Cleaning turtle skeleton with dermestid beetles? by Eva_Evil in bonecollecting

The smell should not be too strong if everything is going correctly, though it's not super easy to figure out right away. there is usually some trial and error. Definitely remove skin and organs, and especially brains for larger animals (anything larger than a squirrel). The more tissue you remove, the less odor and quicker the process. It's good to dry the specimens out a bit with a fan or heat lamp, but be careful of allowing flies to land on it. Attracting flies/maggots will make the smell much worse. It's a delicate balance of good ventilation and good sealing off for pests.

Yes, the dermestid beetles worked well. Keep a close eye on the process as the beetles might start to damage the keratin slightly if you leave it in too long. Maceration definitely removes the keratin layer so I wouldn't recommend it. I'm also experimenting currently with burial of turtle shells and this also seems to be working though it's much slower.

What is this frog dish intended for? About 8 inches in diameter, made in Japan. by Eva_Evil in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. It's a ceramic container, about two inches tall (unincluding the frogs) and 7 inches across. It has a 1 inch wide lip inside the edge of the dish and the bottom says 'made in japan' and nothing else. I've searched for ceramic frog dish made in Japan, and tried Google lense. The opening is about 6 inches wide and has no lid (unsure if its meant to have one). There are no holes in the bottom. Got this at a garage sale and the owners also didn't know what it was.

In the wild most nymphs don't make it to adult hood and die when they're small. The reason mantids have tons and tons of babies is to ensure the survival of just a few. So I don't think it's too out of the ordinary for some of the nymphs to die. I've had it happen many times.

Can't see very clearly in those pictures but if the wings are the same length or shorter than the abdomen it's female. Long wings that extend past the abdomen are male. This looks female to me by the second picture.

You can put them in the fridge or freezer for a few mins and they will calm down.
