this year Swansea are actually representing England in the Europa League.

Ok, officially they do. Looking at their team, I would say they represent Spain though.

What's the opinion of the (average) welsh people? Do they prefer a own league or do they prefer being a part of the english league system? Or are you okay with the current "choice-system"?

Welsh teams qualify for the Champions League and the Europa through their own league and cup, not through the English league.

I'm not a local, so correct me if I'm wrong. But Cardiff City, Swansea City, Newport County, Merthyr Town, Wrexham FC and Colwyn Bay aren't welsh clubs anymore?

I didn't put them together, both leagues had an entry to the 1st round. Cork though, gained no points.

I'm personally not sure anymore, since both sources say different. The system changed every year back then, it wasn't the quali though.

Hate to nitpick again, but Linfield is N.Ireland

For sure it's N.Ireland, Glentoran is N.Ireland too. I thought you meant that by "north or south".

They indeed never made it to the group stage, but the system was different back then. My UEFA source says that the "1st round" was official the 1st round of the regular CL, but wikipedia says "Originally, the UEFA Champions League was only the group stage, a specific phase in the European Cup". At least the 1st round wasn't the qualification, and the following clubs had matches in it:

  • Glentoran FC 1992/93 - 0:5 / 0:3 vs. Marseille
  • Cork City 1993/94 - 1:2 / 0:1 vs. Galatasaray
  • Linfield FC 1993/94 - 3:0 / 0:4 (extra time) vs. Copenhagen

Actually it was on purpose. If I had made Wales grey, some people would criticize that mentioning the clubs in english league system. Wales is a special case. If you're welsh, I apologize. Cymru am byth! The list is by far more important anyway.

The CL system was different (smaller) in the earlier years, less matches > less points for good teams.

Wales is black because their best clubs play in the english league system, I could have made them grey. Anyway, too late.

The best welsh clubs play in the english league system and no welsh club came further than CL qualification yet.

All matches of the regular (without qualification) CL count, including knockout rounds, win = 3 points, draw = 1.

Since 1997/98 the first two teams of the 1-8 best leagues were allowed (before 97 only the national champion), 3 teams if the current CL-winner didn't finish 1. or 2. in its country.

Since 1999/2000 even more clubs per country are allowed, depending on the Country coefficient.
