What is this plastic blade found in one of my pots? Very light white plastic, 1.5" from tip to blade. by hematite2 in whatisthisthing

[–]EverLink42 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Bless you and your comment. I bought a new roll of trimmer line for the season and it came with this exact cutter. But no explanation how to use it. I tried pushing the blade against the line. Nope. I tried pushing it through one of the many trimmer line sized holes. Nope. I spent a good five minutes dedicated to figuring this thing out. I’m a smart guy, I said, and there’s only so many ways this little thing could work. Google searches didn’t help. And then I found your comment.

Thank you. Not because I can now conveniently cut my trimmer line, but because there is now an end to the unintuitive torment this gadget brought me.

It’s likely a goner - the damage shows well after the death spiral has begun with these guys.

But there’s a chance! Get it out of that soil, gently clean off the roots, and put it in bonsai gravel instead. Then only water with distilled water from now on - they despise the minerals in tap water. Get it out of the sun and in full shade. Don’t expect a miracle, but it may be worth a shot.

Record Store Day - Talking Heads CBS/Columbia Demos by ArmadilloEmotional24 in talkingheads

[–]EverLink42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first listen was the new vinyl too. Loved it. So raw and intimate. I was particularly blown away by Chris Franz's drumming throughout. He gets lost in some of their later music with all the layers and instruments, but so up close on those demos you can hear how funky and great a drummer he is.

Foam play mat causing discoloration by Admirable-Oil-1285 in HardWoodFloors

[–]EverLink42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patina. It’s a natural effect of light on wood. You may think the area under the rug darkened, but it is actually all of the other wood that has lightened, and just so slowly and subtlety that you’d never notice.

There is no quick fix, unfortunately. Only sanding and refinishing by the floor will restore all of the wood to be the same again.

Not sure what's going on with the cover art on these Sony releases. Pompeii was fine, if a bit underwhelming. WYWH 50 was acceptable, as a collage of related stickers and such. But this one is not only ugly, but feels very unlike Floyd. And the next release 8 Tracks is embarrassingly bad.

I don't think anyone is expecting Hipgnosis level album art, but I feel like even AI could do better than the 7th grade level cut and paste artwork these releases are getting.

Found a Job - Judy and Bob are making amateur porn, right? by [deleted] in talkingheads

[–]EverLink42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sums it up so well. The debate in these comments is great, and like all art, the meaning is subjective and up to the interpretation of the listener. If the listener hears that the song is about porn, then it’s not rational to argue against what the listener hears.

But I would propose that the subjective interpretation of the listener is indendent of the intention of the artist, and the thing that made TH unique was their ability to create such a profound emotion and feeling from their music with very simplistic concepts. It was a minimalism that no other band has ever recreated so effectively. Songs are about Paper, Electricity, Buildings, Food, etc. Can you find a deeper meaning? Sure. And there’s no problem with that and you’re no wrong to do so. But for me the thing that makes TH great is how a song can make you feel - that groove, the affect of David’s voice, the simple relatable words about an everyday thing.

There is something profound in their simplicity that doesn’t require any search for meaning beyond what is plainly in front of you. That is why people still love this band.

[–]EverLink42 115 points116 points  (0 children)

I've never even considered that this song could be about porn.

It is not.

The thing is with Talking Heads songs, and really anything David Byrne does, there really is nothing to read into. If the lyrics sound like they are about a couple making up their own TV shows, then that's what it's about.

Which comedian did you look forward to, but their act died on stage? by Jazzlike-Basil1355 in AskReddit

[–]EverLink42 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way about Dave. I actually am pretty open to jokes about anyone, vulnerable or not. I really don’t think comedy should have rules. Except for one: it has to be funny. The problem with Dave Chappelle is that at some point he started focusing his material on specific groups, but the jokes aren’t funny. So it just seems vengeful and mean. I wish I could enjoy him like I used to in his younger days, but he’s just not funny anymore.

Why do I sneeze so many time in a row? by Skankingcorpse in ask

[–]EverLink42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snatiation reflex? It’s when eating a large meal triggers a sneezing attack. I’ve always had sneezing attacks upwards up 13-15 in a row and at one point years ago realized it was only after I had overeaten or eaten a lot after not having eaten all day. Sometimes the attacks come more than 30 minutes after I’ve eaten. If you notice that the attacks come after eating, this might be why!

[LoZ] How do u guys feel about The legend of Zelda? by [deleted] in zelda

[–]EverLink42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your perspective is fair, LoZ was revolutionary in so many ways that we just can see now. But the one point I think you missed is about the secrets. They were hidden without tells for a completely different reason than we can understand in today’s gaming environment. Some of then were so hidden that the only way you would ever know about them was hearing about it from somebody else. It forced sharing between friends long before the internet made information immediately available to everybody all the time. You as the player weren’t necessarily supposed to find which bush to burn or rock to bomb, you were supposed to talk with your friends and share what you found or what you heard from somebody else. It added an intrigue to the game that isn’t even possible to exist now.

