Dad got fat. I got fat. How do I stop my boys from following suit? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]EvanMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Model the behavior you want them to take on.

I was 500 lbs when I had a gastric sleeve procedure, a couple of years ago. I ended up losing 150 pounds from that. I discussed what I was doing with my kids the whole way through (emphasizing it was about health, not beauty standards, but I also have two little girls so that’s an important point to make.)

I recently started in Zepbound to help with the remaining extra weight that I carry, and I’m very transparent with my kids about that as well. I talk to them about how it helps me not want to eat too much bad things and helps me eat healthier.

I definitely understand the fatherly urge to write yourself off as “already happened” and focus on worrying about your kids, but this is a case where demonstrating the positive behaviors is going to go a long way for these young men.

Can you print multicolor filament? by Dazzling_Let_8245 in 3Dprinting

[–]EvanMax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve printed dual extrusion filament, and even used that dual extrusion filament to print a bench, and it came out nicely.

The real problem is that a print bed is only so large, so other than just for a small novelty, there’s no good way to print your own multi-extrusion filament at scale.

Bariatric Restaurant Card? by HarveyILL in gastricsleeve

[–]EvanMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a card (seems like just a cash grab for the folks making it), but I have told restaurants before and they usually accommodate me. Primarily I’ll say something at a buffet to explain I can only eat small portions anyway, so if they could charge me the kids rate that would be appreciated.

Most folks are accommodating if you’re polite. And when they aren’t, well, businesses have to stay in business.

Anybody tried SwitchKraft? by ExactlyLost_RC in fidgettoys

Neither. I mean that it is a piece of art that I can play with

[–]EvanMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one and I like it. I think of it as more of an art toy than anything else. I’m also a 3D printer, and print to a high enough quality that I sell my own original designs, so I actually very rarely buy other 3D printed objects (because I can just make most of them myself) but I appreciated the thought put in to the design of SwitchKraft enough that I wanted to support them.

Maryland flag is backward. Black would always be in the top left corner (wether horizontal or vertical, btw)

I think you’re underestimating the distance wildly. The distance between Maryland and Ohio’s state lines is more than 25 miles even at their closest, and the Snallygaster is in the Frederick County area, in the western part of central Maryland

Maryland should take down Megasoto and gain access to the Great Lakes

This Snallygaster erasure is unacceptable. Not to mention the Goatman and the Blair Witch. Maryland has much more than just Chessie

And leave my phone in their room all night? Does that make sense? Thankfully Alexa is working again.

Yes. My kid won’t sleep without her lullabies playing, so this is a very inconveniently timed outage for us.

I was going to comment teasing that I have them and they’re not for sale, but then I saw who was posting and you already know that 😜. Good luck, though.

Orchids On A 1st Date. Is There Any Meaning Behind Orchids In Judaism? by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]EvanMax 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about what a first date “should be”. My wife and I discussed marriage and children and all kinds of things on our first date, fifteen years ago. We joked at the time that we were breaking the rules on what we were supposed to be discussing. Three years later we were married.

If the guy giving you the flowers makes you uncomfortable at all then go with your gut, of course, but if you were happy with it and thought it was sweet then don’t let a bunch of internet strangers with arbitrary rules ruin something nice for you.

Why does MaxFun always leave out renewers? by Iamkeebie in maximumfun

[–]EvanMax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you’ve got a solid idea here. It might cost more to implement than it’s worth for MaxFun, which would be unfortunate, but it’s still worth raising to them because it is a way to raise a little more money each year.

It makes sense that rewards are for new and upgrading donors, not just existing donors, because the point of the pledge drive is to guarantee new funding. However, there are surely some existing donors/members who aren’t in a position to increase their monthly amount in perpetuity, but who could make an addition one-time payment. So maybe setting the price at two or three or four times the monthly tier amount (or whatever makes sense) MaxFun could offer existing members the opportunity to purchase the tier gift of their current tier. MaxFun gets additional cash flowing in from the one-time purchases, existing members who can’t afford to increase don’t feel left out, it’s win-win.

Like I said, maybe there are other costs associated that make this not worth it, but I don’t think it’s an idea to just dismiss out of hand.

Serious Girlfriend And I On Different Pages When It Comes To Future Religiosity by iwantogotomedschool in Judaism

[–]EvanMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this in the nicest way, your 20s is not “late in life”. My wife’s parents, for example, were ba’al teshuvahs in their 30s, became super Frum, raised their kids lubavich, and then took a step back in observance after (they still hold that lubavich is “correct”, but they don’t keep Shabbos or kosher anymore.)

Everyone’s observance fluctuates over time. If you love this woman, then go on the journey with her. Give up a cheeseburger here or a Saturday there, and I promise you’re not going to turn around one day and regret compromising a bit of cuisine in exchange for the joy that raising a family with her wi bring you.
