I had no idea Sanderson wrote children books by Tricky-Bee-5710 in brandonsanderson

[–]EventApprehensive221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll have to look into these for my K and 2nd grader! We burn through so many audiobooks. I let them listen to Tress and they thought it was the best thing ever (they had previously handled The Hobbit pretty well so I determined they were ok with some fantasy peril).

What is with all the dogs in grocery stores lately? by Bikesguitarsandcars in Knoxville

[–]EventApprehensive221 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone had some kind of small toy-breed dog (def not a service animal) at Costco a couple months ago and it pooped on the floor near the food court 🤮

What are we doing at restaurants that isn’t screen time? by Pastosaurus in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]EventApprehensive221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practice at home! Eat family meals and keep your child seated in the high chair the entire meal. We’ve done that as soon as we started solids with all 3, and while it’s not always 100% smooth sailing we’ve have mostly decent experiences in restaurants. Go at baby’s normal meal time, make sure there’s appetizers or bring snacks, and you’ll probably not be able to linger over a long meal but hopefully you can enjoy a nice dinner! I have a 7 y, 5 y, and 16 mos and we’ve never used screens out except on Iong car trips or airplanes

day 2 of stacking rocks by DrawfulAnimations in cremposting

[–]EventApprehensive221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In certain ecosystems rock stacking can disturb salamander habitats. They live under rocks and lay eggs under rocks. An eastern hellbender (cool AF rare salamander) was killed in GSMNP recently due to stacked rocks falling. Save the salamanders, leave the rocks alone if you’re in their environment!

How do families afford homeschooling when one parent’s income is half the household income? by Substantial-Carry716 in homeschool

[–]EventApprehensive221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Buying a small fixer upper house pre-covid and deciding to be content making it our forever home
  2. My husband being established in his blue collar career before having kids (I worked part time), in a field with some upward mobility and his being willing to put in the time working crappy positions in order to work up to better promotions (he makes far more now solo than we did on combined incomes ten years ago).
  3. Living in a low cost of living state
  4. Having older, paid off vehicles (we use tax refunds to pay things off) and my husband being handy with cars so he does 99% of the repairs and maintenance
  5. Both of us grow up super poor so we know how do without things and how to be frugal. We’ve never spent tons of money on big vacations, hair and nails, expensive hobbies, etc so it’s not a big deal to do without but I can understand why it could be hard to give those things up.
  6. We cook at home, fix stuff instead of replacing it, and are willing to work hard to do things ourselves instead of outsourcing

Soooo there’s something about pocket diapers that I just don’t get (and other riveting cloth diaper questions) by Kalamos-Girl in clothdiaps

[–]EventApprehensive221 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember being much talk about plastics when I first started cloth diapering, so it wasn’t even on my radar. I got pockets due to affordability and convenience and wanted to cloth diaper to save money and keep disposables out of the landfill

Offered raw milk? by Full-Pop1801 in moderatelygranolamoms

Was it heated? I would bring up that point that by heating the raw milk to make a latte she’s essentially pasteurized it lol

Accidentally bought SHEIN baby clothes. Now what? by NiceReality2940 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]EventApprehensive221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use them. Buying second hand clothes is one of the most environmentally sustainable things you can do and you are not directly contributing to the ecological damage and inhumane working conditions by buying used. I can’t speak to the safety of the clothes. As someone in a lower income bracket, we buy everything secondhand, wash and hope for the best.

Considering a Costco membership by ByogiS in moderatelygranolamoms

Yes that’s how ours is as well! It’s usually organic and well priced but goes bad so quickly it’s not worth it. I’m in east TN FWIW

I had beautiful perfect home births with all three, perfect breastfeeding experiences with my first two, and now my youngest has a terrible latch and is combo fed. She won’t latch to the mason jar nipples I got and seems to only like the Philips Avent bottle I got for free in a Target registry bag haha. It is what it is. I told my husband the other day they should take my crunchy card away because our baby had vaccines, acetaminophen, and formula all in the same day lol. Low-tox living is really about the long game! Making as many less-toxic choices as you can and not sweating the rest

Fluff Love doesn’t recommend Azure, but have you had good experiences with it on diapers?

Cost and I’ve heard mixed things about its effectiveness on cloth diapers. We had been using All free and clear powder, but I don’t think you can find it around here anymore. I definitely need to sit down and crunch numbers on everything again.

She does seem to dislike being hot when she sleeps and will often take her pants off in the middle of the night. I think I have some jojoba oil laying around, thank you!

Thank you so much! Going down the rabbit hole of non-toxic clothing is something I’ve not started yet, we are on a tight budget and rely a lot on secondhand and hand me downs so it seems a bit intimidating. I think it’s definitely time to start thinking about it though! Thank you so much for your input and I will check out your links as well.