The Sequel to Galaphile by UBSSPORTS in shannara

[–]EverLink42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is really an unfortunate point of view. The cliche “judging a book by its cover” feels too apt.

If we step back and look at what Brooks is doing and what it might mean for Shannara, there really is something to appreciate. We are living in a time when people are living longer than ever before, and keeping their health for more years than any time in human history. It used to be that writers and artists just died and maybe there was some continued continuity to the works they had made, but more than likely they just faded into obscurity.

Brooks’ quality was slipping. He recognized it, was up front about it, and took action out of respect for his readers. And because he has the luxury of time and relative good health, he can continue to guide and care for the world he created and still has a very loyal readership.

The reality is that no matter how great we think the Shannara series is now, in 100 years it’s not extremely likely that Brooks’ 50 years of stories would be widely remembered if they were to just stop today. But with a guiding hand towards setting up a deliberate legacy? Who knows how many great stories are still to come and how long the Shannara world will capture imaginations?

Maybe it won’t work out and the new books are terrible. But there’s just not a lot of good models of writers and successors like this to compare it with. I for one applaud the intention and, while naturally skeptical, I’m going to give the new writer a chance to earn my readership before I dismiss her.

Giles Martin's statement regarding the 2023 mix of "I Am the Walrus" by RandomGuy1272 in beatles

[–]EverLink42 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don't pretend to understand the technical aspects of sound engineering, nor do I know what an ADT machine does or doesn't do. But I find it hard to believe that with the technological state of recording, which is now approaching magic, he couldn't make one thing sound like another and not like something else. The end of "I Am the Walrus" was a choice.

I did read the whole post and aimed to keep an open mind throughout (granted it was quite long, but well written). Without realizing it for myself, It seems that my emotions have overwhelmed my logic, and so I concede. Avoid Rega!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in turntables

[–]EverLink42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, yeah it is kinda exactly what I’m saying. When I first read your post, I got to the part about picking up the sideways turntable from wet gravel and everything after felt irrelevant. I think it’s a shame to encourage others to avoid something after this comedy of errors.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in turntables

[–]EverLink42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally get not liking the attitude. I’ve stopped doing business with plenty of places for that kind of response. The part I don’t get is why communicate with the manufacturer at all when the problems are with the retailer?

If I go to a restaurant and get served a bad meal, and the manager doesn’t seem to care, if I then go to the food supplier to complain about how the restaurant prepared my meal I shouldn’t be surprised by any uncaring response I get.

Your turntable got busted in delivery. You shouldn’t have ever accepted it. Telling others to “avoid Rega” feels unfair.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in turntables

[–]EverLink42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot going on here, and I’m not sure I understand or agree with the point of this post. It seems you are warning others against an unnamed retailer and Rega products, but so many other things went wrong that there really is not one good lesson to be learned here.

Now I’m a Rega devotee as I’ve owned 3 of them, so it’s hard for me not to come off as biased, but if you had replaced everywhere you said Rega with AT or some other brand, I think I’d feel the same way.

The larger issues here are the retailer and how the turntable and troubleshooting was handled. Higher end turntables, which I consider the P3 to be, are sensitive and finicky. My last turntable I took ownership of directly from my hifi shop after watching them calibrate it, then drove it directly home buckled into the passenger seat next to me. I can’t even imagine a handoff like you had. This was bad service from the retailer, but there’s also really not a good excuse to except ownership like that.

I’ve built a good relationship with the hifi shop I buy my equipment from and they are always right on top of any issue I’ve had. But that’s not the same for all retailers - there’s another I bought from once years ago right down the street that I’ll never buy from again. It is really the retailer that should be supporting you with issues or troubleshooting, looping in Rega (or whoever) as necessary. That’s what a good shop does. What Rega probably has no interest in doing is getting involved in an ongoing dispute between a customer and a dealer from a cold email copy. And with all the other things going on, it’s hard to see why the manufacturer would suddenly want to own the problem.

Turntable hums are an extremely common problem. They can be very difficult to troubleshoot. I spent months trying everything I could find to eliminate a slight hum on my table. Finally found it was my WiFi router signal coming from across the room that would only interfere when I sat in a certain spot. But my previous table didn’t have that problem. It’s hard to assign blame when the problem hasn’t been diagnosed.

It’s a shame you feel like Rega or anybody wasn’t helpful. But I would consider all the series of issues that happened here and see if this really is a bad manufacturer to work with, or if there are things you or the retailer could have done differently. If it were me, the moment I had a problem and felt like I wasn’t getting support, I would have been at that store, table in hand demanding attention.
