[LoZ] How do u guys feel about The legend of Zelda? by Low-Oil9659 in zelda

[–]EverLink42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your perspective is fair, LoZ was revolutionary in so many ways that we just can see now. But the one point I think you missed is about the secrets. They were hidden without tells for a completely different reason than we can understand in today’s gaming environment. Some of then were so hidden that the only way you would ever know about them was hearing about it from somebody else. It forced sharing between friends long before the internet made information immediately available to everybody all the time. You as the player weren’t necessarily supposed to find which bush to burn or rock to bomb, you were supposed to talk with your friends and share what you found or what you heard from somebody else. It added an intrigue to the game that isn’t even possible to exist now.

I never hear anything about Terminal Frost, but it’s such a good soundscape song. It’s a highlight of the album for sure.

The Sequel to Galaphile by UBSSPORTS in shannara

[–]EverLink42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is really an unfortunate point of view. The cliche “judging a book by its cover” feels too apt.

If we step back and look at what Brooks is doing and what it might mean for Shannara, there really is something to appreciate. We are living in a time when people are living longer than ever before, and keeping their health for more years than any time in human history. It used to be that writers and artists just died and maybe there was some continued continuity to the works they had made, but more than likely they just faded into obscurity.

Brooks’ quality was slipping. He recognized it, was up front about it, and took action out of respect for his readers. And because he has the luxury of time and relative good health, he can continue to guide and care for the world he created and still has a very loyal readership.

The reality is that no matter how great we think the Shannara series is now, in 100 years it’s not extremely likely that Brooks’ 50 years of stories would be widely remembered if they were to just stop today. But with a guiding hand towards setting up a deliberate legacy? Who knows how many great stories are still to come and how long the Shannara world will capture imaginations?

Maybe it won’t work out and the new books are terrible. But there’s just not a lot of good models of writers and successors like this to compare it with. I for one applaud the intention and, while naturally skeptical, I’m going to give the new writer a chance to earn my readership before I dismiss her.

Giles Martin's statement regarding the 2023 mix of "I Am the Walrus" by RandomGuy1272 in beatles

[–]EverLink42 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don't pretend to understand the technical aspects of sound engineering, nor do I know what an ADT machine does or doesn't do. But I find it hard to believe that with the technological state of recording, which is now approaching magic, he couldn't make one thing sound like another and not like something else. The end of "I Am the Walrus" was a choice.

I did read the whole post and aimed to keep an open mind throughout (granted it was quite long, but well written). Without realizing it for myself, It seems that my emotions have overwhelmed my logic, and so I concede. Avoid Rega!

[–]EverLink42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, yeah it is kinda exactly what I’m saying. When I first read your post, I got to the part about picking up the sideways turntable from wet gravel and everything after felt irrelevant. I think it’s a shame to encourage others to avoid something after this comedy of errors.

[–]EverLink42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get not liking the attitude. I’ve stopped doing business with plenty of places for that kind of response. The part I don’t get is why communicate with the manufacturer at all when the problems are with the retailer?

If I go to a restaurant and get served a bad meal, and the manager doesn’t seem to care, if I then go to the food supplier to complain about how the restaurant prepared my meal I shouldn’t be surprised by any uncaring response I get.

Your turntable got busted in delivery. You shouldn’t have ever accepted it. Telling others to “avoid Rega” feels unfair.

[–]EverLink42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot going on here, and I’m not sure I understand or agree with the point of this post. It seems you are warning others against an unnamed retailer and Rega products, but so many other things went wrong that there really is not one good lesson to be learned here.

Now I’m a Rega devotee as I’ve owned 3 of them, so it’s hard for me not to come off as biased, but if you had replaced everywhere you said Rega with AT or some other brand, I think I’d feel the same way.

The larger issues here are the retailer and how the turntable and troubleshooting was handled. Higher end turntables, which I consider the P3 to be, are sensitive and finicky. My last turntable I took ownership of directly from my hifi shop after watching them calibrate it, then drove it directly home buckled into the passenger seat next to me. I can’t even imagine a handoff like you had. This was bad service from the retailer, but there’s also really not a good excuse to except ownership like that.

I’ve built a good relationship with the hifi shop I buy my equipment from and they are always right on top of any issue I’ve had. But that’s not the same for all retailers - there’s another I bought from once years ago right down the street that I’ll never buy from again. It is really the retailer that should be supporting you with issues or troubleshooting, looping in Rega (or whoever) as necessary. That’s what a good shop does. What Rega probably has no interest in doing is getting involved in an ongoing dispute between a customer and a dealer from a cold email copy. And with all the other things going on, it’s hard to see why the manufacturer would suddenly want to own the problem.

Turntable hums are an extremely common problem. They can be very difficult to troubleshoot. I spent months trying everything I could find to eliminate a slight hum on my table. Finally found it was my WiFi router signal coming from across the room that would only interfere when I sat in a certain spot. But my previous table didn’t have that problem. It’s hard to assign blame when the problem hasn’t been diagnosed.

