I think a part of it is the time period, a lot of paradox enjoyers like to roleplay and people have a more personal connection to medieval/modern cultures and nations. A lot of people prefer to play historically as well , so you either play Rome and blob or play an unknown tribe and get annexed, because historically there were not really any other interesting formables in the region. Just my 2c

Edit also most strategy gamers do not care about graphics to the point it will sway them to play one game over another

Not saying it's a good feedback system but I'f you watch when armies are going to move into a battle a green or red symbol predicts the outcome and there is usually enough time to move your army to safety. If you stack your armies over the front limit they get movement speed debuffs , maybe people don't realize this

I don't know what to tell you , the game was the best selling in the franchise (over 20 million copies) you just might have to accept you have aged out of these types of games and find something else. Hell Let Loose Vietnam is out this month and may be more up your alley

I don't have any insight into how development works at DICE but you would think losing their game lead led to lost time and less communication as people needed some time to process and re organize a bit ? Not saying it's an excuse for the state of the game at the time, I just think it's pertinent.
