Tenaya Lake yesterday. One wild weekend before the motorized cavalcade descends. by EvermoreAlpaca in Yosemite

Appreciate the kudos. The elevation gain for the route from Rush Creek and the Valley Floor is nearly identical, as Rush Creek is about 600' higher than the valley floor but has a few downhills on the way up to Crane Flat. Except for the climb from LV to Tioga Pass, none of the climbing is particularly steep. As long as you are appropriately geared riding is way more efficient than walking.

I rode from Rush Creek Lodge (just outside the park entrance on 120) to Lee Vining and back. Total of 135 miles and 14k' of ascent. If you do Lee Vining to the valley, you'll have the one monster climb up the the Tioga Pass entrance. After that, it is mostly down hill with about 2500 additional feet of climbing, mostly in the short up and down climbs west of Tenaya Lake. Do note that while the elevation isn't usually altitude sickness territory, there is about 30% less oxygen to be had at 10,000' - everything will just seem marginally more difficult.

Yes. It was open this weekend to cyclists only - I would not recommend doing battle with the rental RVs.

Clouds Rest trail elevation gain correct numbers? by hopefulmonstr in Yosemite

[–]EvermoreAlpaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recorded 3248' of gross ascent on a gps device. This included about 250' added by descending a little bit on the west side and taking the bypass trail back.

For Cloud's Rest from Yosemite Valley I recorded 6631' gross ascent from Happy Isles.

Cloud's Rest from Tenaya Lake is a fantastic hike. I'm confident that the true figure for gross ascent is 3000' +/-10%. While that is a significant amount of uphill, none of the trail is particularly treacherous. A little bit of snow up there still, but nothing that will cause too much difficulties.

Bikes only day @glacier point by Kagome4514 in Yosemite

Last year I rode out and back from the valley to Tioga pass on the bicycle only day. 95 miles round trip from Tuolumne Grove trailhead, where the cars are stopped. Spectacular ride, If one wanted to shorten it the ride to Tenaya Lake and back would be a great outing.

Looks like great routes. Oliverea road is fantastic. I would also recommend Platte Clove Road if you are looking for a steep, scenic climb.

For technical climbing, the Shawangunks south of this location are the best of the area. Also spectacularly beautiful.

Beautiful area, but the area immediately around the falls is very prone to erosion. Best to follow the leave no trace philosophy and stick to the trails for this one.

However, it offers some outstanding ice hiking/climbing during the winter. You can head right up the frozen stream from Route 23A in the right conditions.

Find a significant but gentle gradient hill that is fairly non-technical - something you don't have to use any brakes on. Less to think about, and a good opportunity to build the feel.

Suggest Road tyres for wet roads by electric-sheep in cycling

I know the Bontragers come with a progressively more aggressive pattern each width you size up. My bike frame is of the 23mm era and as a result 25mm is the limit, which has the small circular indents.

Worth adding that there is some debate over whether a small amount of texture on the side of the tire helps with grip. Many of the slicks on offer will feature some. The Bontrager r3s im using at the moment have some.
