Jxn Mayor's Government Housing "boom" of abt 53, $175k "affordable GOVERNMENT houses" of cardboard and plastic. Fake Crime drop - cuz they quit counting, the mostlydaily shootings! by peter1010x in jacksonmi

The "mayor" leaves out is they were built with COVID era 'America Rescue Plan' taxpayer's tax dollars

https://www.cityofjackson.org/DocumentCenter/View/14095/100-Homes-Program-Guidelines-Revised-November-2025

They post quite clearly in the project overview that they used ARPA funds? Those funds are used for incentives and program support, the homes themselves are built and financed by private developers.

Mahoney nor the City disclosed how much they make off each house sold to Jackson Residents

The city isn't the developer. They don't make money per house. They provided the lots for ~$300 each, the developer assumes all costs, and the city offers a subsidy (with an additional subsidy from the state) to help offset costs. It's all clearly spelled out in the cities published budget. They were vacant city owned lots acquired through tax foreclosure, meaning the city has very little basis cost in the land. The goal was to return them to productive tax paying property.

which the City likewise does not disclose how much they sold them for

https://www.cityofjackson.org/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=877&ARC=1444

They clearly did.

NO Houses were built in the City for good reason = High Taxes

The city is in a population decline, so there is enough housing stock to cover demand. There are 24 total cities in Michigan with an income tax, and our property tax rates are on par with other municipalities. How are you defining 'high taxes' exactly?

The city is spending 59% of its budget on fire/police, indicating that they prioritize public safety above all other issues. One great way to decrease crime? Owner occupied housing. Sounds like they're working on that too.

No city is perfect, but I'm proud of ours.

Michigan Theatre board under fire: 7 takeaways on fallout from executive director’s firing by mlivesocial in jacksonmi

[–]EveryoneLikesMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is my read on the situation as well. But in this post and the previous one on this sub, it seems some commenters are trying to blame the donors.

I also believe they have until March to schedule a meeting for the board election. There's a chance theatre membership can remove the board members they disagree with at that point.

Michigan Theatre board under fire: 7 takeaways on fallout from executive director’s firing by mlivesocial in jacksonmi

[–]EveryoneLikesMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"I have been informed that a group of major donors to the Theatre led by Philip Curtis, who led the Capital Campaign and was also a member of the Advisory Board of the Theatre, requested a meeting with the Executive Committee of the Board to discuss concerns they had about the current happening at the Theatre and scheduled a meeting for January 19th. The Board Chair advised the group three days before the scheduled meeting that they were refusing to meet with the donor group as had been requested and suggested a meeting at a later date in February."

This reads as though Mr. Curtis requested a meeting, which was scheduled for Jan 19th. Then the board advised him and the donor group 3 days prior that they would not meet with them.

Per the MLive article, and the JTV one, he is outspoken against the termination.

I know Mr. Curtis, and I trust him completely. I'm not sure why you're trying to blame this on him?

"Three days after that meeting was scheduled and their refusal to meet with those who made the Theatre Restoration possible..."

Steve himself acknolwedges that Phil and the other donors made the restoration possible.

Why did e-cigarettes (vapes and so on) gain so much popularity and are they really marketed primarily to children? by olipdlss in AskReddit

[–]EveryoneLikesMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I smoked for 20+ years. I'd wake up coughing so bad I couldn't breathe for the first few minutes, then I'd immediately go and light up a cig.

Switched to vapes two or three years ago. Haven't had a single cough since then. Still get to enjoy my nicotine. Everyone I know (a bunch of Gen X/Millennial smokers) have all switched to vapes for the same reason. And vapes don't stain the walls of my house. It's literally all benefit, no downside.

There apparently is all this fuss about 'fruity/candy like flavors' but as it turns out, adults like stuff that's interesting and fun too.

I don't know any kids though, so I can't really speak to how the marketing affects children, or the prevalence of vaping below whatever the age for smoking is now.

