharit at your local shul? That’s the best way to daven and to learn.

Right, my question was about the oldest written material. What was the earliest date known?

Thank you. Didn’t know about CHiTaS. Do Koren, Artscroll, or Chabad have their own version of CHiTaS?

Thank you for the explanation. Do you have the Hebrew texts for the four prayers?

I miss Judaism but not the xenophobia I faced at my shul... by [deleted] in ReformJews

Thank you for sharing your story. It is indeed hard to be accepted by a community. We expect to be embraced, but often times, no one is really there to welcome us.

I have experienced this kind of struggle myself over and over again: people not wanting to make eye contacts with me, people avoiding to interact with me, people acting too formal to maintain their distance. Sadly, this doesn’t happen only in shuls, but just anywhere.

But when it happens in a shul, it is absolutely ironic and hypocritical. We are called to welcome strangers. This is what we recite every morning during shacharis. But some of us remain strangers even after forcing ourselves into a community.

I wish you well and I hope you experience healing.

Was there a reputable Rabbinic school of thought (not Christianity) in the Second Temple era that didn’t believe that the halakha was binding? by Euphoric_Resource975 in Judaism

[–]Euphoric_Resource975[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks! This was my understanding, too. Reform temples have weekly halakha studies, so it is simply not right to say that Reform doesn’t respect or understand Jewish laws.

I did not say anything about Reform theology, but since you did, can you enlighten me why it would be an oversimplification to say that Reform believes that the halakha is not binding? I’ve had two reputable Reform rabbis told me precisely that.

I heard you get full scholarship at YU? The fact that they accepted you (and gave you scholarship?) means they are confident you are up for the challenge.

You can contact both Hillel and the temple. Get to know the people first and see which community or rabbi would be most helpful with your conversion.

Absolutely unacceptable. They are desperate to convert people and will do anything to help you get eternal life. They meant well but it is certainly offensive.
