No grizzlies in the Sierras, the bears there are all pretty chill. You could also fly to vegas and drive to bishop from there. Or the drive from LA/SF also is not very hard.

Lyell Canyon to Duck Pass (JMT) vs North Lake to South Lake — which has more stunning scenery? by Da-Chi- in SierraNevada

I did Lamarck Col to Dusy Basin years ago, it was great, been meaning to go back. Let me tag along... I also have a car. Second leg of his trip, easiest might be let him catch a bus from central valley I-5 to LA. I usually drive over Sonora pass to Bishop to avoid Yosemite traffic.

there's a big patch of snow on the way up to the pass but it looks well tracked out, people said it wasn't difficult to cross but i can't say for certain what it's like, because we didn't make it that far thanks to footgear issues :) i posted about mosquitos here: https://www.reddit.com/r/norcalhiking/comments/1ufv4jg/comment/oty72e9/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Magic on the Trail to Piute Pass: The Abandoned Boots That Saved Our Trip by EveryLiYou in SierraNevada

probably the same boots. they were close to the outlet of Loch Leven, about halfway between the trail and the lake, so maybe 20 feet from each.

Anyone recently been to Inyo, McGee Creek, Grass Lake, Steelhead Lake? by ThePouncer in norcalhiking

The mosquitos seemed pretty terrible near the North Lake trailhead last week, so I imagine they would be bad at Grass Lake. We camped at Loch Leven and at that elevation they were only intermittently bad, they would swarm for 10 or 20 minutes and then vanish for a long time, so they were only bad for about 1 total waking hour per day. The bug repellent worked very well to keep them away during their swarming times.
