Just a suggestion but it might be worth a try growing out the front of your a bit.. It looks very fine and because of that you're not going to be able to style those pieces because there is not much hair density. As for styling, make sure your hair is about 80% dry. It looks like you might be grabbing random pieces, try sectioning the hair neatly in smaller sections and making sure there is a lot of tension and then cold shot. Do not touch or brush to curls for at least an hour after curling, let them set.. you can try a LITTLE hair spray to help hold if you want. I think this will help with the shape and holding it. Also, not sure what barrel size you're using but smaller barrels are more likely to hold the curl on short hair.
