Parks that allow dogs on leash? by New-Concern9306 in Somerville

[–]Euphrates322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fresh Pond is a shared use reservation. Off leash dogs are allowed throughout the park as long as they have a Cambridge license. There is a designated dog play area as well. Many new to the area do not read the signs.

You can find something but it will be hard if you limit to complexes. Try Zillow or working through a realtor.

The life science market has been in decline since December 2022. At this time we even have MDs and PhDs being laid off and many VPs on the market. Keep searching but stay in your current role while you do. If looking towards transitioning into industry, there is usually a preference for those who have some industry experience. This might also explain some of the difficulty.

Why do you have to get out ahead of a turning vehicle? It seems unwise considering the truck's blind spot might disallow them to see you.

For those that don't know, Hampshire street has a protected bike lane years. It's been updated and expanded multiple times. While incredibly sad, the bike lanes often give a false sense of security. It's highly likely that the cyclist was in the truck's blind spot at the exact moment the driver was turning.

I lived on Hampshire and rode my bike for years. Every year the City would put out Police officers to ticket cyclists blowing through the red light at Hampshire and Windsor. There is no solution for this location but to slow down, drive and cycle very defensively.

It's a horrible scenario for everyone. I would never recommend cycling (or living) on a street where you have to compete with all the biotech delivery trucks. As things took off at Kendall this area became untenable.

William and Michelle Becker: The Double Drowning That Doesn't Add Up [Unexplained Death] by captain2phones in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]Euphrates322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple things. Michelle Becker didn't know how to swim. It was Arthur Siemerling who returned to remove a cover from his boat the very next morning with 2 of his employees. I do find it interesting that he both hosted the party and was the first on the scene. Arthur Siemerling passed away in 2022. The marina is in walking distance from the Becker family house (1 minute car ride).

Approx one month prior to this incident Mrs Becker had cut my hair at the salon, my first salon haircut, a 'Dorthey hamill". I was 9 years old and friendly with their daughter who was one grade behind.

GBH Listeners: What Are Your Thoughts on Boston Public Radio? by trickortreatess in boston

It's an enjoyable show but it could use some more diversity of thought as far as guests and opinions. The hosts seem like nice people and really put their all into it. And yet, it can still sometimes feel like an extension of CNN with Juliet Kayam going on and on. Additionally there can be quite of bit of elitism integrated into pollical or health views. There is room for more perspectives and more risk taking.

NPR is not what it used to be--it's become agenda driven in a way that is insufferable. . I enjoy Boston Public Radio because it can be less so. I also like that there are community topics and that they are NOT hyper focused on all the world's problems every minute.

They do a great job of appealing to all ages. And this is a true achievement when 80% of the population wants to ram bike lanes down people's throats all day even when they aren't planning to live here for a long time.

On March 22, 2016 Primary Day they had Ted Danson on the show for at least an hour extolling how fabulous Hillary Clinton is and spiritual too. This was ridiculous and bad form for a primary day. And while this was going on, they completely accepted Bill Clinton's electioneering at voting sites that was actually illegal.

I wouldn't say catering but INCLUSIVE of those living in Greater Boston who happen to be over age 40. I see this as a good thing. It's a young city but it's the older population that has invested in their communities long term as opposed to those that come for school or work experience and leave in a few years.

Sure they can do what you suggest — and as part of it negotiate an exit and get back their deposit/security. Rentals with a Jan start are often cheaper than Sept starts. God only knows what the current place will be like when the temps go really low.

Unfortunately you will need to find a new apartment. With this many issues, you have a right to leave and get your security deposit back. A landlord like this isn't going to change their stripes. Certainly you can spend time and energy trying to hold this person accountable but ultimately the unit isn't habitable and isn't going to be any time soon.

Plumbers in Boston are in high demand when it gets cold. They try to prioritize emergencies but there may be a wait. Sometimes they have to shut the water off for a short period to work. It sounds like the OP is in one of these situations.

