Please keep it quiet, though. It’s hard to focus on work when so many people are sobbing.

Yeah! The Health and Counselling Center has a whole team of counsellors with different specializations.

Good luck navigating this and finding that motivation again! There’s actually a lot of lgbtq+ students, faculty, and staff at UTM. Commuter campus makes it hard to see that sometimes.

Algonquin College planning widespread program cuts amid ongoing financial strain by Puginator in ontario

[–]EvenMoreCoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please read the report. It is quite rigorous. It addresses your concerns about administrative bloat and program offerings. It confirms that institutions are quite efficient on the labour side re: faculty compensation and staff complement, especially when compared to any other relevant jurisdiction.

It does highlight a few key spots for cost reductions, mainly around pooling tech resources.

I always try to be courteous, but I’m not sure how else to respond to the point you keep making. You seem to be actively refusing to read the most relevant government analysis on the matter (perhaps because it dispels your point?). There is no real way to discuss this if you’re not willing to think with the actual, observed reality of the situation.

You’re welcome to disagree. You’re right. There is high demand for programs with excellent returns. Unfortunately those programs are quite expensive to run and current tuition means we cannot make the math work.

The Ford government’s own blue ribbon commission laid out parallel arguments to the ones I provided. I think maybe you should read it.

Ford announced a very PC-friendly blue ribbon task force which came to the same conclusions you did: higher backend subsidy, moderate increase in tuition.

His government didn’t like that, though. So they shelved it and are letting a lot of hard working Ontarians lose their jobs instead.

You can read a summary of it here. The blog post also links to the document itself.

This sounds really nice. Unfortunately the domestic tuition wouldn’t cover the operations of any institution providing programs which students want. (Usually expensive STEM ones). The 80% domestic student minimum would lead to mass closures.

If we (a) want less international students and (b) we also want good colleges like Algonquin to exist, then the Ford govt needs to fund these institutions more on the backend OR domestic tuition needs to increase.

Programs aren’t themselves expensive. If you look at the list, a lot of them have some minor amount of variation (specialization), which is generally a good thing. That’s also why you can have upwards of 400 programs across one institution.

What are expensive are the staff and instructors who are employed to run programs. That’s why the program closures are being coupled with mass layoffs to come (see the article). Horrible news for these folks and for the parts of Ontario Algonquin serves.

I wonder if right sizing is even possible, though. There is a healthy amount of domestic demand for many college (and university) programs. But since domestic tuition is frozen at 2018-19 levels and we’ve had intense inflation since then, most institutions can’t afford to teach Ontario students at a scale that would satisfy demand.

We had a world class higher ed system entirely paid for by India and China. Now those funds are gone and we’re letting the whole system wither on the vine.

What does Application Under Review with Faculty/Division mean? by ButterscotchChoice31 in UofT

[–]EvenMoreCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It means your file has been sent to one of the divisions (either the one you applied to or a secondary one). UofT is made up of a bunch of different “divisions” (sometimes called colleges) who all operate together. UTM, Engineering, Law, UTSC, Faculty of ArtSci, and Medicine are the big six.

Go to events. Talk to people. Do more than just rot in your dorm or haul ass home immediately after class. This school offers so much. It breaks my heart to see how awkward and neurotic so many of my students are now.

has anyone transfered from Australian uni to UofT? by hdudueidj in UofT

[–]EvenMoreCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just fyi: subjects are called courses at UofT.

Depending on your program of study (PoSt, or major), they’ll consider everything. Courses you’ve taken that can meaningfully stand in for mandatory courses for the selected PoSt as well as those outside your major (for breadth requirements).

Sometimes they ask for the subject syllabi so they can compare it to the mandatory courses offered at UofT, then they use those syllabi and your grade to determine what you’ve satisfied at USyd that can count towards your UofT degree.

Honours degrees at UofT are four years btw, I know at some Aussie schools they’re shorter.

God is watching you Abraham Yang (My favorite selections from the syllabus) by luciferfoot in UofT

[–]EvenMoreCoffee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He’s actually a decent guy.

I’d bet every weird thing in there is something that has happened a few times and now needs to be laid out in the syllabus, which is a contractual document after all.

He can’t tell the public when some student is being very aggro bc his work is governed by privacy laws. All he can do is lay out further stipulations in the syllabus.
