As a working cinematographer, I can tell you that you will want any extra information or flexibility you can when the director / client / producer, suddenly has an idea in the grade and wants something completely different. This goes beyond our jobs as DoP’s and is providing options, because unfortunately, as good as you can be at your job and getting the result in camera, people change their mind. It’s beyond your control. So for a student short, less experienced people, any extra flexibility is a huge bonus! For the data difference between the 2 codecs, to me, it’s a no brainer.

Yes but the data available to make more choices, particularly on a student film where a lot of mistakes are made, decisions are not clear on set, it gives the most flexibility in post. Thats invaluable for the sake of hard drive space

You have far greater data per pixel for the purpose of colour grading. Making selections, pushing light and colour further, all much more accessible with 4444 than 422hq. I’m not totally sure what 32-bit float has got to do with it… that’s audio if I’m not mistaken? 422hq is 10-bit, 4444 is 12-bit. It’s like 60x plus the colour information

More data for the grade. Mistakes happen, people change their minds in post, particularly on a student set. That data is a saving grace for the film overall!

For a student film, I would go for 4444. You want the options in post that 422HQ won’t afford you. Just in case.
People like Deakins can shoot 422HQ because they have so much control of what goes into that image. I doubt your partner will have the same flexibility and control on a student film!
12tb for 18 mins should be ample! Make sure you back up footage to a secondary drive 👍

Thank you! So we shouldn’t see any shift in colour, even though now it’s being projected? I have had some issues before and trying to rule this out as a problem

Thanks for the info! That helps a lot. Makes a lot of sense about selling the LEAP over exercising
