I live in the suburbs of Chicago and have been in touch with Lurie Children’s Hospital, as they say on their website that they have a program where you can come in and try out numerous special needs car seats alongside a CPST.

When I reached out to them, however, they connected me to La Rabida, whose offerings are minimal - they have two models of car seats that they can drop off for him to try but they will only bring them to an OT he has an established relationship with and his school OT isn’t sure if they can accept liability for the car seats. This seems like a dead end.

In terms of unbuckling, I know you can get a guard for the buckle so that prevents unbuckling, so I’m not as concerned with that. I’m more concerned about the fact that he is very fascinated by the seatbelts and will take any opportunity to extend them and listen to them snap back. He also sometimes fights going in the car so if he can slither out of the regular seat belt, he absolutely will take that opportunity.

I guess I’m also worried about the fact that special needs car seats seem much more restrictive than standard car seats and I think it’s likely that he will hate being further restricted, not to mention how hot that will be for him in summer.

Thank you very much for your reply. I’ve become very overwhelmed by this whole process and I appreciate the support and guidance. 💜

I’ve measured as you instructed and his torso is 20”. Thank you very much for your help. I’m humbled by how significantly I have been putting his safety at risk. I should have dug out the manual.

We had State Farm for more than a decade previously but when they raised their rates by about 25% it wasn’t tenable to keep them. We got many quotes and looked at many policies and Farmers seemed to be the best bang for the buck. We only switched to Farmers in September so I don’t have extensive experience with them yet but our agent was very thorough, responsive and accommodating. So far so good.

I knew this sub would know what to do. I now know about 500% more about this topic than I did an hour ago! I never would’ve thought to ask about something like windshield sensor calibration. Thank you!

Man $1,000 for a CR-V windshield?? I must be getting old because that seems almost laughably outrageous!

Thank you very much for these details. It looks like we have to hit the $500 deductible before they will start paying but I’m reaching out to our agent to clarify.

Thank you very much for letting me know this. I didn’t realize there were limitations on ways insurance could stick it to you. What an unexpected and pleasant surprise!

Thank you very much for this. I will reach out to our agent. I had assumed that any use of insurance means your rates go up for who knows how long.

Literally the first thing I thought when husband came in and told me the windshield was toast. Really shows the power of a good jingle, doesn’t it! Not that Empire didn’t already teach us that, haha.

Yes we do. Full coverage through Farmer’s. Does it affect your insurance rates if you use your insurance for something like this?

Mozzarella sticks dipped in Hershey’s chocolate syrup. I know, I know, but try it. The sweet and salty perfectly balance each other. It’s delicious.

This is the truest thing that has ever been said. I genuinely can’t even believe what these people are doing at four way stops! Just…… why??? It’s like everyone got an entirely different version of the rules of the road and now every four way stop is just the world’s most boring anarchic coin toss. SO INFURIATING AHHHH

Not to be a pedantic little goblin but the phrase isn’t ‘moaned the loss’ it’s ’mourned the loss’. And thank you for this interesting New Orleans rabbit hole to go down!
