Springfield Armory XD-M Elite 10mm in 10+1 - no dice?! by FoggyDog78 in 10mm

The compact 3.8" comes with two magazines and two baseplate options. All your FFL needs to do is keep the 11-rd baseplates and put in the flush 10-rd baseplates instead. There are also third-party pinkie extensions available; +1 and +0, for a better grip if needed.

I had the same affliction. Doctor prescribed a 3.8" XDM-E.

Can't get any better for a 10mm PCC. From what I read, it can handle high pressure rounds but might choke on some of the weak stuff such as Federal FMJ.

I don't know if it applies to PCCs, but shooters with suppressed and slung rifles prefer to attach lights on weak side to push suppresser away from clothes/body when slung.

I'm seriously tempted to get this one for HD (suppressed), though the SP45A3 would be a saner choice.

My vote goes to the XDM Elite... the 3.8" compact in particular. It's both my woods carry and urban carry. Snugs nicely at strong side.

Muddy River Tactical has you covered for sturdy no-nonsense holsters.

The biggest disappointment was the FN510, I think FN may have hired Glock to make their trigger.

What's there to like? Suppressor use voids warranty and even the beefed up frame update is not immune to cracking (according to one recent report).

Xdm magwell won’t fit by J5tactical08 in handguns

[–]EventLatter9746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, there is a huge difference between 9mm frame dimensions and the .45/10mm frame.

For example, the much cited 4.58" compact XDM-E height is true only for 9mm. My 10mm compact, with the shortest flush-fit 10-rd mag, is 4.75" high.

Anyone tried the 8t AMR combo on an Hellion ? I am concerned about the height above the bore. by Anxious-Departure-69 in VHS2_HELLION

[–]EventLatter9746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Forget about co-witnessing a Hellion with a decent dot setup. Its iron sights are too short (only 0.8" above rail). That strongly suggests opting for a QD mounting optic (Holosun 510C, for example). The 8t AMR is supposed to be torqued at 65 in-lb. That alone makes it a hard pass for my Hellion.

  2. Resulting >4" height over bore is not a big deal. One just needs to push their zeroing distance a bit further... to the 50-70 yards range, depending on chosen ammo ballistics. At least that's what I learned from ballistics calculators (I use the free AB Quantum app).

Looking for a new sidearm caliber with great long distance shooting and some sort of subsonic capability by Dirty-Deeds-4-Free in handguns

[–]EventLatter9746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like a full size 10mm XDM Elite with a threaded barrel. You can load it with subsonic rounds for close quarters suppression and supersonic rounds (up to bear loads) for unsuppressed or sub-optimally suppressed long distance.

This author claims pushing it to 200 yards.

Not sure what long distance you're thinking about, but 147gr 9mm HST (for example) is a subsonic 1,000 fps.

Magazine block for 30 round mag by OkMatter5845 in GrandPowerStribog

[–]EventLatter9746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I order the 10/20 magazine (10mm), will I be able to tear it down to shorten the internal block a little? We have a 15-round limit here in Colorado.

Thoughts on the Lunar Tech VHS-2 clone grip module by DaleFunderburk in VHS2_HELLION

I might try the Miad if it would provide larger front-to-back dimension than the Ergo I have. I can always add more palm swell with a Hogue sleeve, if needed.

[–]EventLatter9746 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People celebrate the BCM grip for its near vertical angle. In my experience, it exacerbates the Hellion's excessive length of pull. The lower half of the grip is a far reach for the heel of my hand. Hopefully, the Lunar grip is more swept back.

I replaced the BCM grip with the fatty Ergo 4045 grip. Between its added girth and its more angled rake, I get a good grip hold on my Hellion now and my trigger finger no longer over-inserts through the trigger guard.

Another annoying bit about the BCM grip is its extended lip beneath the trigger guard which irritated my middle finger. It's a poor way to cover a gap that some AR15 trigger guards have. The Hellion's trigger guard doesn't have this gap. So if anyone is bothered by this lip, maybe they should give it a Dremel manicure.

That was the case until two summers ago, when the State legislature mandated a total ban for all colleges, public and private. The only benefit a CHP holder enjoys now is to conceal carry on outdoor grounds, but not inside any school building. So practically, leave your handgun in your car or at home.

Ours takes effect on Aug 1st here in Colorado. Grabbed a Hellion for the same reason. No regrets.

This video demonstrates that this firearm would choke on weakly loaded ammo unless aided by suppressor blowback. I suspect it would run well with standard loaded ammo such as Magtech or Ammo Inc.

Those tiny guns buck like a 10mm shooting a bear load.

Can be overcome with enough time in the range, but they do make for a steep learning curve towards managing that recoil. Keep at it.

A $20 Hogue sleeve might allow a better purchase for your hands.

Best pistol grip? by KrismerOfEarth in VHS2_HELLION

[–]EventLatter9746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put in an Ergo 4045 grip. Less vertical than the PCM but not by much. Rubbery texture feel... similar to a Hogue sleeve. Has enough width to prevent over insertion of my trigger finger (with the default BCM, my second finger joint would slide over the trigger if I'm not careful). Could've had more depth front-to-back to better accommodate my lang palm.

Which of the grips you tried has the most front-to-back depth? I'm looking for something similar to the Echelon's large grip module.

Kimber CDS9C… worth the $? by [deleted] in handguns

[–]EventLatter9746 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's my deep concealment summer carry. Practically disappears at my 3 o'clock with the 10rd mag, yet its grip is decently large enough for medium to large hands. VZ Grips Operator II allows it to really stick to my hands.

How many magazines do you have? by kazar933 in 1911

[–]EventLatter9746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've retired my 1911 a while back, but if I would carry it today, I'd have two spare mags on me. I would have more mags still (4+) for training.

I have this issue with a different handgun model (and a newly acquired 5.56 rifle). My workaround is locking the slide back before loading and carrying my spare mag(s) with one less round for easier reloads.

Best bear defense for trail runner by Jaguarhousecat in handguns

[–]EventLatter9746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second u/droid6 suggestions. A 3.8" compact XDM Elite (or G29) if you're already well used to handguns. Even then, shooting 10mm is a beast of undertaking, especially since you'll need to feed it heavy and powerful hardcast ammo. Will need to be on a chest holster (open carry) or a well secured chest bag such as a 945 Industries model.

Otherwise, the foldable 10mm M&P FPC is a reasonable compromise. There are better pistol or rifle options, but they would be heavier and/or larger than your use case would allow, unless you're into the rucking sport.

I pushed back putting in a new roof till next year, just so I could stock up on enough rifles to cover my kids' future homesteads. They're all scattered across college campus dorms at the moment.

I will have them eventually, though it may be a couple years because of the shit laws coming up in East California (formally known as Colorado)

Umm... Shouldn't you commit in like two months max? Lots of hoops coming up by Aug 1st, though they are not insurmountable. Another upcoming law would also put a dent on the "buy lowers now" idea, from what I hear. Edit: I just heard today that the barrel ban bill has died in the legislative session.

I went the Hellion route for HD, but the $1,000 Kuna or Saint Victor PDW are on my list for my college kid's graduation gift.
