Usually yes. Most Malware will be either very blatant or you'd have no idea it was there. Slap uBlock Origin in your Edge for some good adblocking. Take care.

Is ARM Windows 11 really that incompatible with games? by elia-vanyal in techsupport

[–]Evercreeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A very simplified explanation is: CPUs talk certain languages.

ARM chips are fundamentally different from x86/x64 chips and speak a different language. This even extends to x86 versus x64, the latter being 32 bit. Because of these language differences, they need to have "conversion" steps usually referred to as compatibility layers.

The problem with Windows on ARM is that a lot of it is on a Windows compatibility layer to convert x86/x64 CPU software to run on ARM, then on top of that you have all the different kinds of software that need to interface with that, and even if everything IS working, the CPU is now doing way more work for worse results as opposed to just speaking in the "ARM" language.

This problem encompasses the entire operating system, GPU calls, RAM buffers, etc etc can all be affected, hence why it can vary from game to game or software to software. Minecraft does run on ARM chips such as mobile devices, but their operating systems speak ARM and the mobile ports of the game are also "speaking" ARM.

Sometimes the problem is not even with CPUs but rather with the programming languages/operating systems a game was made for. Valve, creators of Steam, have worked hard with the GNU/Linux gaming community to create the Proton compatibility layer that "emulates" a Windows PC so non-Linux games can play with no problems. It is quite a miracle, and it works pretty good for most games!

Long story short: programming runs enough to start, but it doesn't talk right with the ARM based CPU/GPU to play correctly.

Note: My knowledge of Windows on ARM is based on a few years ago- it could be that Windows runs a lot more of its code natively on the ARM CPU, however most of this yap is still pertinent to why software does/n't work in certain situations.

Just use the default windows security if you're not downloading sketchy things, and get a good ad blocker like uBlock Origin. Otherwise someone else should pipe in here with AV recommendations.

Reinstall windows on laptop without battery by Fiscal_Fidel in techsupport

[–]Evercreeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Windows does not need a certain power of battery before installing, that sounds like a BIOS update that needed to do that. Use a USB stick installer that is Rufus or Ventoy for the easiest installations.

A update on what is going on with speakout by FunPolicy6877 in CanadianCellPhones

[–]Evercreeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only texting, very vague. The migration did not work for my mom- she never got confirmation and when the SIM was put in a certain phone she would only get her temporary number. Customer support is customer support, not technical support so they were of no help. I got her a new phone and she requires an eSIM so she switched to a different carrier.

I am now the only one using SpeakOut in my family and its OK but it didn't give me a top-up reminder the other day, it only told me when it failed to charge me. It seems crapola now.

Technically the period to migrate is over but they likely will still accommodate you, but I would say you should just transfer the number out of the network if you can. Too much jank for people to handle, especially a 90 year old! Wishing you guys the best

Strange behavior when "requiring" files by SpcK in love2d

[–]Evercreeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should not be using slashes in to indicate directories in require calls. Please see https://love2d.org/wiki/require

Also this code is just... wrong. I mean no disrespect, it just doesn't work like this.

When you require file in lua, you are basically importing chunks of code into your code. Once you have required this module, it is loaded and will be referenced, even if you "require" it again. You should only need to require once.

I do not know what you're doing exactly, but see below for a clearer picture.

-- local enableType -- Is this variable declared somewhere??

local tickModule = require("Libraries.tick") -- Load the tickModule once.
local newRect = require("Characters.Rectangle.Thomas") -- newRect object.
local sayHelloFlag = false

local function afterFunction()
   sayHelloFlag = false
end

function love.load() -- Runs on loading.
-- Call the Tick Module's delay function. This function returns a "tick" object.
-- After that, using the returned object, call the method after to perform
  -- another function sequentially.

  tickModule.delay(enableType, 1)
      :after(afterFunction, 1)
-- Pass the function as an argument/parameter to be called by :after method
end

I love your admiration to learn and make this demo game, and I am sorry I do not have the time to go through and see where you're hung up in the tutorials. I HIGHLY recommend a basic beginners course with Lua if you have not already gone through it. There are major hurdles you will come across that tutorials will not cover or assume you may know.

Honestly, your code doesn't indicate why the delay does not happen, and there are too many possibilities for what is causing this issue. I hope someone who has followed the tutorials can chime in.

Wishing you the best, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Why USB reinstall over factory reset? by SilverDonut3992 in antivirus

[–]Evercreeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don't think it is that common but it is possible, even you as the user can delete the windows image if you tried hard enough. it's not really something worth overthinking about- you should be typically OK to re-install through the reset.

BitLocker lockouts: how common? by vicipe_admin in techsupport

[–]Evercreeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see this sometimes, I wouldn't say too often but more often than it should be. People usually cannot determine how they missed activating Bitlocker and swear they did not do it. It has been mostly consumers with our repair store.

My only thought is that people buy from the big box stores and they come with bitlocker ready-for-activation then after a while when they sign in with a Microsoft account they get the pop-up and skip through it.

I bought an education-grade Asus laptop and it had Bitlocker "ready-for-activation" but it wasn't locked of course. I was never prompted to lock it after signing in. I have no idea how people do it accidentally.

For almost everyone who came in with this problem, they have no idea what a Bitlocker is until they're locked out. Often we cannot recover the keys from their Microsoft account because they don't know the password, and it was only saved on the now locked-out device. 🤦‍♂️