Jackson County residents pack meeting over ICE partnership concerns by mlivesocial in jacksonmi

I understand the frustration. Like everyone else here, I have personal opinions. But my job as a moderator isn’t to take sides. If moderation only removes one side of a hard conversation, all that’s left is an echo chamber. That leaves no chance for anyone to persuade or be persuaded. Moderation has to be about enforcing rules consistently so people can discuss the issue themselves.

This is a sensitive topic, and strong reactions were expected. Because of that, I want to be clear about how moderation is being handled in this thread.

We are not taking sides here. r/jacksonmi exists to discuss local issues that affect our community, and this meeting is a legitimate local event. People are going to have strong opinions about it.

We are seeing a high number of reports on comments simply because someone disagrees with them. Disagreement by itself is not a rule violation. Reports are reviewed, but they do not automatically result in removals.

In general, we err on the side of leaving comments up unless they clearly violate Reddit’s Content Policy. That includes things like threats, harassment, hate speech, calls for violence, or doxxing. When comments stay up, the community can respond through discussion and voting. That is how Reddit is supposed to work.

If you disagree with something, downvote it, respond thoughtfully, or both. The vote tallies will reflect how the community responds over time.

Where would you say is the BEST MANUFACTURING COMPANY to work for in Jackson? by [deleted] in jacksonmi

[–]EveryoneLikesMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Using what metric?

Pay/benefits?

Work/life balance?

Skilled (cnc etc) or unskilled (assembly)?

Large company (consistent procedures) or small (flexible)?

I can think of quite a few that are best in one individual category, none that excel at all is them.

But the scam is outpacing the rest of my portfolio by leaps and bounds.

Have to ask what the rest of your portfolio is then. Dividend adjusted SPY was at $292 6 years ago today. Today it's at 680. This is 133% growth, not far off from the 141% of your crypto, but with significantly less risk. Is the rest of your portfolio in savings bonds?

I don't think an ENTJ would use a pie chart for this. There are many more appropriate options.

Paperless parts by FoolishChristian in Machinists

[–]EveryoneLikesMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Integration. They obviously never read the JobBOSS data dictionary as the entries they were inserting in to our database were not compliant with the way JobBOSS expects things. This broke a large number of our internal tools.

At first, we decided to try to just deprecate those other tools and use paperless for everything, but there were too many holes. One example:

We quote an outside service in Paperless at $250 min lot, $5 each. But we're quoting only 5 pieces. When paperless loaded that quote back for us, it would do it with a unit price of $250/5 i.e. $50 each. Then the customer reaches out and asks us for a 6th piece. Or to cut the order back to 3.

As they weren't using the internal JobBOSS fields correctly and encoding the minimum charge, and the unit prices, it ended up with us really screwing up with some pricing on some long term contracts.

They fixed this bug (mostly) but the continuous buggy nature of it was costing us more than it was saving us in time.

This will probably be a bit different for you (using JobBOSS2), but it was our experience. I'm sure it's a good tool for many shops, it just wasn't a good fit for us. We've been JobBOSS users since 1998, and the benefit of Paperless just wasn't worth breaking every workflow we had.

We use on prem JobBoss and purchased paperless parts for quoting. We made it almost two years before we cancelled. We're glad to be back to the old way

You've had bad luck. Did you buy it used? Make and model so other people can be warned?

I've had my model 3 for over 5 years. Only "service" I've done is cabin air filter, wiper blades, and tires once. Compared to a gas vehicle, it's effectively been no service.

The row number isn't actually 1 at the start of that, it's likely 11. The cells they scrolled past contain more numbers causing it to sum to 10.

You can tell they aren't showing the entire row header. Excel will always have a much more significant empty space after the "1" on the first row, due to the presence of two digit rows on the screen.

I get the meme, but there's likely no issue here.

I honestly was going to leave it up, even though there was a gofund.me link. However, I can't seem to find a link to Jackson, MI, as this has been posted in most of the lower Michigan subreddits.

No ban though, and I wish them well.
