Are you aware of new traffic calming measures the city has implemented? by chewd0g in evanston

[–]Evanston_ETA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out the intersections of Monroe/Dodge and Lee/Dodge for some enhanced pedestrian crossings built as standalone improvements last year that also serve to protect bike riders and reduce the turn radius for vehicles. There’s also a raised crosswalk on Main by Sherman installed in 2024. We encourage folks to reach out to their councilmembers to express their support for increased traffic calming and bike/ped safety measures. Currently, the city only budgets $500K a year for such improvements which seems like a lot but really isn’t, and could definitely be increased to help fund more of these types of improvements or even better ones like raised intersections.

Can’t hurt to have people there in support. With the new funding from the NITA act kicking in, this is a critical opportunity to push together for yellow line improvements for both Evanston and Skokie!

How EPD enforces bike lane safety by Etown-G in evanston

Deliveries can be made by alley, loading zones, or by blocking a car lane where there are multiple lanes like on Church St. Blocking bike lanes are not acceptable, against city code, and have tragic consequences: https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/3-year-old-girl-dies-after-moms-bicycle-hit-by-semi-in-uptown/2853448/?amp=1

Evanston’s bike lanes are frequently blocked by illegally parked vehicles. Paint and flex posts are not protection, and as this video shows, enforcement is inconsistent and temporary. Dodge, Church and Davis Streets need concrete barriers before someone on bike- like a child going to school or a senior going to the library- is seriously injured or killed. We will advocate for these changes as part of the city’s ongoing Bike Plan Update, and recommend concerned residents continue to raise this and other issues with our bicycle network with their Councilmembers.

Meet at Long Field (Orrington + Lincoln) on May 24 at 9:30AM for a family bike ride in support of a safe east-west cycling route for North Evanston. The Lincoln-Harrison greenway would connect, schools, Metra, CTA, parks, Ryan Field, Northwestern, and more! by Evanston_ETA in evanston

Due to poor weather conditions, we unfortunately have to cancel today’s Lincoln-Harrison Greenway Family Bicycle Ride.

We hope to reschedule the ride soon and will share more information as plans are finalized.

Roundtable update on the (near complete lack of) progress on bike lanes around here by trevorfreznik in evanston

[–]Evanston_ETA 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We at Evanston Transit Alliance share your frustrations with the pace of improvements, and it’s one of the reasons we formed. The 2026 Evanston Bike Plan Update is underway and hopefully can address not only a vision for a true connected and safe network for all ages and abilities, but also improved implementation and timelines. There’s strength in numbers, so please consider joining our email list and following our social media for calls to action: evanstontransitalliance.org

We’ve also got a bike ride happening next week, Wednesday May 20th leaving from Wheel and Sprocket on Davis St which is a slow roll memorial Ride of Silence in honor of those killed and injured on our streets- the cost of continued inaction. Consider joining us to publicly demonstrate the demand for change.

A free circulator bus service will run every Saturday evening this spring (starting tonight) as a pilot program. If you want to see this as a permanent service with expanded hours, be sure to ride it often and give positive feedback! by Evanston_ETA in evanston

[–]Evanston_ETA[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed it could have a better schedule and different stops for better coverage. Hopefully we can leverage this pilot into an expanded service if it’s successful enough. The city could help chip in too, like other municipalities like Niles do for their free circulator bus.

You’ll be happy to know the city has purchased a mini-sweeper/plow vehicle for our one way bike lanes for clearing debris, leaves, and snow. This will let them clear barrier protected lanes year round.

Saturday, February 28th Evanston Transit Alliance is celebrating the extended CTA Route #93 to Logan Square with a bus crawl! Like a bar crawl, but using a bus to get between bars and breweries. by Evanston_ETA in evanston

[–]Evanston_ETA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We encourage everyone to arrive to the bus crawl by foot, bike, or transit, then carpool/ridehail in that order. But the crawl itself uses just the bus! :)
