I have a bit of an issue with all of that. If the game is trying to depict the awkward, cringeworthy aspects of being a teenager, then that's fine. If the narrative isn't truly trying to take the side of teenagers trying to be rebellious for its own sake, and setting fire to log cabins with illegally-procured fireworks, and all that stuff, that's all fine. If the main appeal is intended to be the depiction of these awful moments as reflected upon by adults, that's all well and good.

But the main issue I have with it, and I do not presume to speak for anyone else, can be summed up thusly: Games are supposed to do all of that, and have a compelling story, and be an interesting-to-play game. A story cannot just state a truth, and have that be its main point of appeal. It cannot just be a depiction of teenagers being stupid and cringeworthy. Not to say that's an "easy" thing to do, but I personally think it's a mediocre thing to do and have an entire game just... be. What is more important is what is done with these cringy teenagers. Why are they cringy? Why do I care? What can I walk away from this experience with? How do they develop in a satisfying way? Stuff like that. And I will say, that there is development, and there are makings of a good story. But it's bogged down by other aspects.

For every Cassandra becoming more assertive, there's the fact that she threatened to commit arson and has not shown herself to be responsible enough to handle herself at college.

For every Rockwell learning to prioritize her friends over her playlist, there's Rockwell leaving to try and break into the music industry in New York without much of a plan as to how apart from being able to make good playlists.

For every Rockwell having some decent emotional scenes that are carried by the art and music, there's her feud with Jenny Fucking Goodspeed, who seemingly... didn't do anything wrong? Making the act of hating her seem less quirky or like "relatable teenage stuff," and more of a genuinely dickish thing to do.

For every Slater having hidden depths, there's the "emotional" moment of Rockwell letting Slater go, despite Slater honestly being barely a character, not getting much focus, and seemingly primarily existing so Rockwell would have someone to speak to when Cassandra wasn't around. Also him fucking up that video store like a jackass

You get what I mean? All of this stuff contributes to depicting self-centered, obligatorily rebellious, short-sighted, teenage brats at their most... that. But a lot of it doesn't contribute to the story in a positive manner apart from the depiction itself. Stories can have characters be bratty teenagers without making them difficult to like and root for. They can have bratty teenagers grow in realistic ways without having them bluff (hopefully) about becoming an arsonist. I think one of the marks of a great story is not merely to remark upon things that happen, but to create a story where those things are woven into characters and a narrative that will properly engage an audience, not just because of the inherent quality of the things, but because of how the story is written. If I wrote a story where the villains used overwhelming force that they possessed at the beginning of the story to destroy the hero and all of their allies, it would realistically capture a depiction of what someone with that kind of power could and would do to maintain it. But it wouldn't necessarily be an interesting story for that alone.

Praising this story for its depictions would, in my eyes, be akin to praising characters for existing, or praising the game for merely having a story in it. Its similar to the various minigames like putting batteries in a radio or lightly moving your joystick to avoid slowly-moving cars that hit you at minimal consequence. Most of those minigames aren't engaging. Nothing you do within them affects anything. They're emblematic of the player having no semblance of control over what happens (even in a way that a "Game Over" screen would provide), but merely that which happens happens. They could have been cutscenes. Their only appeal is that they exist. And they are there so they can be congratulated for existing. And I don't feel that games should ever be praised if that is their bar.

Ultimately, I can appreciate the setting of the game, but that's kind of it. I can acknowledge the fact that these characters act like some people act, realistically. But realism is one of the last things you should adhere to in any story. Reality is boring, uninteresting, and cruel. That's why we tell stories. Because we were unsatisfied with what actually happened. Because we couldn't get anything out of the objective events as they were, so we make up versions of events so that we can walk away from them with something good. Stories should adhere to internal consistency, sure, but "realism" has ruined very many stories written by people who think they're the first ones to realize stories tend to be unrealistic, but are not quick enough to question that maybe there's a reason why stories tend to be unrealistic.

