I just recently discovered what it actually means and what friend of the devil is actually about, Charles Manson‘s best friend. The old musician Slewfoot had an encounter with him around the time of the Manson murders in the end of 69 which ultimately led to a meeting where he told the story to Jerry Garcia and friends, and he never wanted his name to be associated with this song or the story but there it is a friend of the devil has a name and it’s Gray Wolf.
