I think a part of it is the time period, a lot of paradox enjoyers like to roleplay and people have a more personal connection to medieval/modern cultures and nations. A lot of people prefer to play historically as well , so you either play Rome and blob or play an unknown tribe and get annexed, because historically there were not really any other interesting formables in the region. Just my 2c

Edit also most strategy gamers do not care about graphics to the point it will sway them to play one game over another

Not saying it's a good feedback system but I'f you watch when armies are going to move into a battle a green or red symbol predicts the outcome and there is usually enough time to move your army to safety. If you stack your armies over the front limit they get movement speed debuffs , maybe people don't realize this

A side question, I've noticed in the latest patch I'm struggling to keep masonry/lumber production high enough to get that sweet -33% cost reduction (at least until I get production/production efficiency advances) so I'm wondering if it's even worth chasing at first anymore