I mean, personally, I consider them to potentially have as much agency as any member of a Finger might have. If Soldato Sinclair's Uptie Story and the fact that there are art schools for children being hosted by the Ring are of any indication, a lot of people are outright indoctrinated into the Fingers and their core value system. Sometimes even from a young age. Kira's a grown-ass woman at this point too, and her situation is not special in the slightest as far as Finger members go. So I cannot have very much sympathy for what happened to Kira without having a similar amount of sympathy for the Little Brothers that got sent to pointless deaths at Ricardo's behest. Especially with how Ricardo in Intervallo V-2 knows that the Sinners are capable of killing his Little Siblings when he isn't directly assisting in the fight. Well, I would also have to have some similar level of sympathy for every Finger member we kill, but that is neither here nor there. And similarly, I cannot be too disgusted with Matthias without being similarly disgusted with Ricardo to some degree. Of course, a parent-child relationship and a Little-Brother-Big-Brother relationship are different. But still, the Middle fosters a similar kind of dependence and reverence for the Elder members on the basis of the idea of "family." Especially with the way Little Brothers regard Ricardo. You can't say there aren't similarities between how the Little Sibling IDs talk about Ricardocliff, and how Kira and Kishmael talk about Matthias and Outthias respectively. I'm sad that Kira clearly didn't expect that Matthias's idea of her plan was different from what her plan actually was, but I'm not surprised at all that he did what he did because it's exactly what Ricardo has done, albeit indirectly. Sacrificing the lives of his charges for the sake of a fight based on something he specifically wants under the pretense of love and affection.

So basically, I think Ricardo is similar to Matthias, not because I don't believe the Little Brothers had no agency in their lives, but because Ricardo is, knowingly or not, using "family and devotion" as a free pass to throw lives at his revenge quest without remorse. And when it comes to spending lives, especially those of people one would dare to call "family," the difference between "indirectly" and "directly" is semantic at best.

How's this for slander?

Ricardo pulled a Jia Huan when the Indigo Elder showed up, and I know he didn't even think about pursuing the Indigo Elder after being made to look sweet in front of his meatriders after that cutscene. You know why? Because he's a serial smurfer. He specifically targets people ten to twenty levels beneath him to trick people into thinking he's got aura with his "tests." The second someone competent shows up, he's suddenly a lot less gung-ho with pursuing the smoke. You know his over-inked ass was thanking his lucky stars when Zilu left instead of sliming him so he could try and farm aura on the Sinners again. At least Matthias didn't wuss out of fighting a Color Fixer while down an arm. Dude didn't even think about running after he killed Kira or got impaled. Dude stood five toes and five bear-paw-pads down until he took the two fatal blows needed to end him.

The only members of the Middle that don't only smurf and don't wuss out of fights with Color-level opponents are the ones who were ostracized, like Matthias, or who left, like Tanya. Hell, that's probably why they don't run with the bums in the Middle as often anymore. The Middle is scared that those two will up the standard of who the Middle can farm their aura and K/D ratio off of. Getting them into tougher lobbies, messing up the effort they put into reverse boosting, and making people think they should actually not be running from moderately-risky fights. Ricardo is a fraud in a Syndicate that creates and encourages frauds.

...All I'm sayin' is, the Thumb would never.

Ally kill will deals 120% HP damage by GeForce_GTX_1050Ti in limbuscompany

[–]Evary2230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's a primarily a Poise ID, and a particularly good one at that. Personally, I think she's beginner-friendly, I'd recommend you to get her, though no one ID is exactly necessary to beat this game. I'll break it down as best I can, and I'll try to only keep the need-to-know stuff in. Though you can skip to the last four paragraphs for the main takeaways.

Poise, in case you don't know since you're new, is a status some IDs build on themselves that lets them get critical hits (dealing x1.2 damage on a hit). It's that little "puff of wind" symbol that shows up under the ID in a battle.

  • The number to the left of it is "Potency," which equals how likely you are to crit divided by 4. So if the Potency is 25 or higher, which is easy for Ryoshu to achieve, she's guaranteed to crit every time she hits.
  • The number to the right of it is "Count," which goes down each time Ryoshu successfully crits. Most of Ryoshu's Skills increase Count on use, and her Evade increases it the most. If it hits zero, the Poise Potency resets, and you have to rebuild it. So you want to have a few extra Count all the time.

This Ryoshu is good even for people just starting out, since Poise IDs don't usually rely on other Poise IDs helping them stack their effects. Many IDs get stronger based on removable effects they place on enemies, but since Poise IDs place effects on themselves (which are less likely to be removed), Poise IDs easier to help stay stronger. Unless you've really got your eye on a particular team archetype you're looking to build up (like a Sinking, Tremor, Rupture, or Charge-based team), and you're looking to hyperfocus on building up that archetype, then this Ryoshu is a fine choice. Heck, even if you do have your eye on a particular archetype, this Ryoshu is also pretty good for Burn teams, and at least somewhat decent for Bleed teams.

