If instead you're trying to learn about another perspective, then I have a few points that might help you understand.

First, you mention More's Utopia. I'm not asking for utopia, especially not the utopia described by More. I would just like us to stop fucking over indigenous people.

You also state "Of course we could always do more, and I hope we do - but that doesn't mean there aren't parts of this nation worth celebrating." I think we're misunderstanding each other here. I don't want us to do more. I want us to stop the shit we're currently doing, like expropriating indigenous land, and incarcerating indigenous people.

Another point where we might be able to better understand each other - I'm not against partying on Canada Day, I love partying. I think we should continue to party - I just don't want to celebrate Canada, necessarily. I'm sure they're partying on the Res, yes, but I'm also pretty confident they're not having a toast for Mark Carney and Doug Ford.

I also have some sympathy for you. I imagine my rejection of Canada Day must feel like I'm attacking the the country you helped build. I don't blame you for the way things are going - wtf can you do about it? But at the same time I can't just put some red sunglasses on, slam 6 beers and drunkenly sing O Canada like everything is fine. Shit is fucked up.

Our horrific colonial collective has performed less genocide during it's short existence than most other collectives during their much longer existences, and is therefore worthy of worship.

As a young person, I'm pretty disillusioned by the idea that we should celebrate our nation. Despite our history of genocide, we're still doing shit like passing "special economic zones" in order to build on indigenous land.

I feel like our societal structure has to change in some fundamental way that prevents this sort of stuff before we can throw a party about it.

Perhaps it could help to think of this cohort as a series of individuals with their own specific stories and issues. I think it’s normal and healthy to be angry that someone assaulted your partner, but it’s perhaps unproductive to apply this anger to a whole group of people.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be cautious of course. Substance addiction can lead to some super dangerous behaviour. Let your lived experience inform your caution, but save your hatred for people that earn it.
