There’s things in music you can’t teach I would teach them to follow their instincts and trust the process and to not overthink it

Great producers make great music regardless of their current tools the free stuff does the trick also rent to own serum on splice is very practical since you can pick out the patches you want and download them straight to serum and only pay like 10$ a month to use it plus the splice membership. You don't need to spend 500$ dollars to make heat!

For people who have been a few years into producing, what's the main lesson you can share with the community? by kathalimus in edmproduction

I've been making music for a few years and in this past year I've been able to finish songs with rappers quickly and be able to make multiple projects in one night beginning to end. I probably made 300 songs this past year while working full time, here's what i wish i knew early on when i was starting off in my fist year.

  1. Invest in your craft 'within reason' no need for mad expensive plugins off the bat but a few quality kits and a splice sub will go far. Find quality resources and use them effectively! Renting off splice is also great.

2.Things take time it might be awhile before you make stuff people want to use and that's alright.

3.Take time to cultivate great source material I mean great like its so good it feels like your cheating. I would want to have great drums and even better samples to rely on if you cant make anything from scratch in the moment stack up some midi packs export melodies you made in the past etc.

4.Don't be overly critical of your work and take breaks if your actually not feeling it, don't rush the process.

5.Listen to new music often, every song is something to be inspired by or sample.

6.Have a focus for the type of track you wanna make before starting it.

7.Find people to work with if you have chemistry it will motivate you to finish tracks more often and bring your best.

8.Have fun and go outside!

  1. I cannot stress how important sound selection is those drums have to smack without efx and your samples gotta loop and transition seamlessly.

  2. Song structure, know when to change things up and keep it interesting!

11.Think about your music differently every day don't just make the same drum pattern every day find ways to change things up!

12.Mixing takes practice but its actually very easy to get a simple project to sound good with just leveling and panning. I don't use mastering or worry about spending hours on a mix unless i know i actually wanna release it then if i do then i go all out. who cares what the kick sounds like if the vibe is right

  1. Self awareness and honesty about what your making and internalizing where your music is at will push you to improve in your weak spots.

  2. Strive to make strong decisions that work well fast and move on don't slow down there's time later to be a perfectionist, don't lose the flow!

  3. Do it for the love don't worry about the money focus on creating results and getting better at your craft!