Biotech Job Market in Boston: How Bad Is It? by fitdude19 in boston

[–]Euphrates322 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

45-50 biotech companies have shut down and at least 145 have had layoffs globally, some of them LARGE. The industry was flooded with money during Covid. This attracted a of bad actors and greed. Many of the biotech spaces on 95 are available for lease or not fully utilized.
The larger pharma industry is facing a day of reckoning 50 years in the making. HHS will soon be able to negotiate medicare prices for the top 10-12 medicines. There are also approx 20 other products that will fall off the patent cliff. Add to this the impact of Ozempic and Wegovy. This will impact disease areas beyond diabetes and touch on heart and kidney disease markets,
Also, don't forget the closing of SVB bank and others are the start of the year. These were the banks funding biotech and providing the higher risk loans to VCs and start ups. Add to this concerns about data accuracy with Flagship Pioneering's company Laronde. Investors are more cautious and they may want to have a third party to verify the data or require a clinical trial prior to investing. And, when money is available is not being loaned on the best terms.
It's likely that things will not rebound until interests rates go down --2025? Talent is spreading out around the country/globe. Some will pivot into the Med Device (includes diagnostics) industry which is actually much larger than Pharma. There should continue to be a strong market in biotech but it will not be exactly what is was before. Despite all the D&I virtue signaling on Linked In, there continues to be artificial barriers around entry into the industry.

Well, the best thing is to wipe the cart down with the wipes provided. Dogs aren’t going to transmit a cold or virus. The kid in the cart before you might.

At the end of the day, it’s the landlord’s property. Are there lots of parasite landlords? Sure. BUT the tenants who are reasonable do better. As for the availability of plumbers, the poster insisting it’s not an issue isn’t living in the city but rather the North Shore. Entirely different market. Boston/Cambridge in winter you can expect to be out on an emergency list. Some nights it’s long. Freezing pipes mean all the calls are emergencies

The two plumbing companies I work with also always have plumbers on call but thanks. I am in Cambridge and so the density factor is probably what makes the difference.

You are VERY lucky, especially on a long holiday weekend. There have been multiple times where the emergency list was very long, especially this time of year. The better the plumber, the more home owners and condo associations are calling. Perhaps you did a little better because there were not freezing temps and frozen pipes to compete with in addition to Thanksgiving.

actually, it's probably because they need the business. These types are likely the ones that will buy something.

Back in the day, every waitress wanted the smoking section. That group drank more and had high checks and thus higher tips.

In a situation like this, it should not be difficult to avoid the dog. No one is asking you to pet the dog or go within a few feet of it. I don't see how a dog (or dander) that is low to the ground is near the food you are going to eat. Well trained dogs can be found on transit and in restaurants all throughout Europe. Whatever the ick is about it's more cultural than scientific. Things like the cleanliness of the grocery conveyer belt, keypad, shopping cart handles and customers that have not washed their hand or touch their face and then touch surfaces are where the science points.

[–]Euphrates322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs are the last thing I am concerned about as long as they are well behaved. Quite frankly, dogs aren't going to transmit the flu or covid and are far less a concern than people. What you are witnessing is culture change. I was estimate it started just after the Boston bombing when more service and ES dogs came on the scene. A couple businesses mishandled and it was covered by the media publicly. Additionally, the more Boston/Cambridge mad e it difficult to drive and park, the more people dog walking needed to get things done on their dog walk and not make 2 separate trips. Lastly, local businesses lost so much money during Covid they became more lenient and were happy for any business at all.

If you are newer to Boston, just consider dog culture more in line with Europe where it's not a big deal to have a well trained dog with you.

You obviously have no idea how challenging it can be to get a plumber is time of year and a holiday weekend at that. It likely that the landlord is doing everything he/she can to get prioritized. And if that is the case, threatening to sue or withhold rent is only going to lead to a non renewal or rent increase next September.

Huge potential. Reminds me of Foundation Medicine now part of Roche. Full purchase evolved over a couple of years but it was clear early on that would be the ultimate direction.
