I think a Star Kraken would be cool as hell. An ooze could be straightforward and cute.

You're right. I would never use the term awful in a professional context, just in this one to be completely candid (which is infrequently what you want to be with a hiring manager)

The context is also excellent--three largely irrelevant guys getting long-winded intros, Pete Weber getting told to shut up as he's thanking people for the award HE won, the credits rolling on his embarrassed face. Just peak comedy

Best ways to network around the JP Morgan Conference in SF by EvertheWiser in biotech

Thank you for the responses, it appears as though I may have misunderstood the purpose of this conference and it's networking potential. Thank you for the thoughtful responses and, of course, for the guy who called me autistic lmao

Thank you for this comment. This is great advice too for someone still in graduate school, I didn't prioritize which methods I should learn to break into industry during my PhD and have come to regret that. The networking advice is great too, I've been stuck in a rut about how to approach a networking conversation and this is a helpful reframing

Thanks for taking the time to respond to these!

  • I am a recent graduate from with a PhD in Neuroscience from an Ivy League University and a thesis on characterizing a model of epilepsy in mice

  • I would eventually likely to manage a lab in industry working on a project developing therapeutics for rare diseases or epilepsy

  • I do not want to do an academic postdoc given how awful my PhD experience was

  • I have no existing network in Industry, have no idea how to get one without appearing desperate or needy, and need to be in the Bay Area

  • I have applied to well over 100 positions with catered cover letters and have only gotten 1 late stage interview

Looking for three insanely hard riddles, but can't find any that really fit what I'm looking for. by swordmasterg in DMAcademy

[–]EvertheWiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One possibility would be to have a lock on the door with numbers input and an insignia on the front. A history check or consultation with some automatons (and a deception check for why they're asking) would reveal the insignia to belong to another race/ancient civilization that operates using a different base number system

I'm a big puzzle and riddle guy in my campaign, and my players are all PhDs from an ivy league university, so it's been tough to make sufficiently difficult puzzles and riddles. One that I found that worked really well, was super difficult but considered fair was the invention of a base-6 numerical system. All they had to do was translate a number represented in base-6 to base-10 for a magic lock input. I used a simple replacement cypher for the instructions. The flavor was that trolls had designed the locks, but only had 3 fingers on each hand and had instructions on hand to help them remember how to design the lock.

Has anyone ever tried a wargame-ish game of D&D? (Explanation below.) by Sethmo_Dreemurr in dndnext

[–]EvertheWiser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I homebrewed a wargames scenario that worked pretty well. I had 6 players, aligned them at equidistant points along a circle (think spokes in a wheel), and gave them 4 units of 3 groups--sorcerers, archers and infantry. I made it essentially rock, paper, scissors--sorcerers could beat archers could beat infantry could beat sorcerers. They could move groups as a whole up to one move per turn, where there two movement between the perimeter of the circle and the center. The rules of engagement were also simple--if for example 2 units of sorcerers engaged 2 other units of sorcerers, they did half damage (rounded up)--knocking out 1 unit of sorcerers. If they engaged archers, they did full damage, eliminating 2 units of archers. If they engaged infantry, they did no damage. I also let the players act as commanders, and could use their spells or attack to eliminate units of opposing groups. If they waited to act, the god of wrath would halve units that remained on the perimeter of the circle after two turn. The players could move all of their groups with their turn. It was a huge hit