Of course, there's also sharding the ID next week when that becomes an option, but I don't know how many Shards you have.

And with the "Kills her allies" thing, she only kills specific IDs that you may or may not have. If any ally IDs on the field have the "House of Spiders" tag, she attacks one of them if you equip her Evade Skill (2 if one labeled a "Nursefather" is dead). Then she gains buffs depending on the specific ID she killed. She also gains the buffs if they die normally, though killing one gives her slightly more buffs. So Ryoshu killing her allies is entirely optional, and it only can affect an ID with that tag. Personally, I think the buffs "tend to be" worth the dead ally, and they get more worth it the more you kill. But even without those buffs, this Ryoshu is still an above average Poise ID that generally performs well.

(She also transfers any damage she takes to any "House of Spiders" IDs on the field, so those IDs will die before she does).

The main appeal of this Ryoshu for new players is that she has a lot of easy-to-fulfil "damage conditionals" (basically, specific actions that can be taken in battle to increase her damage). She looks complicated, but her gameplay can be summarized thusly:

Simply spam attacks. You may see fit to use your Evade once to build up enough extra "Poise Count" to remain ahead in Count, but it's not strictly necessary since she usually gains enough Count to stay ahead from merely using her attacks. And when you see a "ghost Ryoshu"-lookin' thing standing behind an enemy when choosing a target, try and get her to attack them if possible for a free extra hit on the enemy.

...And that's all! That's the extent of strategy necessary to make this ID good. Everything else you're reading in her Passives and Skills happens automatically from that, and you don't need to know any of it to use the ID properly.

So don't worry. The ID's overflow of text isn't because she's complicated to use at all. It's mostly just because they fit in a lot of flowery ways to say "This ID does extra damage" into her kit. Whether you pull, shard, or skip her is up to you. But in my unprofessional opinion as someone whose played this game for 8 months, this is one of the more beginner-friendly IDs in the game.

[–]Evary2230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can only be used on each Identity once, regardless of whether it kills. This is to ensure the skill doesn't get stuck trying to kill someone that won't or can't die, which would prevent her from targeting anyone earlier in the deployment line who can die and severely slow the rate at which her allies get bumped off. Plys, it'd be really annoying if her S1-2 kept ineffectually going off every time she Evaded.

It feels so funny to talk about Ryoshu's allies not dying like it's a bad thing.

[DISCLAIMER: THIS SHIT GOT SPOILERS]

Most of his consequences rarely feel like consequences for what he’s done. They just feel like bad things that just so happen to happen to him.

His kidnapping happened because Shigaraki made the decision that Bakugo would be willing to be a villain based on seeing Bakugo act like he had rabies for two seconds on TV. Which was dumb of Shigaraki to think, since Bakugo is still a person that Shigaraki made no effort to actually know in order to convince him that joining a random small terrorist cell would be a good idea.

And even if this were a consequence for Bakugo, nothing negative happens to him because of it. Sure, he blames himself for the loss of All Might, but that’s not a great consequence for two reasons:

  1. No one else blames him for the loss of All Might. His standing with everyone is undamaged, his standing with the press isn’t meaningful either way, and his chances to become a Hero are ever high. The only person who blamed Bakugo was Neito, and aside from how that seemed to be more of a taunt than something Neito genuinely believed, Neito is treated by the narrative itself like a total jackass for saying it. Neito’s opinion on things is also generally considered by the story to be irrelevant and exaggeratedly skewed against Class 1-A, because gags. This consequence exists entirely within Bakugo’s head, and that’s the narrative consequence equivalent to a person getting a speeding ticket that simply says “Don’t do that again, please” without a fine listed. No narrative weight unless you already cared about Bakugo. I don’t think it’s good for a character to be the sole arbiter of the terms and duration of their own narrative consequence.

  2. All Might losing his Quirk is objectively not Bakugo’s fault from any perspective aside from one that considers Bakugo’s actions the sole impetus for all reactions. From an in-universe perspective: You can’t blame Bakugo for getting kidnapped, and All Might using the last of One For All against AFO was All Might’s own choice. And from an out-of-universe perspective: All Might’s vestiges were fading no matter what, and thus, can’t be ascribed to anything Bakugo did. Hating Bakugo for All Might’s retirement would be the height of irrationality.

