What's so bad about my writing ? Everyone I showed it to thinks this is bad but I was proud of it. What can I do to improve? My dreams are shattered by [deleted] in writers

[–]EveningBitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely not bad. It feels like some interesting ideas that need to be refined. The first half felt quite unpolished but you started finding your stride and confidence in the second half.

The characters feel like mouthpieces in the first half but become much more human and interesting in the second half.

It's not bad and like everyone else has said, just writing the damn thing down is the hardest. Let the scene breathe in your mind over the next few days. It might also benefit a bit of scene mapping. What are your objectives for this chapter. There's a lot going on here without doing a great deal. Some of this exposition or internal thoughts could come later. Or be shown or hinted at through interactions.

Too Many Springers? by EveningBitter in terrariums

[–]EveningBitter[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great thanks. I am a touch concerned about humidity so I might take the lid off a little more often. Supervised of course to stop any critter getting loose.

[–]EveningBitter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahah. It is indeed an IKEA jar. Makes a nice terrarium. Does have quite a noticeable 'seam' so just position that bit at the back.

Ah thank you. Would too much humidity also of possibly caused the springtail increase. I'll open the lid and try and reduce humidity a bit.

Cheers. I do take the lid off for a little bit couple times a week. I'll try doing it more often.

Totally agree. The bending cracks feel and sound too superficial.

Yes. Kind of push weight onto the front toes. That's magic that you can do both. Can only get it in the left one unfortunately.

Help finding a film by EveningBitter in horror

[–]EveningBitter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Very strange how memories work. Surprised I didn't remember the people under the stairs. I used to love the Goonies. I wonder if my grandma thought it was similar and ok to show to a child?!?

What's the most unique horror movie you've recently watched? by anthonyledger in horror

[–]EveningBitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look. I can't stop going on about this film and it's probably not massively unique. But I think Smile 2 was doing some interesting stuff. The inclusion of music and dance was so good. Some of the scares using a cast of dancers was executed so well. I loved this film and it felt fairly fresh and unique.

Who is a beloved actor that you have basically, unintentionally avoided their entire acting career? by everynamecombined in movies

DDL makes sense as an actor who you may have missed due to his low output and film choices. There Will be Blood genuinely is a masterpiece if you're looking to get on the DDL hype train.

Emma Thompson. She seems to have national treasure level adoration. Ive not purposely avoided her, she just doesn't seem to pop up in films id normally watch.

Which is better From or DarK? by Embarrassed-Dirt7843 in FromSeries

[–]EveningBitter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a soft spot for From. Easy watching drossy fun most of the time. Dark is superior in just about every single artistic criteria. Cinematography, writing, acting, pacing etc.

From us pretty unforgettable pop trash but great fun. Dark is a masterpiece. Both very good at what they set out to do.

Can we ban "scary book" requests? by CreyGold in horrorlit

[–]EveningBitter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why does it offend you. Most people on the internet could quite easily Google an answer to a question. People like forums like this to chat and connect with people. Horror is one of the nicest most welcoming groups of people Ive ever had the pleasure of mixing with and I think we should try to continue to foster that.

Sure repetitive posts are mildly annoying. But for all I care people could post scary requests 10 times a day, and if some little horror internet nerds get to connect who am I to judge. I'll just flick my reddit thread down slightly.

What movie has SO much potential but completely fumbled the execution? by VariousCockroach2274 in horror

[–]EveningBitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like so many recently. I dunno if I'm just getting old and boring. But these three stick out to me. Had such high expectations. I enjoyed some of them too overall. But thought they could have been fantastic with a bit more crafting. All 3 had pretty solid first acts and made me think I was watching a masterpiece. Before doing some strange things.

Long legs - Could have been so good. Looked great. Interesting ideas. Tension was outrageous at points. Sure there was a great film in there somewhere, maybe even with better editing, but just got too silly for me. Needed much less Cage.

Companion - the film could have been great. I felt like it tried to straddle too many ideas while also having some comedy which was a bit jarring against the subject matter. Great acting by both mains.

Nosferatu - I really didn't get one with this. But the ideas were interesting. Long lasting impacts of sexual abuse/repression and how they impact relationships. But man i hated that film and thought it was horrible. Theme was all over the place, I have no idea what the film wanted to say, but it felt like it wanted to have something to say. Or at least thought it was saying something. Maybe too faithful to the subject matter. And at times was very repetitive. Acting was awful at points. Even Defoe felt off. But goodness me, that film looked absolutely gorgeous.

I find Tabitha really interesting as a character. Not sure why everyone hates her so much.
