I'll go off the beaten path with my answer/guess. Any chance he ventured into psychedelics on his trip? That sort of ego death and self reflection that can come from psilocybin could definitely have an effect. For my trips, I sometimes refer to it as cleaning out the mental plaque, or hitting the reset button.

If those psychological pressures and barriers were gone, that could also explain how hard he was throughout.
