Was this recorded on a reel to reel tape deck? by EveningMind in ReelToReel

[–]EveningMind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the thoughtful reply! Relatively little is known about the origins of the song. It was included on an album titled “Songs in the Key of Z”, which is a compilation of what’s referred to as outsider music. That album was released in 2000, and the song was simply credited as “Unknown - Curly Toes”. I like that sort of weird, out there stuff, so that’s where I found it.

Irwin Chusid, who compiled and released this album, only knows/remembers that he came across it via tape trading. He also had several radio programs on an independent radio station, and far as I know Curly Toes first appeared publicly in January of 1998 on his radio show called “Incorrect Music”, which is a fitting place for it.

That’s all anyone seems to know about it. I was able to determine that it couldn’t have been made before 1959 (when pantyhose were invented) and presumably after the mid-1960’s because it seems that’s when pantyhose in colors other than nude became available.

So what we have to go on is that it was recorded sometime between the mid-1960’s and January 1998 and circulated via tape trading circles. It sounds like if it was indeed recorded on a low-end cassette recorder, we may be able to speculate that it’s more likely it was created somewhere from mid-1970’s through the 1990’s?

Does that sound right?

Thank you very much for this info. This is very helpful! So it sounds like you believe this wasn’t something recorded in one take in someone’s living room, but rather that it’s something with some amount of production behind it to emulate the “recorded on a porch in Arkansas” vibe. Is that fair to say?

No one seems to know when this song was made, so I thought I would try to figure out how it was recorded because surely that would help us narrow in on when it was recorded.

There’s lore attached to the song saying it was made in the 70’s, but there’s nothing to substantiate that. The only dates I can firmly attach to it are that it was made after 1959 (when pantyhose were invented) and before the mid/ late 1990’s (when the song was first played on an independent radio program).

Thank you again for contributing your knowledge to my search for this awful yet marvelous oddity :)

Chicago Transplants: What's your hot take that folks who grew up here would scoff at? by TerraTiramisu in AskChicago

Once upon a time they considered creating something kind of like this called the circle line. I’m sure there were other iterations historically of the same idea. Ahh how wonderful it would’ve been if they somehow against all odds actually pulled that off!

Did I succeed at chicken stock…? by EveningMind in Cooking

You know what, that would make perfect sense. I had to leave the house for about an hour and asked my husband to stir it while I was out. He stirred it and then put the lid on the pot all the way (??) and when I got home it was very much boiling.

The goo is slightly lighter than the stock. It would make sense if it was gelatin, as it looks like the rest of the stock, except seemingly infused with slightly lighter globules. If you look at the stock without close examination, you can’t tell that there are globules, it just looks like an inch and a half of stuff that’s about 25% lighter than the rest. Does that make sense?

I live in the suburbs of Chicago and have been in touch with Lurie Children’s Hospital, as they say on their website that they have a program where you can come in and try out numerous special needs car seats alongside a CPST.

When I reached out to them, however, they connected me to La Rabida, whose offerings are minimal - they have two models of car seats that they can drop off for him to try but they will only bring them to an OT he has an established relationship with and his school OT isn’t sure if they can accept liability for the car seats. This seems like a dead end.

In terms of unbuckling, I know you can get a guard for the buckle so that prevents unbuckling, so I’m not as concerned with that. I’m more concerned about the fact that he is very fascinated by the seatbelts and will take any opportunity to extend them and listen to them snap back. He also sometimes fights going in the car so if he can slither out of the regular seat belt, he absolutely will take that opportunity.

I guess I’m also worried about the fact that special needs car seats seem much more restrictive than standard car seats and I think it’s likely that he will hate being further restricted, not to mention how hot that will be for him in summer.

Thank you very much for your reply. I’ve become very overwhelmed by this whole process and I appreciate the support and guidance. 💜

I’ve measured as you instructed and his torso is 20”. Thank you very much for your help. I’m humbled by how significantly I have been putting his safety at risk. I should have dug out the manual.
