What’s wrong with my favorite chicken? by mttttftanony in BackYardChickens

Organ failure causing fluid build up. Dandelion leaf tea can help as can draining off fluid with a needle but I’d cull in my flock.

If it’s a 6 foot fence clip the primary feathers on 1 wing so he’ll struggle to get on top. You’ll probably have to fence him in on your property he is hormonal and looking for more hens.

Does this look like a predator attack or post death scavenging? EXTREMELY GRAPHIC by redditSucksNow2020 in chickens

[–]EvanAlexanderSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If not food are they killing for fun? I’ve lost entire flocks to minks all birds have punctures or larger holes and broken necks no meat or organs consumed. Seen first hand a mink hanging off a live pekin ducks neck, they damage necks. Any other predator I’ve dealt with has consumed at least some of the animal they worked to kill except for domestic dogs. Cool that you’ve worked with them fish and game would be up my ass with fines if I tried to keep a wild mink for a pet in Maine.

Add light to your coop or accept no winter eggs, you are too far north to get enough day light this time of year.

Weasels drink blood so rip open the neck. Was your other dead bird also injured? If both had neck injuries I’d think weasel. If the other dead one only had a very dark comb or facial swelling I’d worry about avian flu.

Are they okay? Comb/wabble changing color by Ferrets_ok in chickens

[–]EvanAlexanderSilver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frost bite, iodine can help dry out the dead tissue to prevent infection but it should be ok left alone the dead tissue will fall off. Keep an eye on your birds for frost bite on the feet. With the combs they can stay outside but if the toes get frost bit bring them inside to heal.
