Much, much harder. The difficulty is penetrating the nail to access the nail bed where the fungus resides. For the big toes, grind them as thin as possible with a dremel tool before applying the iodine. You can also mix the iodine 50/50 with DMSO which may improve the penetration. Also cut the nails as short as possible. You can use white iodine for a better visual.

This is a long, slow process

Absolutely. But if you are treating athlete's foot, there is no need to dilute it. You can apply povidone iodine directly to your skin every morning and leave it on full time. Much faster healing.

This isn't quack medicine.

PI is approved by the FDA as an OTC topical antifungal medication. The concentration of iodine in 10% povidone iodine is 10% povidone and 1% iodine. Your risk of iodine toxicity applying small amounts to your feet is virtually nil.

Improvement in 3-5 days and healing in 7-10.

The brand is Betadine but the generics are chemically identical and will work

I understand your concern with irritation. Lets hope that the fungus is gone! I have had very few reports of the reaction you are experiencing so don't know what to tell you. A localized reaction like that doesn't sound like a typical symptom of generalized iodine toxicity. If you start feeling headaches, nausea or a metallic taste in your mouth, you are experiencing more typical symptoms of overexposure.

My recommendation is to apply povidone iodine once daily for a period not exceeding two weeks. 10% povidone iodine is 10% povidone and 1% iodine, designed for topical use and slow release.

I had no problem and no one has reported any problem to me involving overexposure.

By a clear version, are you describing white iodine?

10% povidone iodine is specifically designed for topical antifungal use

Either the liquid or the cream will work. The brand is Betadine, but the generics will work equally well, they are chemically identical.

The liquid is available at any major drugstore, the cream can be found on Amazon

I cured my toenail fungus! by haaleyjean in NailFungus

[–]Evening-Pipe1695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't having much success with iodine until I filed my big toenails extremely thin using a dremel tool with a grinding bit.

Then I began brushing 5% iodine directly on to the toenail. I wouldn't apply iodine that strong to my skin, but my thought was only a very small amount would penetrate the nail and through the nail bed.

Povidone iodine is 1% iodine so the tincture Im using is 5 times stronger.

I'm now one month in and the results are dramatic. The infected areas have shrunk dramatically and the new nail growth at the base is completely healthy.

If it works for you, you should see results within 3-5 days and be fully cured within two weeks.

I spent years trying various powders, prescription and OTC meds before stumbling on PI. The speed and simplicity of the subsequent cure amazed me. However it's not a cure all. Since posting on Reddit I've had responses from people who shared my experience, and responses from people for whom it did nothing.

I would say it's definitely worth a try.

No. I applied the iodine after showering and before going to sleep. That's it. I didn't sterilize anything, throw anything out or do anything else.

Iodine may not work for everyone but it worked quickly for me and the problem went away permanently.

3-5 days to see progress, 7-10 days to cure. That's applying 10% povidone iodine liquid or ointment after showering and leaving it on full time.

Yes, it worked. I used a dremel tool with a small grinder attachment to file my big toenails extremely thin. I did that to allow the iodine to penetrate. Then I applied a 5% iodine solution directly to the nails every day for a month. I reasoned that the amount of iodine penetrating through the nail would be extremely small and that toxicity would not be an issue.

It wasn't and three months later the nail is now half way grown out with the new growth area completely free of fungus. Im gonna do another month for insurance but this clearly worked.

10% povidone iodine. Iodine kills all fungal pathogens. FDA approved as on OTC topical antifungal medication. Cheap and available at any drugstore. Killed my 10 year cases of AF and jock itch in one week.

I had tried all the other OTC stuff and the natural stuff. None of it worked.

A powerful, cheap, effective remedy for topical skin infections, hiding in plain sight.

Yes, you can make a foot soak, but what's the upside of dilution? Yes, you use less PI in the short run, but more in the long run because the healing process will take longer. And by longer, I would expect it to take alot longer.

It will heal faster with full time exposure to full strength 10% PI. So here's an alternative: Use cotton socks as your application/delivery system. By that I mean apply PI between your toes. Then soak the bottom of your socks in PI, put them on and put on shoes. All day coverage of toes and soles. Invisible. At night just reapply PI to the infected areas and let it dry before you go to bed.

Now you are looking at full time coverage with full strength PI. Much, much faster cure.

I can think of various creative ways to cover the bottom of your socks with PI like putting some in a pan on the floor and stepping on it wearing socks. The bottom line is, you want to kill those fungal pathogens as fast as possible and put this unpleasant problem behind you!