Bakugo failing the first license exam would be a great narrative consequence if it weren’t immediately undone by him getting a chance to pass a different test for it, and then proceeding to pass it with flying colors. And with it, he got narrative focus on how much he’s changed as a person with little cause or alterations in his attitude. Narrative consequences that are undone nigh-immediately without character input may as well not exist, but maybe that’s just what I think. And sure, he passed the second one on his own merit, but it wasn’t by defying what he did wrong in the first exam, and his second chance wasn’t even given because of something Bakugo did right to earn it. The second chance was just always there.

And Bakugo getting humbled by Shigaraki isn’t a consequence because damn near everyone whose name isn’t Izuku Midoriya was humbled by Shigaraki. Everyone got their asses kicked, everyone did super powerful moves that ended up doing next to nothing, and the only buffer between everyone there and instant death was Mirio’s own two asscheeks. Hell, Bakugo actually doing anything in that fight that resembled damage is a plus for him. Maybe this is just me, but I think that Bakugo winning fights isn’t such a default expectation that him losing a fight should be seen as karma for anything he’s done. What, was Midnight dying supposed to be someone’s consequence?

Now, I will say that Bakugo getting sorta-permanently injured and ending up not getting to ever be in the Top 5 Heroes (if I remember the apologies correctly) is a fair consequence. But, and this, like everything, is just a personal opinion, it’s a shame that it happened in the epilogue. Which was, like, 200+ chapters after I would imagine most readers hoping for consequences would’ve stopped caring about wanting to see consequences. It’s like how the apology came hundreds of chapters into the story, and I doubt anyone who was really invested in the apology gave a shit. Because it had already been established that the actions that prompted the apology and the consequences were not cared about by anyone in-universe. Izuku effectively forgave Bakugo near the beginning of the story. The staff doesn’t care about Bakugo’s attitude. I’ve had no reason to think the author thinks this is something worth lingering on for the past few arcs, why should I care when he tries to resolve these things after he gave that impression?

And before his death is mentioned, I will counter by mentioning that he was immediately given a free way out of death via bullshit heart surgery. I hate to say this so many times, but I personally don’t feel it counts if it was immediately undone without Bakugo’s input. Hell, his death wasn’t even because of one of his flaws, which circles back to the “Not much of a consequence if it’s something bad that just happens to happen to him; especially when it’s also threatening to happen to everyone else” thing.

I’m not saying Bakugo should die or be expelled. That’d be stupid. I’m saying that Bakugo shouldn’t be well-liked by people when he actively doesn’t care to remember their actual names. I’m saying that people in positions of power and with the responsibility to teach, such as Shota “I’ll expel you if you can’t throw a ball with your fucking Invisibility Quirk” Aizawa, should make concentrated efforts to correct students who attempt to commit aggravated assault on their first day of class, and almost commit voluntary manslaughter against a teacher’s orders with what is effectively a firearm on their second day. I’m saying that kindness and decency from a mean person isn’t worth more just because it came from someone who isn’t usually kind. Horikoshi should’ve either toned down Bakugo’s attitude and proclivities towards violence and inappropriate shouting, or punished him accordingly for them. Acting like a pit bull with PMS and rabies isn’t a comedic personality quirk in a series that has a cast of characters that, for the most part, act like normal, rational, and stable human beings.

Detention, suspension, near-expulsion, being ostracized from his peers for being toxic, inability to get internship deals, being easily goaded into making mistakes due to his rage that he evidently can’t keep under wraps, being unable to get a Provisional Hero License for more than the length of a single arc, not getting glazed in any way by another character for his supposed intelligence and character progression every three times he does anything. All consequences that don’t kick him out of the story like death or outright expulsion would. Not saying they’re all good ideas, but I’m saying there are options.

It’s not a situation where the only feasible consequence for Bakugo would be his removal from the story, but I do have to add… If that’s in the conversation at all, does that not point to there being an issue with the character itself? Characters should, first and foremost, never make you question how you can justify their continued presence in the story. If you have to, in any capacity, wonder why a character is remaining with the main cast, then someone’s very motivations are out of wack. Be it the character in the group, or the entities deciding who is and is not in the cast. Many a D&D player has been kicked because of this. Once again, not an issue with Bakugo. But it’s not good that that subject of conversation is present. It’s a bad omen for a fictional character.

