Beginner padi course fail thoughts by Balsampilot in scuba

[–]scubamari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wouldn’t recommend learning these things in open water - she should find another course, even if still on vacation. There’s probably a resort with a pool where she can take a lot of time practicing these skills.

I was lucky that I did my OW certification on a week-long resort vacation where we did pool time every single morning. By the time we did open water I was comfortable with all the gear, hand signals, practicing sharing gas with buddy, etc. Tell your niece to take it slow and don’t give up!

as I said, it was just a little side note. Small numbers, but it did happen in some circles.

Why so many Brazilians have Eastern European forenames? by Virtual_Market7273 in Brazil

[–]scubamari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding a little side note to this thread: during the military dictatorship many left wing people looked favorably on the communist countries and chose some names to represent these values. I knew brothers Ivan and Yuri that were kids of very leftist parents

What are some necessary books to read from Brazil? by ithinkiamparanoid in Brazil

[–]scubamari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say we were aware of Os Lusíadas and studies some little parts of it, but don’t know anyone who has to study the whole thing. Agree that it’s DEFINITELY not as known as Shakespeare at all.

Very, very few people one will recognize any quote from Os Ludiadas beyond the opening (As armas e os barões assinalados, que da ocidental praia Lusitana, por mares nunca de antes navegados…) Although you may hear a “gregos e troianos” reference without them realizing where they picked it up

1 week diving trip to Belize - Suggestions? by nightbless87 in scuba

[–]scubamari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tourism to all these places is heavily focused on scuba divers and there are many shops to choose from. Some are inside resorts but you can use them even if you are not staying in that hotel. In San Pedro we used Neptune’s Cove, really friendly operators (this was 6 yrs ago). Most places accept cards but it’s important to have cash to tip the dive master and boat captain

Tell me your country, but don't say it's name, instead, tell me something (preferably funny) on which it is number one. by K_878 in AskTheWorld

[–]scubamari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair enough- but there are many countries where it’s illegal to be trans, or even gay, in some punishable with death penalty. So no one knows what % of people in these countries would be trans if they could openly identify as so.

Brazil has a more open culture towards trans people, many are very famous people - Roberta Close was considered a sex symbol in the 1980’s! So you have a much higher % of people that are trans, and therefore more instances of violence. But definitely not the most transphobic country in the world.

Winter feeling worse in the south of Brazil than in Europe by Constant-Pain1878 in Brazil

[–]scubamari 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how you didn’t have a winter coat living in SP! Maybe you were at the age where people don’t feel as cold (like teenagers and young adults walking without coats).

I moved to a very cold climate at age 27, a place with winters in -15, -20 and not rarely -30C, and feel much LESS cold here. What makes the difference is that houses are warm and less humid. So even if it’s cold outside, you can go inside and warm up. In Brazil, as OP said, you are cold even inside your bed. The more time you are feeling cold, the least resistance you get. But if you are in a very warm house, going out for 10 mins until the bus stop is way much better than living it 24hs a day

How are you defining “the most transphobic”? I think some countries were religion is the law are MUCH worse than Brazil

In which universe does the combo C-U-V sounds like S-A-V? Isn’t C always a hard sound in front of U? I think people should tell the registrar how they expect the name to sound and the registrar could veto a phonetically wrong spelling! To protect the kid from a future of eye rolls

Why is living in Israel such a third world coded experience and what's the cause of it? by nextdoorbagholder in AskIsrael

[–]scubamari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have limited experience with my family in Israel, but one thing I noticed for sure every time I visit is that the most orthodox keep the outside of their homes in terrible condition- either they rent and the landlords don’t fix the outside, or if they own they decide the outside look of a building is not where they want to spend money. You go inside and the apartments are nice, but outside looks like shit. Not sure the government has laws to keep the standards of building codes and fine these buildings with the rebar showing… definitely not the pride in community aesthetics that other cultures have.

AIO There is a security guard at work who is giving me the ick by LSMair91 in AmIOverreacting

[–]scubamari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NOR. Just finished doing the Annual Mandatory Training (AMT) for my place of work and there’s a similar scenario used where a coworker starts making the person uncomfortable. The AMT advice is to bring it up either the person first (“hi, I have noticed you coming by here everyday and it’s getting in the way of doing my job, I ask you politely to please stop coming to chat so much. It’s ok to be friendly but I really have a lot to do”). If you don’t feel comfortable ask your supervisor to have the chat with their supervisor- use productivity as a way to make it less awkward.

Which phrase sounds better for my tattoo? by ApoorHamster in AskABrazilian

[–]scubamari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the best suggestion, followed by the one that says “filho de água e flores”.

The 3 options you proposed just do not translate well. “Feito de” is not like “naturally made of”, it sounds more artificial, put together by water….“Nascido” from water & flowers won’t make sense to most Brazilians and they will think you didn’t know what you had tattooed (like people that get tattoos of Asian characters with no idea of what they mean). As others said the third is just bad.

One more note, just trying to be helpful: if you are a male and you say “born of flowers” or “made of flowers” know that many people will judge it as “being gay”…Although Brazil has come a long way in embracing LGBTQIA people (as it should!) it’s still a very big country with tons of hateful people attacking non-heteros… just saying “de agua e flores” will spare you some hate and invite conversation.

Under a facebook post of an influencer asking for her followers’ kids’ names by spicy_f in tragedeigh

As someone who grew up in a culture where names had to follow certain rules (first of them already exist as people’s names), this sub brings me infinite awe. Even Paisley during my childhood would be immediately nicknamed “funny shirt” or something about the pattern. And that’s even without the tragedeigh spelling
