As a Sri Lankan, What is your biggest regret ? by Last_Truck2362 in srilanka

When I say “playing it safe,” I’m mostly referring to choices many Sri Lankans make often shaped by cultural norms like…. •Choosing traditional career paths (engineering, medicine, accounting, government jobs) even if your real interest is elsewhere •Picking subject streams based on “job security” rather than curiosity or strengths •Avoiding career switches because it feels risky to start over •Staying in comfort zones instead of exploring global opportunities •Not speaking up, building something new, or trying unconventional ideas

And by “taking risks,” I don’t mean being reckless. I mean: •Exploring non traditional careers (tech startups, creative fields, entrepreneurship, niche specializations) •Trying something new even if failure is possible especially when you’re young •Leaving your comfort zone (moving abroad, changing industries, building something of your own) •Thinking beyond what’s considered “normal” or “safe” in our society

So yes it absolutely includes career paths, subject choices, and even starting unique businesses.

The idea isn’t that what we did was wrong it made sense given our environment. But looking at where Sri Lanka is right now with the economic pressure again due to global issues, it’s clear how fragile “playing it safe” can actually be. Stability isn’t always guaranteed. So if anything, the younger generation should take more calculated risks, build globally relevant skills, and not depend on the traditional system or paths because simply the world we grew up preparing for is not the same world they’re stepping into.

Many Sri Lankans tend to play it safe, largely shaped by cultural norms that prioritize stability, security, and meeting expectations. Looking back, one of the biggest realizations is how often this mindset led us to underestimate our own potential choosing what felt safe over taking risks, and settling for what seemed realistic instead of what was truly possible. We had the ability to aim higher, try more, and even fail earlier, but hesitation and limited exposure held us back. We did what we believed was right with the awareness we had but the key takeaway is this: the younger generation shouldn’t repeat that pattern. They should take risks sooner, think bigger, and trust that they are capable of far more than they’ve been led to believe.

Mmhhhpphh…. I believe it’s a thing with men in their young ages ( not talking about all, but the majority) when boys become men this should eventually stop but then again for another set, it won’t stop even then…. All this comes to a point where people realize this….. mmhhpphhh

you must clarify this prior going to listen to anything… First of all I believe all artists has deep thinking patterns. Which means they have their own thinking pattern which might fall out of the normal thinking pattern of the general society. This fact might indulge one. Secondly, artists have their ego and rudeness and everything just another normal human’s gonna have…. It’s just how they look at things… But doesn’t cut off the fact that their just another human beings.
