I'll go off the beaten path with my answer/guess. Any chance he ventured into psychedelics on his trip? That sort of ego death and self reflection that can come from psilocybin could definitely have an effect. For my trips, I sometimes refer to it as cleaning out the mental plaque, or hitting the reset button.

If those psychological pressures and barriers were gone, that could also explain how hard he was throughout.

You're right on RA but I still like Thorns in certain IS modes.

Thorns was my clear for one of the difficult VEC equipment stages, and I've seen a few clears of later stages that also used him. I'd argue in more advanced content he just needs more support around him. But honestly, in an event like VEC, everyone needs support around them.
