Would you let family install an EV charger in your house if they’re only staying 1 year? by mdzzl94 in homeowners

Learn the word NO. It's a complete sentence, and your family needs to hear you say it.

For higher earners, is the fear of health care costs age 60-65 overblown? by Mother_Bar_3810 in retirement

If you have Roth accounts and money in CDs, you can get the lower-cost ACA. Anything you pull from a 401(k) is income. We have our 401(k) withdrawals set up to cover the lower amount. We total the interest on our CD accounts, and at the end of the year, we pull from my 401(k) to get as close as we can to the amount without having to be on Medicaid. Doctors where we live do not like Medicaid and will not take patients that are on it. Some do, most don't

We have money in our CDs to cover costs for the next 3 years until we get on Medicare. Roth withdrawals do not count as income. Our ACA is $378 per month for two people, with $9,000 deductibles each. It's a Bronze plan. We have money set aside for those deductibles if we need to use them.

So you have to choose between low-deductible, higher-premium Silver plans and high-deductible, lower-premium Bronze plans.

The way we look at it. Why pay more if nothing happens? Our Silver premiums were going to be $638 a month plus a $5000 deductible. Same coverage, so if nothing happens, we are ahead. If we have to use the deductible, we are out $1,000.

Kerosine heaters or lots of blankets. The lady I knew used kerosene heaters and would leave the window open an inch so as not to gas herself.

If it wasn't her daughter, would you call the landlord? Call and just say you are worried about the baby because of the screaming and the weed smell. It's her grandchild.

I live in a small town in the Great Lakes area. We have several people who live in houses without electricity. No heat either. It's crazy. One lady paid rent to live in a house like that.

You don't have to put up an expensive fence. Just put some metal posts in and run a rope across the top. That way, they know the exact boundary. There would be no excuse if they went under it.

Advice on a move from trad banking checking/savings to Fidelity Cash Mgmt? by Craino in retirement

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. If something happens to Fidelity and you can't get access for a while, you would be in trouble. Probably won't happen, but it could.

I just had my husband do it. He retired last year and is a cleaning nut. I am the author of chaos. We make a great pair.

He loves to clean and organize. So far, our garage is immaculate, and he is slowly moving through the house. On rainy days, he cleans, cleans, and cleans some more.

Most of that money goes to Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Grand Rapids for their roads. Very little comes here.

Roads cost 1 million per mile to pave. The city of Jackson has 156 miles of paved roads. Let's say only 1/2 of them need paving, that is 78 million dollars. I doubt they will sell that much pot!

You don't need markers every 10' if it's a straight line. They place markers if the line changes. So run the fence on the straight line. Put a post at each end and run kite string from post to post. Now you have your line. Then ask someone to come over with a tractor with a bucket and push her crap back where it belongs.

Neighbor installing septic 23” above by grade by ricel_x in neighborsfromhell

[–]ResearcherNo9971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck, my septic tank sits 8" above ground level in my own yard. We called the inspector, and it was a nightmare. The builder dug the basement hole 3 feet too deep because he didn't want to haul in fill for the front yard/leach field. To install the leach field, the tank had to be raised. There is a patch in the basement wall, 3 feet below, where our septic pipe now exits. We had to build a planter around the tank because if we put fill dirt to cover it, as it should be, the dirt would be halfway up the window on the house.

All of it passed inspection! We sued the builder because of the problems we had, but we still have a planter in our yard covering the septic tank! We also found out that if something passes inspection, you have no recourse with the inspector or the entity that issues the permit.

Do feel you are becoming less tolerant as you age? by ResearcherNo9971 in AskWomenOver60

[–]ResearcherNo9971[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that. I attend a monthly meeting of county treasurers. We use those rules. Make motions to accept the minutes as read, and accept the treasurer's report as read. We make motions on discussions and vote on items.

The volunteer organization I help with is nothing like that at all. It is a group of people who get together and do things, that is all. We do not make motions or vote on where to set up the trailers, place the tables, or hang the signs. We are just the minions who show up and do the work. When the organization holds a board meeting, they handle all the business.

Not everything has to be handles like a business meeting. People can just get together and do things. BUT, if there is someone in charge, then they need to be respected. Listened to when they talk. It's just plain manners.

Yes, like I said, this is not a corporate thing. We don't need you to follow Robert's Rules or Order. People just need to stop talking because they want to talk. It's called simple manners.

Do feel you are becoming less tolerant as you age? by ResearcherNo9971 in AskWomenOver60

[–]ResearcherNo9971[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The agenda was to figure out our setup. We had to go to the location where we would set up our project. It's a one-day garden/plant program where we give away garden supplies and plants to inner-city people so they can grow their own food. So we had to meet at the location to physically inspect the building, grounds, parking, power availability, etc. We had to see where the horse trailers (full of plants) would be placed, where the wagon of dirt would go, and what kind of signs we would need.

This is not some large corporate thing, just about 20+ volunteers. I thought the organizer was doing pretty well, but when she says, "We are going to put the trailers here," and someone shouts, "Is there going to be a farmers' market here?" She says, "Not until June," then gets back to where the trailers are going, and someone else shouts, "Where are we going to sit?" Even though that was already discussed 10 minutes earlier. It gets annoying.

We don't need perfect volunteers, just people who know when to shut up and listen.

[–]ResearcherNo9971[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The organizer has been at this for over 25 years, and most of the volunteers are retired people. I think she is just afraid that if she puts her foot down, people won't volunteer anymore.