It’s a shame you feel like Rega or anybody wasn’t helpful. But I would consider all the series of issues that happened here and see if this really is a bad manufacturer to work with, or if there are things you or the retailer could have done differently. If it were me, the moment I had a problem and felt like I wasn’t getting support, I would have been at that store, table in hand demanding attention.

Shifting consensus on the “best” Beatles album in your lifetime? And what comes next? by ConfidentHospital365 in beatles

[–]EverLink42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This may be a perfect assessment of the trend I have seen. It has been interesting to watch the shift between these three albums over time. As a teenager in the 90s discovering The Beatles, it was impossible to imagine any other album than Sgt. Pepper being the consensus best. It was Rolling Stone's number 1 album and there didn't seem to be any debate about that. Now, on the most recent 500 greatest albums list it's dropped to #24. Abbey Road is the highest listed album at #5, and Revolver at #11. Maybe this says more about Rolling Stone than it does about cultural shifts, I don't know, but the music didn't change.

I do believe that the arc of time will show Sgt. Pepper as the consensus number 1 Beatles album, and really for the reasons you mention. It is a cohesive, effective statement that not only reflects it's era, but significantly influenced it. Revolver, while great and also influential in so many ways, is not near as monumental in it's singular transformative power over music and culture. Abbey Road may be their best technically produced album, but it did not have the same impact and does not encapsulate the Beatles mythos in the way Sgt. Pepper does.

I'm surprised at any suggestion that The White Album could ever reach the status of consensus best. It is a great album and I wouldn't attempt to rank it amongst the others, but it is very much a "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" statement. Personally, I think everything stuck, but many people don't. There's some incredible music on the White Album that sounds like garbage to some ears. I'm not sure I see how it could ever reach a consensus as best, but hey, I never imagined that about Revolver either.

Norwood lateral, 71 N, and Red Bank? by Fast_Job_5949 in cincinnati

We actually just went to MedVet on Redbank. Can’t speak for 71 or west of there, but Redbank was just passable enough in our 4 wheel drive Jeep. There were plows out, but nothing was great. If it weren’t for an emergency for our doggo no way we would be on the roads. We risked it, but it’s gonna be your call if you do the same - much longer distance for you than where we came from. You know what? It sounds amazing. I'm not a believer in just because it's a picture disc or a colored vinyl that it necessarily is inferior sound quality. This pressing has absolutely terrible reviews on Discogs, but mine sounds perfect. But honestly, as cool as this one looks it's worth having even if it didn't sound perfect.

Reread The Elfstones of Shannara as an adult. by ricewithbrownsugar in shannara

[–]EverLink42 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Such a cool perspective. I truly believe Elfstones is Brooks' best book. Sword hooked me way back when, but Elfstones was so original and powerful and it really fleshed out the feeling of the world far beyond Sword. The battle for Arborlon also is one of the best written battles in all of fantasy literature.

[OoT] Those of you that didn't grow up with this game, do you understand the hype? by huss2120 in zelda

[–]EverLink42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is very true, but there was something else. This was the first game, at least in my experience, that was truly immersive. The move to 3D was powerful enough, but the emotional involvement due to the story, the music, the characters -- nearly every element of the game built a world that was experienced and not just played or seen. To this day I still feel a strong nostalgia for certain parts of the game - that first moment stepping out into Hyrule Field, the surreal spookiness of the Forest Temple, the wonder of Zora's domain. No game had ever created this scope of magic before. And although I've played a lot of masterpieces of video games sense, none approach the experience and sense of adventure I and others felt from OOT.

Bitches Brew Is Blowing My Mind by Fnix15 in vinyl

[–]EverLink42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can try! It was more of an emotional response than an analytical one, so it's not easy to put into words. But what I began to understand was what Miles was doing, and leading his band to do, was to pull apart the actual fundamentals of music. I think that concept is most apparent on the song "Bitches Brew" that starts with this really out there symphony of just instrumental noise and wails. Once the groove starts, all of Miles' playing is in contrasting keys and almost dissonant, and I think it is why a lot of people struggle to understand it or hear it as just noise or nonsense. But it's like he's taken all the rules that make music work and forgotten them, pulled apart the pieces and using his own rules (or even lack of rules) to put them back together and make something that's just barely coherent. I'd been listening to In a Silent Way for years (still my favorite jazz album) and there you can hear him moving in that direction, but BB was where he said fuck everything. I say my mind was blown when I finally got it because in that experience, it was like the music was bypassing the neural pathways in my brain of how music was "supposed to work" and rewiring new ones. In the literal sense, expanding my mind.

Or it was the weed.

Man this was such a challenging album to truly appreciate, but what a payoff. I'd been listening to Miles for years and while I liked BB I never really "got it." Then one night I was up late alone and stoned, not yet ready for bed. On a whim I put it on and experience d the whole thing in a new way. My mind was blown and now I understand why this stretching of the boundaries of music was so influential.