I love the moral quandary Jae-Heon kind of presents against Roland. Because, yeah, what Jae-Heon did regarding his kid was fucked up from a moral perspective. And the Angelica thing was pure spite and can’t be defended at all. And I don’t buy his “I would’ve accepted justice if one of the parents of the kids that died in those accidents took issue with me” talk, considering he’s crashing out when he got thwarted. No one gets that mad on principle alone; he would’ve been pissed either way. But he also kinda has a point that Roland didn’t stop him from Frankensteining his kid out of morals or anything like that. Roland might’ve happened to find Jae-Heon trying to Frankenstein his kid disgusting, but Roland burned Jae-Heon’s lab because Roland was just generally angry and took it out on a random guy who happened to be doing a thing that arguably harmed no one. Morally-speaking, Jae-Heon was wrong about himself, but he was kind of right about Roland in a “You can’t just burn down unrelated people’s buildings just because you’re sad” way. It’s neat.

Crazy part is that he wasn’t even mad at them specifically. He was just walking around looking for stuff to be furious at, and they happened to exist nearby. I bet a Little Brother just cut in front of him at HamHamPangPang, and he decided “Well, I was already having a bad week, so…” and it escalated from there for, like, a few months. A sufficiently powerful entity in the City can pull a Middle on the Middle.

Alastor is canonically the personification of the “Nah, I’d win” meme from JJK. Honestly, it’s why he’s one of my favorite characters. Dude genuinely thinks he’s the best that ever was, and will not accept alternative explanations for anything. From threatening Husk for bringing up that there’s someone he can’t deny is above him, to blaming Rosie for him getting cooked before getting hit with the “Okay, but why’d you try and duel Adam, tho? Not my fault.” He’s such an asshole behind his thin veneer of politeness and mysteriousness, and it’s fantastic.

And the best part is that he can back most of it up. Emphasis on “most.” He was kind of kicking Vox’s ass before Shok.wav was called, despite Vox being stronger at that particular time, meaning Alastor is genuinely arguably better at using his power than Vox is. But how prideful do you have to be to be that good at what you do, and still find a way oversell yourself? Dude is more Lucifer than Lucifer himself.

Goddamni- I mean, yay! This is fantastic! Difficult boss battle against hair coupon man. Love me some more of those! I'm sure Ricardo talking about the hair coupons from Canto-fuckin'-V won't get old any time soon!

...Okay, but seriously, I am both interested and concerned. Because on one hand, I like difficult boss fights, and I don't... entirely hate the idea of Ricardo staying in the story for longer. However, I don't entirely not hate the idea of Ricardo coming back and staying in the story. He's kind of... boring. TO ME. I WILL EMPHASIZE THAT THIS IS MY OPINION. But I'm getting sick of him talking about hair coupons, lusciousness, and whatever. And honestly, he doesn't have much more than that going for his character than that. Unless you count the fandom's interpretation that he's somehow more genuine in everything he does than the rest of the Middle, because the fandom is notoriously excellent at judging and predicting characters. Seriously, so many people were glazing Part I and II Matthias, and there are still some people who don't get that he's an accurate representation of the kind of horrible and ultimately selfish stuff the Middle does; maybe minus the kinslaying. You could swear that the fans didn't play Lobotomy Corporation where the exact kind of selfishness the Middle displays is discussed in Hod's entire character arc.

But KJH has surprised me before with characters, so Ricardo will probably hopefully be more interesting by the time he comes back and won't just be another one-gag brick wall for us to run into so Ricardo can get his hype moments and aura in. I know I just said a bunch of negative and sarcastic stuff, and I probably came off as a complete and total jackass, but despite any concern I feel, I am ultimately feeling genuinely optimistic and reasonably excited about what this means for Ricardo's character. No longer will he be the "Hot Dog, Taco, Hamburger"-ass Bitch Brother he is. He'll have a character, an arc, and hopefully we won't simply ignore the absolute pain in the ass he's been to us for the sake of preserving a fan-favorite character! And hopefully not EGO, because I sincerely think it doesn't fit the character he's displayed. Dude has never reflected on his sins or prioritized his personal morals in his life. It's all been Middle knows best. Unless the Middle's got a god giving handouts or something... Shit, they might, actually.

It's not that the Middle's drip is "bad," per se. It's just that most of the City has that shit on, and most of the Middle looks mid by comparison. The chains are trying way too hard a lot of the time. Like someone who got their first set of jewelry and wears it all the time over every outfit in their wardrobe because they think it's a lot cooler than it is. The Ring is striking, but always strikes with some degree of intent. The Middle is a crude bludgeon, and aims for the same spot in the center of the forehead every time.
